Jase Febres to Have Knee Surgery, Out For the Season

Shaka Smart said on Monday afternoon that Jase Febres will be having surgery on his knee. Febres is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Head Coach Shaka Smart told reporters on Monday afternoon that junior guard Jase Febres will be having surgery on his knee this week. Due to the procedure, Febres is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Suffering the injury against the Feb 8th matchup against Texas Tech, Febres has missed six consecutive games. While healthy, Febres was averaging 9.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game in 23 games.

Since the injury, the Longhorns are 4-2, currently on a four-game winning streak. Other guards Andrew Jones, Matt Coleman, and Courtney Ramey have stepped up in his absence, picking up the scoring.

Now making an NCAA Tournament push with their guard who was averaging 30.5 minutes per game, Texas will have a ‘next man up’ mentality. Also dealing with other injuries, Shaka Smart’s squad is growing thin.

Finishing up the regular season this week on the road to Oklahoma and at home to Oklahoma State, the Longhorns are just a couple wins away from clinching a berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Texas Basketball: Jericho Sims, Kai Jones and Jase Febres to miss ISU game

The Texas Longhorns will be without Jericho Sims, Jase Febres and Kai Jones against the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday.

Life for the Texas men’s basketball team has been rough going through the thick of their conference schedule. Life didn’t get any better as they prepare for their next matchup with the Iowa State Cyclones. The Longhorns will be looking for the season series sweep on Saturday, one of their lone bright spots on this season filled with disappointments.

The Longhorns will be without Kai Jones and Jase Febres for the Cyclones game and now it looks like Jericho Sims will be out for an undetermined amount of time. The latest news came as a bit of shock as he is dealing with a back injury that could possibly keep him sidelines for the rest of the season. That was a huge blow to the Longhorns basketball team that has had their own issues on the court.

Sims currently sits 8th among Big 12 rebounders with 8.2/game. The Longhorns will now need to find production with no other Texas player in the top 20 rebounders in the conference. This likely will mean more playing time for Royce Hamm Jr who is only averaging 9.4 minutes per game. He also averages 2.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. The Longhorns could also lean on more Kamaka Hepa to play some more minutes for Texas.

The Cyclones are dealing with injury issues of their own with Tyrese Haliburton done for the year with a fractured wrist. He was averaging 15.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. The Longhorns travel to Ames, Iowa on Saturday for the final regular season matchup between these two schools.

Texas gets back on the right track, beats TCU on the road

Texas finally picked up a victory Wednesday night, going on the road to defeat TCU. A big win for UT, they are back on the right track.

The Longhorns finally picked up a victory Wednesday night, going on the road to defeat TCU 62-61. Jase Febres led the way in scoring for Texas, having 15 points on 5-7 shooting. All seven shots were from behind the three-point line, shooting 71.4%.

Losers of three straight games, it had been a rough stretch for the Longhorns. Losing to ranked teams Baylor, Kansas, and LSU, a win against the Horned Frogs was crucial if Shaka Smart and the team wanted any chance of making the NCAA Tournament.

Jericho Sims was huge for Texas on the glass, recording 13 rebounds. Nine of them were on the defensive end, the most on either team. He also led the game in offensive rebounds, securing four. Overall, the Longhorns outrebounded TCU by one, 29-28.

Texas was deadly from deep, shooting 50% from behind the arc. Making 11 threes on 22 shots, it is the most they have made since the Jan. 15 matchup against Oklahoma State. It has been a key for the Longhorns all season, as making their three-pointers has led to wins.

For the Horned Frogs, three players were in double figures, with Kevin Samuel and RJ Nembhard leading the way with 17 points. Nembhard also had five rebounds and six assists, leading TCU in both stats.

Up next for Texas is a home game against Iowa State on Saturday. After that, it will be another tough stretch, going on the road to Kansas and then hosting Texas Tech and Baylor. Currently not projected to make the NCAA Tournament, another important set of games is coming up for the Longhorns.

Texas Longhorns Basketball: Second Half Surge Buries High Point

Second half surge, led by Jase Febres buries High Point against the Texas Longhorns in Austin.

The Texas Longhorns changed up their starting five for their matchup against High Point with Andrew Jones and Kamaka Hepa. Matt Coleman III started off the scoring with a runner for three before the shot clock expired. The Longhorns started off the game with a 6-0 run before a Jericho Sims turnover led to the Panthers first basket on a breakaway bucket.

Early in the first half the Longhorns built their lead to 19-6, the Panthers had a hard time scoring with 2-14 shooting.  They would get within three points of Texas 21-18 with eight minutes left in the first half. The 10-2 run by High Point started when Shaka Smart went deep into his bench to make the game a little too close for comfort.

The free shooting was the big story in the first half, while the Longhorns struggled from the charity stripe, the Panthers were able to keep the game close with excellent free throw shooing during the first half. Texas would answer back with a 10-2 run in the final four minutes to get the lead for the Longhorns 41-29 at the break.

The Longhorns built their lead to 20 midway through the second half 57-37 shooting 60% from the field after coming out of the locker room. Jase Febres seemed to find his touch from behind the arc after barely getting minutes in the first half. Febres hit four of his first five three pointers, including back to back to build the lead to 64-39.

As the second half wore on, the Panthers just couldn’t match with Texas scoring increasing their lead to 35 points 77-42 with under seven minutes left in the game. The Panthers without their leading scorer Curtis Holland III, High Point and Tubby Smith didn’t have much hope of pulling off the upset in Austin. The Longhorns improved their home record to 7-0 and collected their 10th win on the year 89-58. Next up for Smart and the Longhorns are the Baylor Bears.

Texas Longhorns and Shaka Smart Look To Get Back On Track

The Texas Longhorns basketball team is looking to get back on track after an abysmal performance against Providence.

Following the second Texas Longhorns defeat on the season at the hands of Providence, Shaka Smart looks to get his team back on track against High Point. Texas heads into their final tune up game before taking on the seventh-ranked Baylor Bears on January 4th. The Longhorns had won five-straight prior to last Saturday’s match up.

For this game, Jase Febres needs to get back to be a focal point of the offense. He finished with six points on two of seven shooting. He can be a streaky shooter from deep and against the Friars, Febres hit just one of six shots. His 17% from behind the arc was his lowest of the season for Texas. As a whole, 31.7% shooting won’t get the job done, it was their lowest on the season.

The other issue they had was allowing the Friars to take advantage of turnovers. If the Texas men’s basketball team wants to join the women in terms of taking down a top team, then they need to limit their turnovers because a team like Baylor will take advantage of that.

High Point Panthers are just 3-9 on the season and carrying a winless record on the road when they travel to Austin on Monday. The Panthers are led by sophomore guard Curtis Holland III who is shooting 42.6% from the field and 40% from three. His 14.5 points per game leads the team.

Longhorns top point man is Matt Coleman III with his 12.8 ppg and shooting 46.3% from the field. Texas is seeking their 10th win of the year and looking to remain unbeaten at the Frank Irwin Center.

Texas Longhorn Men’s Basketball Team Improves to 9-1

The Texas Longhorns took care of business at the Frank Erwin Center with a second half surge against Central Michigan.

It was Star Wars Day at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas as the Longhorns (8-1) hosted the Central Michigan Chippewas (7-3). Early on for the Longhorns it didn’t appear that things would be going their way as they went into the half down 42-36.

In this matchup the Longhorns were led by Courtney Ramey who had his best three ball working on the season, heading into the game he was shooting 23% from behind the line. He stepped up his game shooting 60% on five shots. The Longhorns relied heavily on their three point shooting to come from behind early in the second half. Ramey provided 20 points in 31 minutes.

The man of the day was definitely Jase Febres, who was on fire from three. He attempted 10 shots with seven of them finding the bottom of the net. On the season Febres was shooting 32.9% from three and 34.8% in his collegiate career but was able to find the stroke in this game. The Longhorns lived by the three and fortunately enough they didn’t die by it.

Jase not only made his mark with pinpoint shooting but he was getting involved on the glass with three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Matt Coleman III was the glass cleaner in this game with seven boards to lead all the starters. Royce Hamm Jr  came off the bench to grab a game high 12 boards and one block in 16 minutes. The Longhorns ran away with it in the second half outscoring Central Michigan, 51-34 to secure their ninth win overall and keeping their record perfect at home.

Texas was able to hold the nation’s top scoring offense to just 76 points which is 12.7 points less than their per game average. Next up for the Longhorns will be a matchup in Providence next Saturday.
