LOOK: Texas Basketball 2022-23 Season Review In Pictures

Check out the best photos from the 2022-23 Texas men’s basketball season. Including a run to the Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament.

The 2023 Texas men’s basketball team exceeded all expectations under then-interim head coach Rodney Terry. His fiery compassion and the team’s resilience propelled them to an Elite 8 season. Although their run in the NCAA tournament ended earlier than they would have liked, the Longhorns proved that under coach Terry they will be able to compete with anyone in the country for many years to come. In late March, Terry received a 5-year contract to become head coach of the Longhorns

Texas began the year at No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches poll and finished the season as Big 12 Conference tournament champions. The team finished 26-8 overall and 12-6 in Big 12 play, one game behind Kansas. After an impressive postseason run, the Longhorn’s final ranking of No. 7 was their highest ranking at the end of a season since the 2007-08 campaign.

The Longhorns had several notable wins throughout the year, including a victory over the then-ranked No. 2 team in the country, the Gonzaga Bulldogs. They also had impressive wins against other top-25 teams, including Baylor and Kansas, whom they defeated in the Big 12 tournament championship game.

In the NCAA tournament, Texas defeated Colgate, Penn State, and Xavier, making it all the way to the Elite 8 before being knocked out by the Miami Hurricanes in a hard-fought game.

The 2022-23 Texas men’s basketball team faced significant adversity early in the season when head coach Chris Beard was fired following misconduct allegations. Terry, who previously served as an assistant coach at Texas dating back to the Rick Barnes era, took on the role of interim head coach on January 5th and never looked back.

Report: Oral Roberts G Max Abmas to visit Texas on Wednesday

One of the top rated players in the transfer portal is visiting Rodney Terry and Texas.

One of the top rated players in the transfer portal is visiting Rodney Terry and Texas this week. Jeff Goodman reports Oral Roberts transfer Max Abmas is going to check out the Texas basketball program.

Abmas is a high-impact scorer. He’s totaled over 2,500 career points, averaging over 20 points per game in his last three seasons at Oral Roberts. He has four years of college basketball experience, including spearheading a Sweet 16 run in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Texas has been quiet on the transfer portal front so far this offseason. The Longhorns have missed a few key targets and watched Arterio Morris and Rowan Brumbaugh head out the door.

Abmas would be a huge piece of the puzzle for Texas basketball in 2023. The Longhorns replace guards Marcus Carr, Sir’Jabari Rice and await Tyrese Hunter’s NBA Draft status.

Jerome Tang and Kansas State are a factor, but Texas looks to make a strong impression on Abmas’ visit.

Texas G Rowan Brumbaugh to enter transfer portal

Brumbaugh is the first Longhorn to hit the portal this offseason.

Texas freshman guard Rowan Brumbaugh announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal this week. He becomes the first Longhorn to hit the portal this offseason.

Brumbaugh is a former four-star prospect from the class of 2022. He spent his freshman season redshirting as Texas had a strong group of experienced guards ahead of him.

247Sports Composite listed Brumbaugh as the No. 89 player in the 2022 cycle. He was a late signing for Chris Beard and the Longhorns in Dec. of 2021 after flipping from Northwestern.

Brumbaugh entering the portal leaves Texas with Arterio Morris as the lone scholarship guard on the roster. Starting guard Tyrese Hunter is questionable to return as he tests NBA Draft waters. Rodney Terry will have to utilize the transfer portal and high school ranks to build his backcourt for next season.

Texas basketball ranked No. 7 in way-too-early 2024 top 25

Rodney Terry has raised the expectations for Texas basketball.

Texas basketball had one of the best seasons in program history in 2023. The Longhorns finished the year at 29-9, making an NCAA Tournament run all the way to the Elite Eight.

Rodney Terry earned the full-time job as head coach after knocking it out of the park in the interim role.

The Longhorns hope to build on the momentum built this past season moving forward.

Texas ranks No. 7 in 247Sports’ way-too-early top 25 rankings for the 2023-2024 season.

If Disu hadn’t gotten hurt, Texas likely would have reached the Final Four and would have been a tough out, even with the way UConn played. Now he has a decision to make. If he comes back and carries over his momentum from the postseason, Texas will be awfully tough to beat. Tyrese Hunter is testing the NBA Draft waters but seems likely to return, and Texas seems likely to find a transfer point guard to help relieve some of the ball-handling burden. Arterio Morris and Dillon Mitchell are sophomore jump candidates, Brock Cunningham comes up with big plays in key moments and five-star forward Ron Holland looks like a hand-in-glove fit.

While we are an entire offseason packed with NBA decisions and transfer portal moves away from the first game of the 2023 campaign, Texas appears to be in good shape to compete for a title again.

Texas G Tyrese Hunter to test NBA waters in upcoming draft

Tyrese Hunter is set to test NBA waters.

Texas basketball’s Tyrese Hunter has declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. The second-year guard plans to maintain his college eligibility during the draft process.

Hunter started all 38 games for the Longhorns this season, averaging 10.3 points and 2.5 assists per game. He played a significant role in Texas’ Big 12 Tournament title and March Madness run to the Elite Eight.

While a return to college is still on the table for Hunter, Texas may be losing a majority of its excellent backcourt going into next season. A tall task for Rodney Terry to face as he navigates his first offseason as head coach.

Terry can use the transfer portal and high school recruiting ranks to build his roster for next season.

The deadline for college basketball players to withdraw from the NBA Draft and return to school is on June 12.

Texas Basketball: Sir’Jabari Rice sparking Longhorns’ success

Sir’Jabari Rice is the type of player Texas needs to make a run in March.

Texas basketball brought in Sir’Jabari Rice via the transfer portal over the offseason from New Mexico State.

The addition of Rice was overshadowed a bit by Texas bringing in Tyreese Hunter from Iowa State and five-star guard Arterio Morris. Expectations for Texas’ guard play this season has exceptionally high, but not because of Rice.

Fast forward to the middle of the season and Rice is one of the most impactful players on the roster.

Rice is playing himself into contention for Big 12 sixth man of the year with his play thus far. He is the only Big 12 bench player to record back-to-back 20-point games this season.

Rice provides a spark for the Longhorns every time he touches the court. His beautiful pump fake gets both opposing defenders and Texas fans off their feet.

In a game where Marcus Carr did not have much success scoring the ball, Rice picked up the slack, scoring 21 points to take down No. 11 Baylor. Rice is poised for the big moment and continues to come up clutch late in games for Texas.

Rice is going to play a significant role for Texas as they compete for a Big 12 title and a national championship.
