Missouri vs Abilene Christian Game Preview

Why Abilene Christian Will Win

Missouri is struggling.

It managed just 222 yards of total offense in an ugly 40-12 loss to Kansas State, the passing game isn’t clicking – even with an easy win over Louisiana Tech – and there are way, way too many turnovers with six in the two games.

Abilene Christian has been fantastic in the first two games. It’s been owning the clock, dominating on third downs, and it hasn’t allowed a thing late in games.

The Wildcats haven’t given up a second half point so far and just six points after the first quarter.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Missouri Will Win

The Tigers can fix this fast.

The running game ran at will over Louisiana Tech, the defense didn’t allow a thing on the ground – granted, the Bulldogs didn’t try running a whole bunch – and the passing attack should eventually click.

Everyone around Mizzou is impatient for this to all start working already under head coach Eliah Drinkwitz, but the talent is still coming into place, QB Brady Cook has to settle into the job, and that’s what this game is for.

The lines are in place to take over right away, and the defense should be able to attack the Wildcat backfield.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Sometimes a team needs a cathartic blowout win. Beating up on Abilene Christian won’t make the performance against Kansas State go away, but it’ll be a reset moment before having to go to Auburn.

It won’t always be smooth, but the running game will take over, the defense will get over giving up a few early scores, and Mizzou will start to look the part early in the second half.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Six reasons that Texas lost to Abilene Christian in the NCAA Tournament

Six reasons that the Texas Longhorns were upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Abilene Christian.

Abilene Christian shockingly upset Texas on Saturday night in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The heavily favored Longhorns were seemingly a lock to win this matchup after they secured their first Big 12 tournament championship.

Instead, they concluded a promising season without an NCAA Tournament win. The Longhorns have not made it past the first round in the Shaka Smart era.

Defense is Abilene Christian’s strength and was the primary subject that had been talked about the most in preparation for the Wildcats. However, Texas had more noteworthy scorers and a few future NBA Draft picks on their roster.

What went wrong?

Unfortunately, it’s not a simple one word answer. There were several things that Texas seemingly struggled with throughout the contest. The Longhorns held the lead for over 60% of the game and should have pulled this one out, but they couldn’t get out of their own way.

Take a look at six of the primary reasons that Texas suffered a devastating loss to Abilene Christian.

Turns out Abilene Christian coach Joe Golding is a pretty decent dancer

Shake a leg.

Earlier today we brought you the exhilarating exploits of Paul Hiepler, a deep reserve who spent Abilene Christian’s upset victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament shouting and making the greatest faces you’ve ever seen. In the seconds after the 14-seed Wildcats vanquished the No. 3 Texas Longhorns, he mercilessly flipped the upside-down horns.

He’s not the only character on this team worth learning about, though. Head coach Joe Golding took over the program a decade ago as it was set to return to the Division I level, saw it through some very lean years (he was 71-105 through six seasons before finally finishing .500 in his seventh season), and it seems, also learned some dance moves along the way.

(Our guy Hiepler, No. 33, is feeling this, too!)

It’s not clear when this video was taken. I don’t believe the dance actually occurred last night, since Abilene Christian wore purple jerseys in its win over Texas. But it’s worth sharing. (Also, let’s remember the time Joe Golding coached with a hole in his pants. This guy is unencumbered by society’s expectations. He’ll dance with abandon. He’ll wear split trousers. He’ll win tournament games.)

This all must be incredibly gratifying for Golding, who played at Abilene Christian in the mid 1990s, then worked his way up the coaching ladder with high school and JUCO stints.

Also, can I just point out that the player pictured with Golding in the photo at the top of this story is named Joe Pleasant. He had a lovely 11 points, tied for a team high, including these two free throws:

Here’s how the kids at his school experienced those moments.

This is fun.

Texas Basketball: Longhorns lose in first round of NCAA Tournament

The Texas Longhorns lost their round one matchup against Abilene Christian in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

The Texas Longhorns lost their third NCAA Tournament game in the first round in the Shaka Smart era. The Longhorns came in heavily favored, but couldn’t get out of their own way as they lost to Abilene Christian 53-52.

Texas led at the half, but the biggest thing that Abilene Christian had been able to do this season was deadly to the Horns defeat: turnovers. The Wildcats lead the nation in turnovers forced, and Texas turned it over 23 times.

The Longhorns kept it close all half long, but were down two points with just over 16 seconds to go — Matt Coleman III made a three which gave Texas the lead.

After what seemed was the game-winning shot, Coleman would also make the game-deciding mistake. On a rebound attempt, Coleman fouled Joe Pleasant with 1.2 seconds to go. Pleasant came in with a 58.8 free throw percentage, but was having the game of his life.

After making both free throws, Brock Cunningham attempted the in-bound pass, which would be intercepted at mid-court. The game shockingly ended there.

While the Wildcats move on to round two to take on the UCLA Bruins, the Texas Longhorns will head back to Austin. They won their first Big 12 championship, but once again fell short in the first round.

Scoring Leaders:

Andrew Jones: 13 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists

Joe Pleasant: 11 points, 7 rebounds

Kai Jones: 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists

LOOK: MSU fans, media members react to UCLA routing BYU, Texas upset

If you are still hurting from MSU’s tough loss to UCLA on Thursday night, then what happened late on Saturday only made things worse.

[mm-video type=video id=01f19bmjjh0zc7dxkm playlist_id=01eqbz825g32p3akwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f19bmjjh0zc7dxkm/01f19bmjjh0zc7dxkm-b1338b17297037975cd273fa7c5e9aa0.jpg]

Oh, what could have been…

If you are still hurting from Michigan State’s tough loss to UCLA on Thursday night, then what happened late on Saturday only made things worse. The Spartans blew a 14-point lead against UCLA in their First Four matchup, and that loss now seems even more painful after the Bruins cruised past No. 6 seed BYU and No. 14 seed Abilene Christian upset No. 3 Texas in the first round on Saturday. Now, UCLA will play Abilene Christian on Monday as relatively sizable favorites to make the Sweet 16.

Of course, we don’t truly know if the Spartans would have also beaten BYU or if they also wouldn’t be upset by Abilene Christian — but you can’t deny the road was somewhat paved for Michigan State to once again reach the Sweet 16.

As you could expect, Michigan State fans and local media members that covered the team had some thoughts on the UCLA-BYU and Texas-Abilene Christian results…take a look below:

Has there ever been a better one-man bench mob than this dude for our latest Cinderella, Abilene Christian? No.

Let us all bring the energy of Paul Hiepler to everything we do.

Abilene Christian — which is a real school, I fact checked it, this is a very professional blog — beat Texas Saturday night in the NCAA Tournament, 53-52.

So if you’re keeping score at home, our official Cinderellas are: Two 13 seeds, North Texas and Ohio, 14th-seeded Abilene Christian and 15th-seeded Oral Roberts.

Not a bad group. Thanks, March.

I’m not here to give you any quick-fire analysis of this one. It’s obvious from the score that the Wildcats probably worked to control the tempo; a slower pace favors the less-skilled team. Texas turned the ball over 23 times. Already we have the ingredients for a tournament upset.

But, ALSO, Abilene Christian had this guy:

The horns down! He did the horns down!

Look, we’re accustomed to the fact that most Cinderella teams don’t last. We love them briefly and they leave us and that’s what this is.

But can we please keep Paul Hiepler around a bit longer? Literally just place him in the arena and film his reaction to whatever is going on. Put it on TruTV. You don’t have any other programming scheduled for that channel, TV execs.

Texas Basketball: NCAA Tournament first half recap of Abilene Christian

The first half recap of the Texas Longhorns round one matchup vs. Abilene Christian in the NCAA Tournament.

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns started their NCAA Tournament against the No. 14 Abilene Christian Wildcats in round one. The Longhorns came in as an 8.5 favorite, but the Wildcats have made things tough for Texas through the first half as the Longhorns lead by a score of 28-23.

It was expected to be a defensive battle, but the Longhorns haven’t been able to get any consistent shots down. The exception has been Andrew Jones, who’s shooting 50% from the field and 66.7% from three-point range.

The biggest difference in this game is the Wildcats continuing to shoot the three but have not been able to find any comfortability from beyond the arch. The team is shooting 25% from long-range so far for the game.

This matchup looks like it is going to be a close finish, but Texas needs to be able to get someone besides Jones who can make shots deep. Courtney Ramey is shooting 25% and Matt Coleman III already has two personal fouls.

Leading Scorers at the Half:

Joe Pleasant: 7 points, 6 rebounds

Kai Jones: 7 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists

Andrew Jones: 6 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists
