Star forward Jaylen Brown will sit to nurse his left hand sprain back to health ahead of the NBA’s 2024 Playoffs, and starting Boston floor general Derrick White (currently afflicted with a lower back contusion picked up earlier this week) will join him in street clothes vs. Sacramento this (April 5) evening.

Reserve wing Jaden Spring will also sit as he rests up his left knee, which has been bothered by tendinopathy for some time now.

All three had been on the injury report as questionable for today’s game before this afternoon.

New analysis weighs in on whether Boston Celtics elect to extend Jaden Springer

“Springer has yet to carve out a role with the Boston Celtics since his in-season trade from the Philadelphia 76ers,” notes Pincus.

New Boston Celtics backup shooting guard Jaden Springer is seen as an unlikely candidate to be extended by his new team this coming 2024 NBA offseason in a new analysis by Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus. The B/R cap guru recently broke down the class of players coming off their rookie deals at the end of the league’s 2023-24 season, and Springer was of course part of that breakdown.

Over the course of his 13 games played with the Celtics, he has started none of them, and averaged 5.5 minutes, and 1.1 points per game while shooting an unnerving, 33.3% from the field with Boston this season.

“Springer has yet to carve out a role with the Boston Celtics since his in-season trade from the Philadelphia 76ers,” notes Pincus. “Unless Boston is patiently high on his upside, he doesn’t seem like an extension candidate.”

Pincus can see some similarities to Payton Pritchard somewhere in Springer’s game (presumably NOT on offense), so there is hope for the young wing.

But we have to agree that this defensive specialist is unlikely to command much attention in free agency, so we agree he is not a likely extension option for Boston. Listen to the “Celtics Lab” podcast on:

Tyrese Maxey gives love to former Sixers teammate Jaden Springer

Tyrese Maxey gives a lot of love to former Philadelphia 76ers teammate Jaden Springer.

BOSTON — A matchup with the Boston Celtics meant the Philadelphia 76ers could see a former teammate, Jaden Springer. The Sixers traded the 28th pick of the 2021 draft to the Celtics at the deadline.

Springer, who admitted he was shocked that the Sixers traded him, was a favorite of his teammates in Philadelphia. He is a hard worker and has a wealth of defensive potential in this league on the perimeter.

Tyrese Maxey, who had 32 points and five assists in Tuesday’s loss to the Celtics, gave love to Springer for his time in Philadelphia.

“I love that dude,” Maxey smiled. “I seen him yesterday (Monday). He came to the hotel and said what’s up. I gave him a hug tonight, and I just I really wish the best for him honestly. Of course, I hope they lose when a play us always, but just he’s worked extremely hard. I think he worked on his jumper. He worked on a lot of different things. He is a competitor, and man I appreciate him.”

Springer has new vets now: Al Horford, Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday and others, but Maxey and the Sixers gave the youngster a lot of wisdom during his time in the City of Brotherly Love.

“I appreciate him allowing me to be in his ear,” Maxey added. “I wanted to be extremely aggressive while he was here. Shoot the ball, play his game because he was a year younger than me, and I watched him play in high school. I know what he’s capable of doing. So I think he’s gonna have a great career and yeah. I love that dude.”

As for Maxey and the Sixers, they have to bounce back at home against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.

Jaden Springer can already see differences between Celtics and Sixers

Jaden Springer revealed the biggest difference between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers.

Jaden Springer joined the Boston Celtics at the February 8 trade deadline. He came highly recommended by Sam Cassell, who is an assistant coach for the Celtics but was previously working under Doc Rivers with the Philadelphia 76ers. The defensive-minded guard made his debut on Thursday (Feb. 22) during the Celtic’s win over the Chicago Bulls.

When speaking to the media following the game, Springer was asked what differences he’s spotted since arriving in Boston. He noted how the Celtics play a more free-flowing brand of basketball, with everybody empowered to make reads based on how the defense is guarding them.

“I feel like there’s more read and react,” Springer said. “You going out there playing based off each other, playing based off your teammates. So you’re just reading what everybody else is doing. It’s not really a set, ‘we have to do this, we have to do that.’ So just going out there and hooping and playing basketball.”

Despite his undoubted potential, and coming highly recommended, Springer faces a battle for playing time this season. He is behind Jrue Holiday, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard in the Celtics guard rotation. However, his defensive upside could be a swing factor in his bid for minutes.

Joe Mazzulla likes his team to be defensively sound. Boston runs multiple different defensive systems as they look to keep opposing offenses on their toes. Springer can fit into each of those seasons and has previously shown value as a point-of-attack defender.

Whether that defense can earn him minutes this season will remain to be seen. Logically, it may be a few months until we see him consistently taking to the court.

How much playing time can we expect new Boston Celtics Xavier Tillman, Sr. and Jaden Springer to get?

The two newest members of Boston’s roster this season made their debut in the ball club’s 129-112 road victory over the Chicago Bulls.

How much playing time can we expect new Boston Celtics Xavier Tillman, Sr. and Jaden Springer to get for the rest of the 2023-24 NBA season with the Celtics? Both Tillman and Springer joined the Celtics organization via trade ahead of the NBA’s Feb. 8 2024 deadline with an eye to bolstering the deep rotation defensively.

The two newest members of Boston’s roster this season made their Celtics debut in the ball club’s 129-112 road victory over the Chicago Bulls earlier this week. And while Springer’s debut was not especially remarkable, you could see Tillman’s impact on the game in the short playing time the former Grizzlies big man was afforded.

CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning took some time to discuss how much playing time Tillman and Springer can expect for the Celtics this season on a recent episode of the “Garden Report” podcast. Check it out below!
