Patrick Beverley reacts to Sixers trading Filip Petrusev to Clippers

Patrick Beverley reacts to the Philadelphia 76ers sending Filip Petrusev to the Los Angeles Clippers in the James Harden deal.

The Philadelphia 76ers pulled off a deal in the wee hours of the morning on Tuesday to send James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers. It’s what he wanted all along, and both sides can now move on after a tumultuous offseason and his not playing in Philadelphia’s first three games of the season.

Along with Harden, the Sixers will send PJ Tucker and rookie Filip Petrusev to the Clippers in the deal. Philadelphia brought in Tucker in free agency in 2022 and Petrusev was a 2021 second-rounder before he spent a few seasons overseas.

Patrick Beverley took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to react to the trading of Petrusev. Beverley stood up for Petrusev in a preseason game against the Brooklyn Nets when the rookie got into it with Ben Simmons and affectionately called him “Filip with an F.”

Beverley and Petrusev looked like they had developed a good rookie-veteran relationship, but it will be interesting to see how the Sixers move forward. The return of Marcus Morris Sr., Nic Batum, Robert Covington and KJ Martin plus a slew of draft picks could be flipped for another impact player.

Filip Petrusev among 76ers players involved in James Harden trade

After months of speculation, the 76ers have agreed to trade James Harden to the Clippers for a package of players and draft picks.

After months of trade speculation, the Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly agreed to trade James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers for a package of players and draft picks.

The 76ers are sending Harden, PJ Tucker and Filip Petrusev to the Clippers in exchange for Marcus Morris, Nic Batum, Robert Covington and KJ Martin. Philadelphia will waive veteran Danny Green to create the roster space needed to facilitate the trade.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN first reported the news.

The Clippers are also sending the Sixers an unprotected 2028 first-round pick, two second-round picks, a 2029 pick swap and a first-round pick from Oklahoma City. They will send the Thunder a 2027 first-round pick swap.

The Sixers will maintain their cap flexibility with the trade after acquiring players on expiring contracts. They can potentially have as much as $65 million in cap space next summer as the front office looks to build around Joel Embiid.

The Clippers will add Harden and Tucker to a core that features Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Russell Westbrook, Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac. The team is still determining if it will keep Petrusev after the trade becomes official.

The acquisition of Harden moved the Clippers’ odds of winning the championship from plus-2000 to plus-1300, according to the BetMGM Sportsbook. The 76ers’ odds dropped to plus-2800.

Rookie Filip Petrusev learning from Joel Embiid, Sixers’ vets every day

Rookie big man Filip Petrusev finds himself learning a lot from Joel Embiid and the other veterans on the Philadelphia 76ers.

CAMDEN, N.J. — Young Philadelphia 76ers rookie big man Filip Petrusev is looking to get off on the right foot in his NBA career. After spending a few years overseas before joining the Sixers, he is looking to make an impact.

Luckily for Petrusev, he has some great veterans to lean on and learn from.

The biggest one is Joel Embiid. The reigning league MVP has been setting a good example in practice, and Petrusev has been taking lessons from the big fella.

“I didnā€™t know how strong he was, really,” laughed Petrusev. “Itā€™s one thing on TV and I was able to play with (Nikola) Jokic last summer so I got to experience that as well, but this is a different level of physicality that he has that I wasnā€™t aware of. Seeing how on top of that skill that he has, you can always pick up something from him. Every day.”

Along with Embiid, other veterans on the team such as Patrick Beverley, PJ Tucker and Tobias Harris have made their impact felt on Petrusev. They have set good examples for him.

“Heā€™s (Embiid) obviously the MVP, so he does his own thing, but yeah, heā€™ll let me know something if he sees it,” Petrusev continued. “Iā€™m very blessed with the vets that we have. Pat Bev, PJ, Tobias, theyā€™ve been great to all us young guys I think so itā€™s been really great with all of them.”

Sixers’ Filip Petrusev reacts to hard foul from Ben Simmons, double techs

Philadelphia 76ers big man Filip Petrusev reacts to the hard foul from Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons and the double techs.

NEW YORK — At the 8:38 mark of the fourth quarter of Monday’s preseason win over the Brooklyn Nets, young Philadelphia 76ers big man Filip Petrusev grabbed an offensive rebound. He went back up for a shot but was met by Nets guard Ben Simmons, whose hard foul sent Petrusev to the floor.

The rookie big man got up and said something to Simmons and the two began jawing, which led to both getting hit with double techs. It was a sign of toughness from Petrusev indicating he wasn’t going to be pushed around.

“It was just a really, really hard foul,” Petrusev said afterward. “I thought it was uncalled for because he couldnā€™t get the ball. It was just I think, I donā€™t wanna say a dirty play, but it was so unnecessary, so I just let him know that. He talked back and you all saw the rest.”

Patrick Beverley, who was sticking up for Petrusev, was jawing at Simmons as well and he picked up his second technical foul, which led to his ejection. Because he was sticking up for Petrusev, coach Nick Nurse let that one go.

“Pat Bev was sticking up for Filip on that play from the bench,” Nurse said. “So there is some good camaraderie and teamwork there.”

Petrusev was happy Beverley had his back on the play and was thankful to have the veteran on his side in this situation.

“In that particular situation, he just stuck up for me like a real vet,” said the rookie big man. “Iā€™m just thankful for him.”

Then again, this is nothing new for Beverley. He is going to stick up for his teammates and let the opposition know stuff like that isn’t acceptable.

“He got my back there,” Petrusev said of Beverley. “Not just there, in practice, too, and not just for me, for everybody. Heā€™s there. Heā€™s bringing crazy energy, heā€™s there for everybody, he supports everybody, so I really felt that. On the 3 even, I felt he had my back and he was supporting me so that gave me confidence.”

Player grades: Tyrese Maxey plays well, Sixers fall to Celtics in preseason

Tyrese Maxey plays well, but the Philadelphia 76ers fall to the Boston Celtics in the preseason opener.
