Panthers waive 11 players on Saturday

The first wave of this weekend’s cutdown tsunami has crashed for the Panthers.

On Saturday, the Carolina Panthers began the trek towards their initial 53-man roster—waiving a total of 11 players.

Those players are as follows:

  • QB Jake Luton
  • RB Camerun Peoples
  • WR Gary Jennings
  • WR C.J. Saunders
  • OT Larnel Coleman
  • DT Antwuan Jackson
  • LB Bumper Pool
  • S Collin Duncan
  • S Josh Thomas
  • CB Rejzohn Wright
  • K Matthew Wright

The most notable name of the bunch is, perhaps, Luton. A former sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Luton completed eight of his 19 throws for 115 yards, a touchdown and an interception over two preseason outings.

But given the current state of Carolina’s quarterbacks room—with rookie Bryce Young as the starter, veteran Andy Dalton as the backup and Matt Corral barely holding on as the No. 3 option—the cut of Luton was not a surprise in the least.

He and the 10 other players who were waived by Carolina will now hit the waiver wire and can be claimed by another team on Wednesday. If they are not, they will become free agents and could return to the Panthers as part of their practice squad.

Studs and duds from Panthers’ preseason loss to Lions

Bryce Young and Adam Thielen sparked a little magic in Friday’s preseason loss to the Lions.

The Carolina Panthers capped off the preseason with their third loss in as many outings. And while there are presumably some duds in the defeat, there were some notable studs from the 26-17 result as well.

Let’s run through them all.

Eagles planning RB-by-committee approach to replacing Miles Sanders

Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni says he’s “OK with having a committee of running backs”, and says the #Eagles will roll with whatever is working

The Eagles’ 2023 NFL offseason is almost complete, and as the Birds return for training camp, they’ll look entirely different on defense, while adding explosive players to the running back position.

Philadelphia signed former Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny to replace Miles Sanders, and the hope was that he could help decrease some of Hurts’ designed runs.

They added more explosiveness at the position, trading for former Lions running back D’Andre Swift.

As the team returns to the NovaCare Complex for training camp, head coach Nick Sirianni is fine with ” a committee approach”, as well as one of the three talented players become the top dawg.

“I’m OK having a committee, I’m OK with one guy getting the carries, too,” he said in a recent interview via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “I really am. Whatever’s working, whatever’s going (well).

“We’ll say at times we’re going to go here and then a guy gets hot and we’ll roll with him. For example, Kenny in the playoffs a little bit last year. He got more touches than he had gotten because he was running it really well.

“I’m content with whatever’s working and playing the best guys. I love the depth that we have to be able to rotate guys and keep guys fresh. I like when you have a guy that can do all of it, I like when you have a guy that you can segment it. There’s so many different ways to do it.”

With report day set for Tuesday morning, here’s a look at the Eagles committee of running backs and the best and worst case scenarios for the arrangement.

Bryce Young working out with Panthers WRs (and Camerun Peoples) during break

Bryce Young and some of his Panthers teammates are spending their unofficial summer break by officially not taking much of a break.

So, how is Bryce Young spending his unofficial summer break? By not really taking a break, of course!

The Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback and a handful of his teammates were grinding away this week over at Southern Methodist University. Here are some of the scenes down from Dallas—which also feature wide receivers DJ Chark, Terrace Marshall Jr., Laviska Shenault Jr. and Adam Thielen:

Oh, and don’t forget rookie running back Camerun Peoples . . .

Young has received considerable praise from a number of his teammates this offseason—including Thielen, offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu, linebacker Brian Burns and cornerback Donte Jackson. The most recent review came from running back Miles Sanders, who said the following about the No. 1 overall pick:

“I look at him and he’s very sharp, and on it with everything. He’s there early, he leaves late,” he said on June 28th episode of The Rich Eisen Show. “His decision making is smart. He doesn’t force anything really. His pocket presence is what really stands out to me. So, again, the height doesn’t matter at all—I hope nobody’s worried about the height. But I like him, and we got a bright future ahead.”

Considering he’s hard at work with his teammates at the moment, that tracks.
