NFL rumors: Chiefs to tender exclusive rights free agent DL Malik Herring

The #Chiefs are expected to tender exclusive rights free agent Malik Herring.

The defensive line keeps familiar depth for the upcoming 2024 season as the Kansas City Chiefs lock up one of their own ahead of free agency.

Defensive lineman Malik Herring is staying in Kansas City for another season following a report from Chiefs Digest he’s received a qualifying tender from the team. The 26-year-old was set to become an exclusive rights free agent (ERFA) for the Chiefs, avoiding the deadline. He was a steady contributor in limited action last season, tallying ten tackles and 1.5 sacks in seven games.

The massive re-signing of All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones became official Monday as the front office attempts to continue building around the star. Herring has floated between being active and inactive on gameday but has played well when given time on the field, significantly raising his value on Joe Cullen’s defensive line.

Herring secured four tackles in the postseason on the way to Super Bowl LVIII, showing Steve Spagnuolo’s trust in him during pressure situations.

Herring will head into 2024 with an opportunity to compete for more playing time in the defense’s rotation. The former Georgia Bulldog was an undrafted free agent in 2021, signing with the Chiefs shortly after that year’s NFL Draft.

Chiefs DL Malik Herring led Kansas City in PFF grade vs. Chargers

#Chiefs DL Malik Herring earned Kansas City’s best PFF grade for his performance against the Chargers in Week 18.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ remarkable win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 18 presented an opportunity for many of the team’s lesser-known players to get meaningful snaps against a bitter divisional rival.

Kansas City elected to rest many of its starters for the game after cementing their spot as the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoffs in Week 17. One defensive lineman, Malik Herring, made the most of his chance to see the field against Los Angeles.

He was given an 84.8 grade from Pro Football Focus for his effort against the Chargers, which was the best mark of any Chiefs player in the win.

While Herring is unlikely to see significant action in the playoffs, his stellar performance in Week 18 may make him a candidate to get more playing time next season.

It isn’t often that a relatively unknown player leads a championship-caliber roster in any category, so Herring’s accomplishment against Los Angeles shouldn’t go unnoticed by fans or his coaches.

Former Georgia Bulldogs Mecole Hardman, Malik Herring head to Super Bowl

Hardman & Herring vs. Davis & Dean in SBLVII

Former Georgia Bulldogs receiver Mecole Hardman and defensive lineman Malik Herring are headed to Super Bowl LVII with the Kansas City Chiefs after the Chiefs 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship on Sunday night.

Hardman, Herring and the Chiefs will face the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles, including former Bulldogs Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Hardman is currently listed as questionable for the Super Bowl after reagravating a pelvis injury on Sunday night.

Hardman racked up 297 yards on 25 catches and six total touchdowns in 2022.

Super Bowl LVII is set to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. ET and will air on CBS.

Chiefs DE Malik Herring is next man up with DE Mike Danna injured

#Chiefs DE Mike Danna has been ruled out for Week 3 and Andy Reid says that DE Malik Herring is the next man up at the position.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without DE Mike Danna for Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts. Danna suffered a calf injury at the end of the Week 2 game and has missed practice all week. Reid officially ruled him out during his Friday press conference.

It’s a big loss for the Chiefs, as Danna has the third-most pressures on the team through two weeks according to PFF. A big theme this week has been the “next man up” mentality, with Willie Gay Jr.’s suspension at the forefront of the discussion. This situation is no different for Kansas City.

While rookie DE George Karlaftis and veterans Frank Clark and Carlos Dunlap will play the majority of the snaps in Indy, Chiefs HC Andy Reid revealed that they have one player in mind as the next man up in place of Danna. Reid was asked by ESPN’s Adam Teicher whether the next man up would be former fourth-round draft pick Joshua Kaindoh.

“He’s not right now,” Reid said. “We’ve had more than we need (depth-wise) there. We’ll let 94 (Malik Herring) jump in there and get a few reps, potentially.”

Herring sat out the 2021 NFL season with a knee injury that he suffered in practice at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. He made the 53-man roster this year, but has been a healthy scratch to this point. Should he play on Sunday against the Colts as Reid suggests, he’ll be making his NFL debut.

“(It’s a) dream come true to make my first NFL debut,” Herring told Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick. “I can’t wait to see how it goes.”

The former Georgia Bulldog recorded three pressures during the 2022 NFL preseason, including one sack against the Chicago Bears in preseason Week 1. Listed at 6-3 and 275 pounds, Herring has a good combination of size and speed, which should make him difficult for tackles to handle when aligned outside. A big part of Danna’s game was the versatility to play inside on clear passing downs. It’s unclear whether the Chiefs will ask Herring to do the same.

Former Georgia Bulldog makes Chiefs’ roster year after tearing ACL

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Malik Herring has made the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Malik Herring has made the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster. Herring was not selected in the 2021 NFL draft after tearing his right ACL at the 2021 Senior Bowl.

Herring was projected to be selected in the middle rounds of the draft before his injury. Herring’s late January 2021 injury was a key reason he was not picked in the 2021 draft.

Herring’s presence helped Georgia have great run defenses that were also disruptive of quarterbacks. Herring had four career sacks, four career pass deflections and 76 career tackles at Georgia.

Now, Herring will have a chance to earn playing time and a spot on the game day active roster. Herring is dealing with an oblique injury, but is happy to make Kansas City’s roster.

The former Georgia Bulldog standout had a strong start in the preseason. He recorded four tackles, a half sack and a quarterback hit in his first game this preseason.

Here’s how Herring reacted to making Kansas City’s roster:

Herring overcame a lot to make Kansas City’s roster. An NFL player’s rookie season is critical for his development.

5 underrated Chiefs performances in preseason Week 1 vs. Bears

Upon closer inspection, these five #Chiefs had great performances in preseason Week 1.

The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t come away with a win against the Chicago Bears in Week 1 of the preseason, but they did get some very valuable snaps for members of their roster.

The coaching staff will use those snaps to help evaluate players as they whittle down the roster to 53 players at the start of the NFL’s regular season. The first wave of roster cuts comes on Tuesday, Aug. 16, with Kansas City needing to trim its roster from 85 to 90 players.

While everyone knows the standout performers from the Chiefs’ Week 1 preseason game, there was a handful that might have flown under the radar. Here’s a look at five of the team’s underrated performances in Week 1:

Chiefs DE Malik Herring delivers breakfast to Mary Persons High School

The offseason provides players around the NFL time to enjoy and appreciate life off the field. Personal projects and philanthropy are some of the top activities as players continue to give back to those who helped them achieve their goals.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed defensive end Malik Herring in 2021 as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Georgia. Herring never touched the field last season as he took a redshirt year rehabbing a torn ACL suffered during practice at the 2021 Senior Bowl. The former Bulldog also spent his high school years in the Peach State attending Mary Persons High School in Forsyth, Georgia.

Last week, Herring, alongside his mother, decided to surprise his old high school with a complimentary breakfast. The 24-year old was shown in a video posted to the school’s social media handing out bags of McDonald’s breakfast he purchased for the staff. The high school is well-respected in the community, especially its football team.

“All kids grow up around here looking forward to playing for Mary Persons and representing that black and gold,” Herring’s mother, Sabrina Watts-Mays, said last year during an interview with WMAZ News 13 in Georgia.

Herring will be an interesting player to watch during offseason training as the Chiefs are always looking to develop talented defensive linemen. They could certainly use some help at edge rusher this upcoming season and if he returns to the lineup healthy it could be a big development. The second-year player will have an opportunity to see if his knee has recovered very soon with voluntary offseason workouts beginning next month.

Chiefs place DE Malik Herring on non-football injury list, DB Armani Watts on PUP

The #Chiefs have placed DE Malik Herring on the active/non-football injury list and DB Armani Watts on the active/physically unable to perform list. More here:

The Kansas City Chiefs made two minor transactions on Saturday, relating to a pair of injured players.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have placed DE Malik Herring on the non-football injury list and DB Armani Watts on the physically unable to perform list.

Herring’s placement on the non-football injury list was expected. He sustained an ACL injury away from the team during Senior Bowl practices prior to the 2021 NFL draft. He’ll have the opportunity to recover while he’s on the list. The team did not receive a roster exemption for Herring, which means he will count toward the 90-man offseason roster.

If Herring remains on the active non-football injury list by the final roster cut date ahead of the 2021 NFL season, the Chiefs can move him to the reserve non-football injury list. If he’s placed on the reserve non-football injury list, the rules are similar to the PUP list. Herring wouldn’t be allowed to practice for six weeks and the team would eventually have to decide between activating him or placing him on the injured reserve list.

Watts, who is dealing with a foot fracture according to Andy Reid, was placed on the active physically unable to perform list. This means that Watts suffered his injury while with the team, unlike Herring. Watts can be activated at any point throughout training camp with this designation and he’ll also count toward the 90-man offseason roster.

If Watts remains on the list through 53-man roster cuts, he’ll revert to the reserve/PUP list. Players on the reserve/PUP list are required to miss the first six weeks of the regular season and if they’re not healthy after those six weeks, the team will be forced to either activate him or move him to injured reserve. The fact that Watts was placed on the active version of this list suggests that the team expects him back at some point during training camp.

Senior Bowl: 10 defensive linemen for the Eagles to watch

Here are 10 defensive linemen for the Eagles to watch at the 2021 Reese’s Senior Bowl

The Philadelphia Eagles will face legit salary cap questions heading into the 2021 offseason and if the Birds move on from Brandon Graham or Derek Barnett, the defensive line could become a position of need.

The NFL draft starts in Mobile, and there are some heavyweight pass rushers and defensive linemen in attendance.

Here are 10 that Howie Roseman and company should keep an eye on.

Georgia Bulldogs receive official measurements at Reese’s Senior Bowl

Six Georgia Bulldogs are attending this year’s Senior Bowl and they all received official measurements.

Six Georgia Bulldogs are attending this year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl. Georgia’s Ben Cleveland, Monty Rice, DJ Daniel, Mark Webb, Tre’ McKitty, and Malik Herring are all participating in the Senior Bowl and the events leading up to it.

Richard LeCounte accepted an invitation to the game, but later decided against participating. Another player to watch is former UGA transfer quarterback Jamie Newman, who sat out the season, but is at the Senior Bowl. He has as much to gain or lose as anybody at the Senior Bowl.

The Senior Bowl is a post-season game that is compiled of some of college football’s most talented seniors. It serves as preparation for the NFL Draft. The practices and game are heavily attended by NFL scouts who have had limited opportunities to see players in person this season.

The 2021 Senior Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 30 and will showcase a large number of college football’s top NFL Draft prospects. Prospects have no NFL Combine this year, so the Senior Bowl is more important than usual. Additionally, Georgia’s pro day is especially important this year.

Here’s all of the Georgia Bulldogs who received official measurements at the Senior Bowl:
