Three Longhorns declare for the 2022 NBA draft

Courtney Ramey, Andrew Joens and Dylan Disu will test NBA draft waters.

The outlook of Texas’ 2022-23 roster has started to take shape in the past couple of weeks with the addition of New Mexico State transfer Jarbai Rice and the return of Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr.

Texas is still waiting on a few more guys from last season’s squad to make a decision about their futures. Courtney Ramey, Andrew Jones and Dylan Disu all declared for the NBA draft this week, each will maintain collegiate eligibility for next season as they have not signed with an agent.

Ramey also decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal to keep all of his options open. He played in over 125 games for the Longhorns while averaging over 10 points per game. Ramey served as one of the best defensive players on the team over the past few seasons.

Jones just wrapped up his sixth season in Austin. He has averaged 12 points per game on 42% shooting in his Texas career. The senior was one of texas’ most consistent players down the stretch of the 2021-22 season.

Disu did not have the season he wanted after transferring in from Vanderbilt. He dealt with a lingering knee injury keeping him from playing at 100%. Another year of development in college could really serve him well if scouts believe he is not quite ready for the next level yet.

The three have until June 13 to withdraw from the NBA draft if they chose to do so.

Texas uses big second half to take down Virginia Tech 81-73

Texas is moving on for the first time since 2014!

Texas is moving on the round of 32 for the first time since Cam Ridley’s buzzer-beater against Arizona State in 2014. The Longhorns save one of their best performances of the season to take down Virginia Tech 81-73.

Each Texas starter finished in double figures led by Andrew Jones’ 21 points. Jones paced the sluggish Texas offense with five threes in the first half.

Texas grabbed the momentum at the end of the first half on a half-court buzzer-beater from Marcus Carr which gave Texas a 34-32 lead going into the locker room.

The Longhorns came out firing all second half with big performances from Timmy Allen, Marcus Carr and Christian Bishop helped Texas cruise to the next round.

The Horns will take on the No. 3 seed Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.

WATCH: Marcus Carr hits ridiculous buzzer beater before halftime

One of the craziest shots of the NCAA tournament so far.

Texas and Virginia Tech are in a back and forth affair midway through their first round matchup in the NCAA tournament.

Andrew Jones has played one of the best halves of basketball in his career. He has 17 of Texas’ 34 points, hitting five shots from behind the arch.

The highlight of the first half came on the very last play. After Virginia Tech took a 32-31 lead with only a couple of seconds left, Marcus Carr hit a near full-court shot to give Texas the halftime lead.

Texas will hope to use the momentum of the buzzer-beater in the second half. If the Horns hold on to win, it will be their first March Madness victory since 2014. Timmy Allen will need to step up after going 1-7 from the field in the first half.

Texas Basketball: Five Longhorns receive All-Big 12 honors

Five Longhorns receive All-Big 12 honors.

Texas basketball did not quite reach its lofty preseason expectations in Chris Beard’s first season in Austin.

Despite not playing to its preseason top-five ranking, Texas still had a solid year. The Horns wrapped up the 2021-2022 regular season with a 21-10 record, good for a No. 4 finish in the Big 12 conference.

Texas saw multiple individuals have nice seasons. Five Longhorns received All-Big 12 honors on Sunday:

  • F Timmy Allen (second team, all-newcomer)
  • G Marcus Carr (third team)
  • G Courtney Ramey (honorable mention)
  • G Andrew Jones (honorable mention)
  • F Christian Bishop (honorable mention)

Texas is a safe bet for an NCAA tournament bid, most experts have the Horns in the 4-6 seed range.

This week Texas will look to defend its Big 12 tournament title and improve its NCAA resume in Kansas City. They are set to take on TCU on Thursday to start the tournament.

No. 20 Texas comes up clutch in the second half to beat TCU 75-66

Texas mounts a second half comeback to win a crucial Big 12 matchup.

No. 20 Texas caught fire in the second half to complete the season sweep of in-state rival TCU on Wednesday.

It was a night where Texas was held to just 1-14 from three-point range and trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half. The Longhorns used clutch play from Andrew Jones and Marcus Carr to extend Texas’ win streak over the Frogs to seven games.

Texas used a 14-2 run sparked by this excellent defensive play from Christian Bishop to start the massive comeback.

Bishop’s play was vital for Texas as Tre Mitchell is still taking a leave of absence from the team. The big man finished with 10 points, five blocks and five rebounds.

Marcus Carr put the game away for good on this dagger of a step-back jumper.

Up next for Texas is a road trip to take on West Virginia. The Longhorns took care of the Mountaineers 74-59 in their first matchup back in Jan.

Red River Madness: Texas takes down Oklahoma in a thriller

Texas breaks the hearts of the Sooners yet again.

No. 20 Texas got a much needed road win over arch-rival Oklahoma on Tuesday.

Both teams traded punches for the entirety of the game but the Longhorns came out with an 80-78 overtime victory.

In typical Andrew Jones fashion, he got Texas going early on against the Sooners. Jones finished with 20 points including a clutch three late in the second half to give Texas a four-point lead.

Oklahoma scored on consecutive possessions, sending the game into overtime tied at 66.

The Longhorns and Sooners went back and forth through overtime before Timmy Allen gave Texas the lead for good with this putback:

Texas came through when they needed, shooting 5-7 in overtime. Marcus Carr would add a free throw to ice the game and send Texas home as winners.

Up next for Texas is a matchup with No. 11 Texas Tech on Saturday.

Timmy Allen’s 24 points helps No. 20 Texas upset No. 8 Kansas

A statement victory for Texas.

No. 20 Texas secured their biggest win of the season thus far with a hard-fought upset over No. 8 Kansas on Monday night.

Timmy Allen led the Horns with 24 points on 11-17 shooting. Allen hit tough shot after tough shot down the stretch including the go-ahead jumper with 24 seconds left.

The electric crowd inside the Frank Erwin Center played into Texas’ favor all night long.

This steal and slam by Andrew Jones prompted the first of many huge roars from the crowd.

Getting the ball in Tre Mitchell’s hands was a key part of Chris Beard’s game plan from the start. Mitchell played aggressively inside, getting to the free-throw line four times in the first half.

A ridiculous buzzer-beater three from Marcus Carr gave Texas a 40-35 lead at the half.

The second half continued to be a back and forth affair with neither team able to break away until Texas hit a bit of a cold stretch late.

The Jayhawks took a four-point lead with just over a minute to play before Mitchell banked in a three to cut the lead to one.

Texas was able to force a turnover leading to Timmy Allen’s clutch jumper to take a 77-76 lead which Texas would not give up.

Carr put the finishing touch on the 79-76 victory with two free throws to send the Texas fans home happy.

No. 17 Texas dominates West Virginia 75-59 behind excellent guard play

Texas starts off Big 12 play with a statement victory over West Virginia.

Chris Beard could not have asked for a better performance from his team to start Big 12 conference play. Texas totally dismantled West Virginia from start to finish.

West Virginia had no answers for Texas after getting news that star player Taz Sherman would miss the game due to COVID-19 protocols. Sherman has averaged over 20 points per game this season.

Senior guard Courtney Ramey started the game on fire, scoring eight points in the first ten minutes of the game. His three-pointer to break a 14-14 tie kicked off an 18-2 scoring run for the Horns.

Ramey and Marcus Carr had an excellent sequence at the end of the first half to keep Texas in total control of the game.

Carr finished with 20 points, four rebounds and two assists. His best game as a Longhorn despite some rumors of a possible transfer this week.

If Texas gets more performances like today’s from Carr and the Texas backcourt, they will be a tough team to beat.

As a team, Texas forced 21 turnovers and shot 94% from the foul line. A good formula for more success down the road.

No. 17 Texas takes down Stanford 60-53 in Las Vegas

No. 17 Texas charges past Stanford behind big days from Jones and Allen.

It is better to win ugly than to lose pretty and that is exactly what Texas did on Sunday against the Stanford Cardinal.

For the first 17 minutes of the game, the Longhorns and Cardinal showed very little separation. Texas then put their foot on the gas to close out the half up 34-27.

The Horns kept that momentum and came out of halftime firing. Texas took advantage of a few turnovers to go on a 13-0 run, taking a commanding lead into the 10-minute mark.

Stanford clawed back into the game as Texas went on a six-minute scoring drought.

Texas held on to win 60-53 despite the late surge from Stanford.

The story of the game was the turnovers. Texas played aggressively on defense and it showed as they forced 22 Standford turnovers. While the Texas guards did not light it up in the box score, they did a good job of playing clean basketball and limiting turnovers of their own.
