Chiefs waive WR Nikko Remigio with injury designation

Training camp standout Nikko Remigio was waived by the #Chiefs on Tuesday with an injury designation.

The Kansas City Chiefs waived rookie receiver Nikko Remigio with an injury designation Tuesday amid a flurry of roster cuts.

It was an expected move as the team cut down to the mandated 53-man roster. Remigio was a standout early in training camp and had an impressive showing during preseason Week 1, but he missed the final two preseason games with a shoulder injury.

It would have already been difficult for the undrafted rookie to make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster, as the team already kept seven WRs, rare for an Andy Reid-coached team.

Despite waiving Remigio, the 5-foot-9, 187-pound Fresno State product still has a chance to return to the Chiefs’ practice squad if another team doesn’t pick him up off waivers. With Remigio’s eye-catching preseason performance and his prowess as a returner on special teams, it’s possible he will end up seeing some time on the Chiefs’ roster this season if any injuries occur to other receivers.

The Kansas City Chiefs opened the preseason on Sunday with a shocking loss. Exhibition results rarely impact a team’s mindset before the regular season starts, the miscues become teachable moments throughout the rest of training camp.

The first-team offense wasn’t its usual sharp self in the brief time they were on the field. The defense wasn’t much better, surrendering seventeen unanswered points in the first half leading to some concerns over the unit’s effectiveness without Chris Jones. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid did discuss a positive from the game with the standout play of undrafted rookie Nikko Remigio during Tuesday’s press conference.

“He had a really nice game,” said Reid. “He Did some really good things both special teams-wise and in the throw game part of it, you know, the catching part, so we’ll see how this thing goes. You know, the shoulders back in and all that, but we just have to see how he does.”

Remingo had four catches for 71 yards but suffered a shoulder injury during Tuesday’s practice.

Reid has another preseason game this Saturday night to correct some issues back in Arizona, where the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII. Remigio may not be available after injury, but his performance has turned heads.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Nikko Remigio has been a standout at training camp, rising to relevance as an undrafted rookie in St. Joseph. His talent is evident in nearly every repetition he takes at Missouri Western State University, but less clear is the proper pronunciation of his last name, which he clarified in a post on Twitter.

The lack of any “G” sound in his last name was surprising to many fans who had been pronouncing his surname “ruh-me-GEE-oh” during the preseason. The Philippine flag in his Twitter bio is a good indication that this name may be of Spanish origin, which would account for the difference in perceived pronunciation.

Ancestry.com states that the name Remigio is of Spanish origin as well, stemming from the Latin name Remigius, which may be shortened to Remy.

Chiefs Kingdom is sure to pronounce his surname correctly moving forward as he continues to work toward securing a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster.

Kansas City Chiefs rookie receiver Nikko Remigio is beginning to earn a reputation as a human highlight reel for his catches in training camp.

One week removed from a crazy fade-away catch that saw Remigio land straight on his back and pop up as if nothing happened (against the team’s top cornerback, no less), Remigio reeled in yet another insane catch in practice — this time a full-stretch dive.

This slightly-overthrown pass was expertly caught by the 5-foot-9, 187-pound Fresno State product despite landing hard on his abdomen. The tenacity it takes to make a catch like that — and make it look relatively easy — is outstanding.

With highlight-reel clips like these, Remigio may earn himself a spot on the Chiefs’ roster if he keeps up the spectacular work during practice and preseason. It also helps that Remigio is an adept punt and kick returner — he earned over 1,600 total return yards and three total return touchdowns in college.

If Remigio continues to play well and catch the eye of both coach Andy Reid and special teams coordinator Dave Toub, the team may have no choice but to find a way to keep him around.
