2024 NFL draft: Chargers awarded one compensatory pick

The Chargers will receive a seventh-round comp pick for their loss of Drue Tranquill.

The Chargers will have an extra pick in the NFL draft.

Los Angeles will receive a seventh-round comp pick for their loss of linebacker Drue Tranquill, who signed with the Chiefs last offseason.

Tranquill appeared in 16 games (eight starts), amassing 78 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass deflected.

For his efforts, Tranquill recently re-signed with Kansas City on a three-year, $19 million deal with $13 million guaranteed.

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams who lose out on significant players in free agency and are awarded to those teams the next year.

The pick given to teams is calculated using a formula that includes several qualifiers, including the average per year (APY) of a contract signed, the percentage of snaps a player plays, and their awards and accolades for their performance, such as the AP All-Pro list or PFWA’s list.

The Chargers currently have eight picks for April’s draft.

Chiefs re-sign LB Drue Tranquill to 3-year $19m contract

The #Chiefs re-signed linebacker Drue Tranquill on Thursday night before free agency opens on March 11.

The Kansas City Chiefs re-signed linebacker Drue Tranquill to a three-year $19 million contract on Thursday, March 7.

Tranquill joined Kansas City on a one-year deal last season and was a key contributor in the Chiefs’ run to Super Bowl LVIII.

This contract will keep Tranquill in Western Missouri through the rest of his 30s and ensures that Kansas City will maintain continuity at the linebacker position while other areas of the Chiefs’ roster remain in limbo.

With Tranquill locked up for the next three years, general manager Brett Veach can now begin work on extending star defensive tackle Chris Jones who is set to hit the open market in free agency if he doesn’t re-sign with Kansas City before March 11.

While it wasn’t expected that Tranquill would be the first domino to fall for the Chiefs ahead of the legal tampering period next week, it could prove consequential for Kansas City’s defense that the team managed to retain him for the foreseeable future.

PFF names as Packers as ‘potential landing spot’ for free agent LB Drue Tranquill

Could the Packers look to Drue Tranquill — who just won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs — for help at linebacker?

With linebacker a big need for the Packers, PFF’s Brad Spielberger named Green Bay as a potential landing spot for free agent Drue Tranquill.

“New Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley plans to bring an attacking 4-3 base defense,” wrote Spielberger, “which could make Tranquill a great fit after he excelled on Steve Spagnuolo’s Chiefs unit, extremely efficient as a blitzer and ever-reliable in coverage.”

Tranquill spent the 2023 season with the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs after playing his first four NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.

As Spielberger mentions, Tranquill excelled as a blitzer and in coverage. Over the last two seasons, Tranquill posted 37 pressures, including 22 with the blitz-heavy chiefs, and 10 sacks. Among all linebackers in 2023, Tranquill’s 22 pressures ranked as the seventh-most while he also ranked fifth in pass-rush productivity.

In coverage during that same two year span, Tranquil held pass catchers to just 8.9 yards per catch with two interceptions and three pass breakups. This past year, in particular, he was a very efficient tackler, missing only eight of his 98 attempts, while ranking 12th in stops—or a tackle that constitutes a “failure” for the offense, as PFF describes it.

With Tranquill’s ability as a blitzer and in coverage, he would be an ideal weak-side linebacker in Jeff Hafley’s 4-3 defense. Quay Walker could also be a good fit for that role, or as the do-it-all middle linebacker.

When it comes to Walker, Hafley doesn’t want to pigeonhole him into one specific role. Instead, Hafley’s ultimate goal is to put Walker in consistent positions to make plays, regardless of where that would be.

“Quay’s a talented player,” said Hafley at his introductory press conference. “As we build this thing, we’re going to make sure he’s in position to make a lot of plays. So whatever we feel, as we piece this together, where that is, that’s where we’ll put him.”

The addition of a player like Tranquill would provide Hafley with that flexibility to move Walker around because as the roster is currently constructed at the linebacker position, Walker is really the only one who could man those weak-side responsibilities.

Through contract restructures and veteran cuts, the Packers do have the ability to really create whatever cap space they need to be active in free agency. Of course, the downside to too many restructures is that they push cap charges to future seasons, reducing salary cap flexibility at that time.

“I think it just depends on the player,” said Gutekunst on spending in free agency. “It depends on who that is and how he can impact our football team. I don’t think we’ll shy away from adding impact players if we have to push things down the road. We’d prefer not to do that, but at the same time, this is about winning and trying to win a championship, so if that’s something that makes sense, we’ll do it.”

However, with Tranquill, it’s not as if he is going to break the bank. PFF projects that he will land a two-year deal worth $6.75 million, including $3.75 million guaranteed.

Linebacker is probably one of those positions that the Packers will address in both free agency and in the draft at some point. Isaiah McDuffie is in the final season of his rookie contract, while De’Vondre Campbell is a potential cut candidate.

5 LBs the Colts should target in free agency

Taking a look at LB depth options in free agency.

The Indianapolis Colts are set at linebacker with Zaire Franklin and E.J. Speed in 2024 but the position doesn’t have a lot of depth entering the offseason.

As of this writing, Segun Olubi and Grant Stuard are the only players under contract. While I like what Olubi showed in 2023 and Stuard as a core special teamer, competition for the third linebacker spot on the depth chart needs to be considered.

Plus, the future of the position has to be kept in mind this offseason with Franklin and Speed entering the final year of their contracts.

With the starting roles locked up, I don’t foresee Chris Ballard targeting the top linebackers that are set to hit the market so players who will likely command a payday and a starting role have been omitted.

Here are five linebackers that should be on Ballard’s radar if he chooses to find some depth via free agency:

Ranking 2024’s top 12 free-agent linebackers

“Uce” leads the way for this year’s free-agent linebackers.

As they do with pass rusher Brian Burns, the Carolina Panthers have another top defender ready to hit the open market in linebacker Frankie Luvu. And also like Burns, “Uce” may be sticking around for 2024.

But until we find that out, here’s Luvu and the very best of his free-agent contemporaries:

Drue Tranquill – future professional wrestler?

The Kansas City Chiefs held their Super Bowl parade and celebration on Wednesday and by now we all know of the horrific events that took place.

Before things went south there was a celebration that not just the city seemingly half of the Midwest came out for and a former Notre Dame star’s epic interview during it has gone viral.

Drue Tranquill, who played at Notre Dame through 2018 and played with the Chargers before signing with the Chiefs this past off-season gave an interview for the ages during the celebration.

Let’s just say Tranquill wasn’t buying into the Chiefs being any sort of underdog!

Congrats to Drue!

Notre Dame was represented on both sides of Super Bowl 58 with linebacker Drue Tranquill on the Kansas City Chiefs and offensive guard Aaron Banks on the San Francisco 49ers.

The classic game went to overtime where the Chiefs won on a walk-off touchdown pass to cap a thriller which wound up being their third Super Bowl title in five seasons.

Tranquill recorded a pair of tackles in the Chiefs victory and became the 46th former Notre Dame player to win a Super Bowl as a player all-time.

Super Bowl LVIII: Staff Predictions for Chiefs vs. 49ers

What happens on Sunday?

The final game of the NFL season is upon us as we not have to hear two of the worst words in the vocabulary of any sports fan: off-season.

But who wins Sunday’s game between the Chiefs and 49ers in Las Vegas?

Will Patrick Mahomes take a step in trying to chase down Tom Brady and his seven rings?  He’ll need the Chiefs defense to stay nasty to do so.

Or will it be the unlikely hero Brock Purdy helping the 49ers to what would be their sixth Super Bowl championship in franchise history?

Who wins and why?

Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire staff sees playing out on Super Bowl Sunday:

Chiefs stock watch: Which players impressed during AFC Championship Game vs. Ravens?

Here’s a look at the stock trends for some #Chiefs players after the AFC Championship Game victory over the #Ravens. | from: @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs are returning to the Super Bowl to defend their title following their 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Head coach Andy Reid and his team are crowned AFC Champions again and look ahead to a business trip to Las Vegas in two weeks.

The Chiefs’ defense was more than up for slowing down potential league MVP Lamar Jackson—defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s unit utilized pressure throughout the game. The game consisted of crucial red zone takeaways and excellent coverage in the secondary.

The defensive line overpowered the highly respected Ravens’ protection schemes to stall one of the league’s best offenses to a crawl; George Karlaftis, Tershawn Wharton, Charles Omenihu, and Justin Reid collected a sack.

On offense, the combination of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce reminded the world that they are the best in the business. There were crushing runs from Isiah Pacheco and solid play from rookie Rashes Rice. The game-sealing catch from Marquez Valdez-Scantling was poetic justice after a highly criticized regular season.

The Chiefs are ready for a trip to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII to defend their title and etch their name in history as one of the best dynasties.

Here’s a look at how the stock is trending for some players after the AFC Championship victory at M&T Bank Stadium:
