Former Michigan State football defensive end transfers to Appalachian State

A former Michigan State defensive end has transferred to Appalachian State

Another member of Mark Dantonio’s last recruiting class has officially transferred. Michigan State football defensive end Michael Fletcher announced on Monday that he will be transferring to Appalachian State.

Fletcher spent three seasons with the Spartans, and had drummed up some excitement in his freshman year after getting three sacks in just four games. However, he hasn’t recorded a sack since that first year.

Appalachian State vs Marshall Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Yeah, the Marshall run defense has been special lately. It’s about to see something different with the Appalachian State ground game.

That doesn’t mean the Mountaineers can’t stall – they sure did in the loss to Coastal Carolina – but when they’re on, forget it.

5-1 when they run for more than 90 yards, they’re going to keep forcing the issue against a Marshall defensive front that’s totally dominant against good ground attacks.

However, thanks to Chase Brice, Appalachian State can throw, too.

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why Marshall Will Win

The run defense really is just that special.

James Madison stopped Appalachian State cold, Texas State was able to come up with a ton of big plays, and Coastal Carolina did the job.

Yeah, Appalachian State ran well on Texas A&M and ripped through North Carolina, but the Marshall run defense is just that good.

As long as the offense can limit the turnovers and get its own ground game going …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are 5-4, and both teams are struggling to get over the finish line and get bowl eligible, but Marshall has to win two of its last three.

Yeah, the Marshall run defense has been incredible at home, but two of the best performances came at home against FCS teams. Louisiana and Coastal Carolina were able to win even though they stalled.

Can Marshall score enough? Appalachian State is 5-0 when allowing 28 points or fewer and 0-4 when allowing more.

Marshall only scored more than 26 against one FBS team, Bowling Green. Appalachian State is better.

Appalachian State vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The running game has been rolling again.

When this thing works, Appalachian State starts running, keeps running, and it comes up with 200 yards with gashing runs helped with a slew of dangerous backs getting in some work.

It ran over Georgia State for over 400 yards, kept the momentum going against Robert Morris in a scrimmage last week, and now it gets a Coastal Carolina defense that’s been great overall but got hammered by Old Dominion for 320 rushing yards in a loss a few weeks ago.

The Mountaineers have to own the narrative. Coastal Carolina wins when it dominates on third downs, wins the time of possession battle in lopsided fashion, and takes over the turnover battle.

Appalachian State has the talent to win in all three of those phases.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 9

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

There are problems when Appalachian State isn’t running wild.

It’s got the ability to throw, but that’s not how this all works. The 63-61 opener against North Carolina was a crazy outlier. The other two losses this season to James Madison and Texas State came when the ground game failed to get to 100 yards. Those happened to be the only two games all year the Mountaineers turned it over multiple times.

Coastal Carolina turned it over four times against Buffalo and twice against Gardner-Webb – and won both games. It gave the ball away just three times in the other five games and has forced multiple takeaways five times.

Appalachian State will be able to run, but the Chanticleers should be balanced enough to control the game throughout, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Give Coastal Carolina credit for rebuilding quickly and coming up with a fantastic record, but it hasn’t quite dealt with the teams Appalachian State has.

From the shootout against North Carolina, to the win over Texas A&M, getting by a Troy defense that – as it turns out – is amazing, the Mountaineers have seen and done more. They should be solid as long as they don’t turn it over multiple times.
