Howie Roseman explains why Eagles haven’t extended Zack Baun, other key free agents

Eagles GM Howie Roseman could be looking to stack up on compensatory picks after he explained why the Eagles didn’t hand out contract extensions to key 2025 free agents like Zack Baun, Josh Sweat and others

The Eagles have 19 pending free agents, and with some big names looking to cash in, the Philadelphia defense could look quite different in 2024.

During his Super Bowl opening-night press conference, the Eagles GM provided insight into his thinking, explaining to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia why he didn’t extend contracts to several key free agents.

“Once you start doing that, it’s almost like, are you picking favorites?” Roseman said. “And the other guys start saying, ‘What about me?’ And they start playing for themselves as opposed to the team.

“Now, we’ve seen that probably costs you money in the long run as you’re doing it. But when you have an opportunity to compete for a championship, it’s worth that sacrifice I think.”

Philadelphia has several critical free agents who probably want to return to the Eagles but could land massive paydays on the open market. Zack Baun, Mekhi Becton, Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, Isaiah Rodgers, and Kenneth Gainwell could land lucrative deals when the new league year begins.

Roseman admitted that he watches Baun and Becton’s price tag grow daily but sacrificed potential long-term deals for a Super Bowl run without distractions.

“I’ll do anything for a championship,” Roseman said. “So if that’s the trade-off and maybe we lose a player, I won’t like that, but I’ll take it.”

The six free agents listed above will all have major suitors on the open market, but if those players depart, the Eagles can land upwards of four compensatory picks.

2025 Free Agency: Can Steelers afford Tee Higgins’ massive payday?

The Steelers may be interested in Tee Higgins, but his price tag could force them to consider a cheaper alternative.

The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves once again in search of receiver help heading into 2025. Bengals WR  Tee Higgins, arguably the biggest free-agent wide receiver this offseason, has been tied to the Black and Gold as of late. However, he may prove too expensive for the Steelers’ taste.

According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, Higgins is expected to break the $30 million per year mark. Fowler noted that he has heard discussions of Higgins’ contract being lower—closer to Philadelphia Eagles WR DeVonta Smith’s $25 million per year—but ultimately, more team personnel believe it will be much higher:

“The rest saw him breaking into the $30 million range, based on his status as a No. 1-caliber receiver and the number of teams desperate for pass-catching help.”

This could prove troublesome for the rest of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster, with T.J. Watt, George Pickens, and DeShon Elliott set to hit free agency in 2026—all of whom could command massive contracts in their own right.

Should the Pittsburgh Steelers settle for a cheaper veteran option, such as WR Amari Cooper, or is Higgins’ talent too great to pass up in 2025 free agency?

DeVonta Smith becomes Eagles all-time postseason receiving yards leader

Former Alabama WR DeVonta Smith makes postseason history with the Philadelphia Eagles.

For the second time in three seasons, the Philadelphia Eagles are headed to the NFC Championship game with a Super Bowl appearance on the line. It’s the fourth straight post-season appearance for the Eagles who have relied heavily on former Alabama Crimson Tide standouts QB Jalen Hurts, WR DeVonta Smith and IOL Landon Dickerson during that run.

Smith specifically has been outstanding for the Eagles since being selected No. 10 overall in the 2021 NFL draft after his 2020 Heisman Trophy campaign. During his four seasons with Philadelphia, Smith has posted 343 receptions for 4,492 yards and 28 touchdowns including the playoffs.

After a four-reception performance for 21 yards against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Smith passed Harold Carmichael (465 yards) to become the Eagles All-Time Post-Season Receiving Yards Leader with 481. It’s been a relatively quiet Post-Season for Smith so far with just eight receptions for 76 yards, but if the Eagles want to get past their divisional rivals the Washington Commanders next week, Smith will need to see a much larger role.

With future Hall of Fame RB Saquon Barkley and All-Pro WR AJ Brown both having career years their are a lot of mouths to feed, but Smith has always served best as the silent assassin.
