Himmelsbach: No Yam Madar or Juhann Begarin for the Las Vegas Summer League Boston Celtics

However, it appears to be less related to the state of the Celtics’ backcourt than “commitments to their European clubs” for the 2023-24 season in their respective leagues.

Fans of the Boston Celtics who make the trek to the Las Vegas Summer League this year are unlikely to see either of the Celtics’ two guards currently stashed in Europe. Per the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, “neither Juhann Begarin nor Yam Madar are expected to play for the Celtics’ summer league team this year.”

However, that decision appears less related to the state of the Celtics’ backcourt (which may shift considerably depending on how other elements of Boston’s offseason take shape) than commitments to their European clubs for the 2023-24 season.

For Madar, that likely means a larger role with Belgrade’s Partizan NIS. For Begarin, that means an entirely new club as he leaves Paris Basket for Nanterre 92 of the French LNB Pro A League.

Stashed Celtics guard Juhann Begarin gets 14 points, 5 boards, 3 steals in EuroCup opener

Begarin’s solid start abroad to his 2022-23 season continues.

Stashed Boston Celtics combo guard Juhann Begarin continues to shine in play for Paris Basket as that team played its first contest in EuroCup play against the former ball club of fellow stashed Celtics guard Yam Madar, with the St. Abymes, Guadeloupe native having a solid if inefficient game in Paris Basket’s 100-86 loss.

The Frenchman put up 15 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals in just over 30 and a half minutes of floor time. Begarin fouled just once while drawing 4 in return, and had just one turnover as well. But for all of that, he also shot just 5-of-15 overall. He did manage to connect on 3 of his 8 3-point attempts and a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, however.

To see what the former No. 45 overall pick of the 2021 NBA draft has been playing like to start the season abroad, take a look at the highlight clip put together by the folks at the Bllen YouTube channel.

Stashed Boston Celtics guard Juhann Begarin gets 28 points, 5 boards in season debut vs. AS Monaco

The Celtics’ former No. 45 pick of the 2021 draft had himself an especially efficient night from the field.

Stashed Boston Celtics guard prospect Juhann Begarin had quite the season debut after missing his team’s first four games due to a shoulder injury.

In a 95-91 loss to AS Monaco, the Les Abymes, Guadeloupe native led Paris Basketball with 28 points, 5 rebounds, an assist and 3 steals in 32 minutes of play. He committed three fouls and one turnover in the French LNB Pro A game.

The Celtics’ No. 45 pick of the 2021 draft had an especially efficient night from the field. Begarin shot 10-of-16 from the field, 8-of-12 from 2-point range, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the loss.

“We all witnessed it (Sunday), Juhann Begarin is an NBA player. He can make an impact in Boston,” said Paris Basketball head coach Will Weaver via Eurohoops’ Johnny Askounis. “We missed him a lot to start the season.”

Stashed Celtics wing Juhann Begarin to stay in France, play in LNB Pro-A to hone skills in 2022-23 season

The Celtics’ 2021 NBA draft pick will continue working on his game abroad next season, per reports.

While it was never really much in doubt, it is now reportedly decided that stashed Boston Celtics wing Juhann Begarin plans to return to France to play for Paris Basket in that country’s LNB Pro-A league and the Euroleague according to new reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

Per the Globe reporter, the Les Abymes, Guadeloupe native will spend next season overseas working on his game despite a strong showing in this year’s NBA 2K23 Las Vegas Summer League play. There, Begarin put up a very solid 18.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.8 steals per game with the Celtics’ summer league squad, turning some heads with the unexpectedly strong performance.

The former No. 45 pick of the Celtics in the 2021 NBA draft, Begarin looks the part of an athletic combo guard with enough size to play up to the small forward position.

Still quite raw in terms of skill, his summer league performance hints that the French wing is getting closer to being ready to make the leap to the NBA, even if it is not quite his time just yet.

Juhann Begarin Boston Celtics Las Vegas Summer League highlights vs. Brooklyn Nets (7/16)

The French wing looks like a future NBA player after his Las Vegas Summer League play.

While only Boston Celtics two way big man Mfiondu Kabengele has earned himself a roster spot with the Celtics since JD Davison inked a two way deal earlier in the week so far, there have been a number of impressive players taking the floor for the Sin City Celtics in Las Vegas Summer League action.

One of them has been French combo guard Juhann Begarin, who had himself another good game in Boston’s 102-95 loss to the Brooklyn Nets in the Summer Celtics’ last game of the annual Nevada exhibition series. The stashed Celtics wing put up a team-high 25 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and as many steals in 35 minutes of floor time on Saturday afternoon.

Shooting a very good 9-of-17 from the floor, a sizzling 3-of-6 from deep, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe while fouling 4 times and turning the ball over 3 times, the Frenchman had himself one of his better games of the season.

If you missed the game or just want to see Begarin in action one more time, check out the clip embedded above courtesy of YouTuber Bllen.

Juhann Begarin Boston Celtics Las Vegas Summer League highlights vs. Golden State Warriors (7/12)

Real estate on Begarin island is going up after this performance.

The real estate on Juhann Begarin island had gotten pretty affordable of late but after the French guard’s play in the Boston Celtics’ 103-92 win over the Golden State Warriors in their third contest of Las Vegas Summer League, we expect it to have risen noticeably.

The stashed Celtics wing came alive in the exhibition contest against the Las Vegas version of the team that ripped the 2022 title out of their hands just weeks earlier, Begarin helping exact a modicum of revenge with his 21 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks in 33 minutes of play. He turned the ball over quite a bit at 5 total times, but only fouled 2 times to help make up for the poor ball control.

The Frenchman hit 7-of-19 overall, 2-of-4 from 3, and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line for his best showing yet in the States.

Check out the clip embedded above to see the best of Begarin’s play from Tuesday thanks to YouTuber Tomasz Kordylewski.

FULL 2022 Boston Celtics Las Vegas Summer League roster announced

On Tuesday, the Celtics announced their full Las Vegas Summer League roster.

As has been the annual tradition (save of course for the height of the pandemic), the Boston Celtics are assembling a Las Vegas Summer League squad to get in some run at the 2022 Sin City exhibition series, and on Tuesday morning, the team announced their full roster for the Nevada friendlies we all love to put far too much stock into.

There were plenty of familiar faces assigned to it we expected to be on the summer league team, a stashed floor general making the trip back stateside for another go at making a roster spot in the NBA, and a few new names to learn more about in the coming days and weeks.

Let’s see who will be this year’s Vegas Summer Celtics.

Boston assistant GM Austin Ainge reveals partial roster for Celtics’ 2022 Las Vegas Summer League squad

We now know at least some of the players headed to Sin City this July.

The Boston Celtics will field a team at the 2022 NBA Las Vegas Summer League, and the first of their four contests in the exhibition series is scheduled for July 9.

The Celtics will need to populate the roster of their summer league squad. Some of the players will be drawn from the team’s younger, more inexperienced ranks. Speaking with the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, assistant Celtics general manager Austin Ainge revealed the players currently on the roster who will participate in this year’s Celtics summer league team.

Aaron Nesmith is undecided whether he will take part and unselected 2022 NBA draft prospects will undoubtedly be added to the roster, but let’s take a look at who we know will play for Boston in Las Vegas in July.

How are scouts seeing the NBA future of stashed Boston Celtics guards Yam Madar and Yuhan Begarin?

Do they have a future in the NBA?

The Boston Celtics are among the more liberal users of the so-called “draft-and-stash” strategy to developing players overseas, and currently have a pair of guard prospects stashed overseas in European leagues.

Such players have had mixed results in working out as NBA prospects in the past, though occasionally teams find a diamond in the rough through stashing prospects they do not have the roster or cap space to develop in their own team. Boston’s stashed guards — Yam Madar and Juhann Begarin — were recently evaluated by a European scout who spoke with Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith about how likely they were to make it at the next level.

Let’s take a look at some of Smith’s reporting on the scout’s analysis.

Who are the best overseas players the Boston Celtics could sign to their roster?

These are some of the better overseas options the Celtics could consider.

The Boston Celtics have signed two players to get their roster to the league-required 14-man minimum, but both are on 10-day contracts and may not stick. Add in that the Celtics have an additional regular and also a two way roster slot open, and it is quite likely Boston will be looking to add another player if not several.

There are plenty of potential targets for the Celtics to sign who still need to be bought out before the March 1 deadline, but if Boston isn’t up to wait that process out, they can look to domestically available players who aren’t on a contract, or snap up one of the better players overseas.

Overseas players may of course need to get permission (or be bought out) if under contract with their current club, but there are several the Celtics ought to be considering should they be able to find their way to the NBA — let’s take a look at seven such players.
