A look back at Eagles 2023 NFL free agent class

With 2024 NFL free agency set to begin in less than two weeks, we’re looking back at the Philadelphia Eagles 2023 free agent class

Coming off of their Super Bowl LVII loss to the Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles lost several starting players to free agency — C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Marcus Epps, T.J. Edwards, and Kyzir White.

Howie Roseman helped alleviate some of that loss by adding six veterans on one-year deals to help the Eagles return to the postseason in 2023.

Philadelphia started 10-1, before losing six of their final seven games including a wild card loss to the Buccaneers.

One big reason for the collapse was the lack of production from each of those veteran additions.

Kansas City repeated as Super Bowl champions, and with all the attention now focused on 2024 NFL free agency, we’re looking back at the 2023 class.

Eagles: 11 takeaways from Howie Roseman, Nick Sirianni’s end-of-season press conference

We’re looking at 11 key takeaways from the Eagles end of the season press conference with Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni

The Eagles held their annual season-ending press conferences.

Unlike the 2023 version, we’ll head into the offseason with uncertainty about the team’s identity, coaching staff, and direction on both sides of the football.

Brian Johnson and Sean Desai are out, while there are 20 pending free agents, but other than that, Philadelphia will enter the 2024 offseason with front-office continuity, draft assets, and a clear plan for improving around Jalen Hurts.

Here are 11 takeaways and notes from the presser.

2024 NFL Draft: Final compensatory pick projections for the Eagles

Philadelphia will receive a third-round compensatory pick and three fifth-round compensatory picks, according to Nick Korte of OverTheCap after losing Javon Hargrave, Isaac Seumalo, Andre Dillard and T.J. Edwards in free agency.

The Eagles made several critical signings during the 2023 NFL free agency process, with all of the additions being one-year deals.

Philadelphia GM Howie Roseman watched ten contributors leave on the open market.

Thanks to his shrewd maneuvering and roster building, the Eagles are in line for four valuable compensatory picks in 2024, according to Nick Korte of Over The Cap.

The Birds were slated to have six picks in the 2024 NFL draft, but thanks to the compensatory formula, they’ll have 10.

1 Eagles’ own pick
2 Eagles’ own pick
2 From Saints
3 Projected compensatory pick
5 From Vikings (can become fourth-round pick if conditions are met)
5 From Buccaneers
5 Projected compensatory pick
5 Projected compensatory pick
6 Eagles’ own pick, or the Titans’ sixth-round pick, whichever is better
6 Projected compensatory pick

Here’s an early look at the four compensatory picks and how Philadelphia landed the extra assets.

3 Commanders named on PFF’s Top-100 free-agents list

Three Commanders ranked among top 100 NFL free agents for 2024.

The Washington Commanders will end their miserable season in less than one week. The Dallas Cowboys come to FedEx Field needing a win to clinch the NFC East title and the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs.

Washington, meanwhile, has lost seven straight games and looks to secure the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft next week.

Under new owner Josh Harris, the Commanders will look a lot different in 2024. In addition to the draft, Washington has over $80 million in estimated cap space, according to Over the Cap. After trading defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young at the NFL trade deadline, that’s two less contracts Washington will need to worry about this offseason.

Still, the Commanders have some key free agents in 2024. Pro Football Focus recently revealed its latest top 100 free-agent list, and three Commanders were ranked.

Lions hosted Tom Kennedy for a free agent visit

Lions hosted WR Tom Kennedy for a free agent visit for the second time in six weeks

The NFL’s transaction wire was pretty quiet on the Detroit Lions front over the last few days. But Tuesday’s appearance on the league’s log raises an eyebrow.

Per the official release, the Lions hosted free-agent wide receiver Tom Kennedy for a visit. Yeah, that Tom Kennedy, the one who played for the Lions from 2019-2022 and was a fan favorite for much of his time in Detroit.

Kennedy was waived with injury status during the first week of training camp. He suffered a left arm/shoulder injury. Detroit then waived him from the I.R., which allowed him to try and come back instead of being out all year.

It’s the second time this season the Lions have checked in with Kennedy, who has not signed with any other team since the Lions waived him. After his last visit, the Lions instead opted to trade for WR Donovan Peoples-Jones to replace Marvin Jones on the roster.

After losing Marvin Jones from the receiving corps due to family matters, the Detroit Lions are at least considering bringing another ex-Lions wideout back into the den.

The Lions hosted Tom Kennedy on a visit on Wednesday, per the NFL’s transaction wire. Yes, that Tom Kennedy.

A member of the Lions from 2019-2022, Kennedy played in 20 games for the Lions over parts of those seasons. He often bounced between the practice squad and the active roster.

Kennedy was waived with injury status this summer after he suffered an arm injury in July. He was waived from the injured reserve after going unclaimed. The veteran slot receiver and one-time lacrosse player has good familiarity with the team and what the Lions might ask of him.

Kennedy was not immediately signed as of press time.

Top available free agent running backs for the Lions to consider

Top available free agent running backs for the Lions to consider with the injuries piling up at RB

The Detroit Lions running back room looked like a strength for the team entering the season. While the position group has performed well thus far, injuries have become an issue for the team.

David Montgomery has been the bellcow for Detroit’s offense, taking 94 carries over five games. He is now slated to miss some time due to a rib injury suffered in the game against Tampa Bay.

Rookie Jahmyr Gibbs has also missed some time due to injury. If he is to return soon, he should be the featured back for the Lions.

The only other running back on the active roster is Craig Reynolds, who has been serviceable in a backup role. Zonovan Knight is likely spending the rest of the season on injured reserve and Devine Ozigbo is sitting ready on the practice squad.

At this point in the season, there are not many free agent options available to choose from. Here are five players who could be brought in to help provide depth at running back for Detroit:

Former Washington wide receiver Jamison Crowder visits Commanders

The Commanders hosted Crowder on a free-agent visit.

Jamison Crowder spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the then-Washington Redskins after being selected in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft.

In his four seasons in the burgundy and gold, Crowder appeared in 56 games and recorded 221 receptions, 2,628 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also returned punts for Washington, averaging 7.9 yards per return and scored one touchdown.

Crowder signed with the New York Jets as a free agent in March 2019, where he played for three seasons. Crowder was with the Buffalo Bills in 2022. Crowder signed with the New York Giants in March but was released last week.

On Tuesday, the free-agent wide receiver visited the Commanders. Remember, Washington kept seven wide receivers on its initial 53-man roster and has two more on the practice squad.

So why did they host Crowder on a visit?

This is more of a situation where teams will bring in players to see if they are healthy in case they need to sign them at some point in the season. If injuries hit Washington, the Commanders could call Crowder and sign him, knowing he could contribute immediately.

It’s unlikely Washington hosted Crowder for punt-returning duties, as he has returned only nine punts since leaving Washington. But you never know.

7 recently cut or waived players Raiders should consider adding

Still some talent out there to be had from roster cuts. Here are 7 of them the Raiders should consider adding.

There are always a few players that teams cut who instantly stun a lot of people. Many of those players are talented enough or fit another team’s need so well, that they are scooped up quickly or claimed off waivers. But not all of them.

Some players still slip through and either remain unsigned or join a team’s practice squad.

Either way, what many refer to as the “final 53-man roster” is anything but final. A better term is “initial 53” because more moves inevitably occur afterward.

Sometimes those moves are a team seeing a player or players become available that they like better than those they kept initially. Other moves include injured players who the team expects to have back in short order, but in order to be added to the IR Designated for Return list, those players must be on the roster after the initial cuts are made.

Now that the dust has settled from the cuts, signings, and claims, I have compiled a list of those players still out there who the Raiders should consider adding this week as they prepare for the season opener.

Reported details of Teddy Bridgewater’s Lions deal leak out

Reported details of Teddy Bridgewater’s free agent deal with the Lions are now leaked out

While the Detroit Lions still have not officially signed free agent QB Teddy Bridgewater, the deal is all but done. And thanks to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, we now have a good idea of what the deal is going to look like for the veteran backup QB.

On Wednesday night, Schefter reported on social media that Bridgewater’s deal in Detroit will be for one year and a base of $2.5 million guaranteed. The report indicates that Bridgewater could earn up to $5 million. Again, the deal still is not signed; head coach Dan Campbell indicated earlier this week that the deal is not likely to happen before next week.

It’s a step back on the salary front for Bridgewater, who earned $6.5 million in Miami in 2022 to back up QB Tua Tagovailoa. Per Spotrac, Bridgewater has earned over $62 million in his NFL career, which began as a first-round pick by the Vikings back in 2014.
