Lady Vols shut out LSU to win series

Tennessee softball scores three runs in the sixth inning to clinch a series win against LSU.

No. 4 Tennessee (34-8, 14-4 SEC) defeated No. 7 LSU (35-10, 11-10 SEC), 3-0, Sunday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

The Lady Vols clinched a series win against LSU.

Sunday’s series finale was scoreless until Tennessee scored three run in the sixth inning. Giulia Koutsoyanopulos and Rylie West hit doubles in the inning, which was Tennessee’s first extra-base hit during the series.

Koutsoyanopulos went 1-for-3. She recorded one double and two RBIs, while Gabby Leach went 1-for-1. Leach recorded a pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth inning.

Karlyn Pickens (16-6) pitched six innings and earned a win for the Lady Vols. She recorded seven strikeouts and totaled 119 pitches (74 strikes).

Payton Gottshall earned her second save of the season. She pitched one inning and recorded two strikeouts.

Syracuse basketball transfer forward Alyssa Latham committed to Tennessee on Saturday.

She played one season as a freshman for the Orange during the 2023-24 campaign. Latham averaged 8.6 points, seven rebounds and 0.7 assists per game, while recording 42 blocks and 38 steals last season.

Latham scored 23 points against Alabama on Nov. 30, 2023, setting a career-high in Syracuse’s, 79-73, win against the Crimson Tide.

The 6-foot-2 forward helped guide Syracuse to a 24-8 (13-5 ACC) record last season. Syracuse advanced to the NCAA Tournament second-round. The Orange defeated Arizona during the NCAA Tournament first-round, while being eliminated by UConn in second-round play.

LSU softball shuts out Lady Vols to tie series.

No. 7 LSU (34-9, 10-9 SEC) defeated No. 4 Tennessee (33-7, 13-3 SEC), 1-0, on Saturday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. Rankings reflect the USA TODAY/NFCA Division I Coaches Poll.

LSU tied the three-game series, 1-1, after losing the series opener. The Tigers  recorded their first shutout against Tennessee since 2017 and the first in Knoxville since 2006.

The Lady Vols totaled four hits in Saturday’s contest, led by Taylor Pannell with two.

Karlyn Pickens (15-5) pitched a complete game for the Lady Vols. She recorded three strikeouts, while allowing three hits, one earned run and zero walks.

First pitch for Sunday’s series finale is slated for 2 p.m. EDT and will be televised by ESPN2.

Lady Vols tennis advances to SEC Tournament semifinals after Auburn win.

No. 17 Tennessee (18-6, 9-4 SEC) defeated No. 16 Auburn (16-10, 9-4 SEC), 4-3, on Friday in the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

The Lady Vols advance to the semifinals against No. 1 seed Georgia on Saturday at 3 p.m. EDT. The SEC Tournament is taking place at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.

“We knew this evening would be a battle against Auburn and that’s exactly what it was, right up until the last point,” Tennessee head coach Alison Ojeda said. “Our team did an amazing job at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to give us a 1-0 lead going into singles. We battled on every court, just as they did. Sofia (Cabezas) played very committed and disciplined tennis, which is why she was able to beat one of the best players in college tennis.”

No. 4 Tennessee (33-7, 13-3 SEC) defeated No. 7 LSU (34-9, 10-9 SEC), 3-0, Friday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

The Lady Vols scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three errors by LSU. Tennessee recorded three hits in the contest.

Kiki Milloy, the Lady Vols’ leadoff hitter, went 1-for-2. She was hit by a pitch and recorded one RBI and one stolen base, while Rylie West went 1-for-3 and scored one run.

Sophia Nugent and Taylor Pannell scored runs for the Lady Vols.

Payton Gottshall started for the Lady Vols and pitched 6.1 innings. She allowed two hits and recorded three strikeouts.

Karlyn Pickens recorded the last two outs and earned her first save of the 2024 season.

Jacious Sears named USTAF Athlete of the Week

Lay Vols’ senior sprinter named USTAF Athlete of the Week.

Lady Vols’ senior sprinter Jacious Sears was named USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week after her performance on April 13 at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.

Sears recorded a historic finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.77 seconds, her first individual race of the 2024 outdoor season.

Sears’ mark in the event ranks as the second fastest time in collegiate history and is 0.02 seconds behind the fastest time recorded in the 100-meter dash. The fastest time of 10.75 seconds is held by reigning world champion Sha’Carri Richardson.

Sears also broke her own school record in the event and established the world lead for 2024 by 0.17 seconds.

A native of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Sears now ranks No. 15 on the all time world list and No. 7 on the United States all time list.

She is also the first collegiate athlete to post a sub-10.800 time in the 100-meter dash.

Kim Caldwell was hired as the Lady Vols’ basketball head coach on April 7 and introduced at Tennessee on April 9.

She is the fourth Tennessee women’s basketball head coach during the NCAA era, joining Pat Summitt, Holly Warlick and Kellie Harper.

Caldwell served as Marshall’s head coach for one season during the 2023-24 campaign, compiling a 26-7 (17-1 SBC) record and advancing to the first-round of the NCAA Tournament. Marshall won the 2024 Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament championships

Caldwell also served as head coach at Glenville State in Division II from 2016-23. She compiled a 191-24 record and won the 2022 NCAA Tournament Division II championship.

Tennessee leads the all time series against the Tigers, 38-29-1.

First pitch between the Lady Vols and Tigers on Friday is slated for 6 p.m. EDT and will be televised by SEC Network.

Game No. 2 on Saturday is scheduled for noon EDT, while Sunday’s series finale will take place at 2 p.m. EDT. Both contests will be televised by ESPN2.

Ahead of the Tennessee-LSU series, Lady Vols’ head coach Karen Weekly met with media. Weekly’s series preview can be watched below.

Tennessee places first in combined attendance

Tennessee totals top combined attendance in football, men’s and women’s basketball.

Tennessee posted the highest overall attendance of any school in the country for the 2023-24 season across football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.

A total of 1,161,218 fans attended 38 events for the three sports in Knoxville. The Vols and Lady Vols outdrew LSU by more than 96,000 fans. The Tigers had 44 home events in the three sports.

South Carolina was the only other school to have one million in attendance for the three sports. The Gamecocks had 41 home events.

“The unwavering support of our fans is what makes Knoxville America’s college sports city and gives us the best fan base in all our sports,” Tennessee vice chancellor and director of athletics Danny White said. “We appreciate our fans’ passion and dedication, which powers our student-athletes to achieve their goals an d turns every home game into a truly unforgettable experience.”

Tennessee was the only school to place top 10 for attendance in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.

Kim Caldwell announces Tennessee coaching staff

Lady Vols’ head coach Kim Caldwell announces Tennessee basketball staff.

Kim Caldwell was introduced as the Lady Vols’ basketball head coach on April 9.

Caldwell announced her Tennessee assistant coaching staff on Tuesday.

Roman Tubner (former associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Alabama), Gabe Lazo (former associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Mississippi State), Jenna Burdette (former associate head coach at Marshall) and Angel Rizor (former assistant coach at Marshall) are part of Caldwell’s staff at Tennessee.

“I am very pleased to welcome our new coaching staff members to Rocky Top,” Caldwell said. “It’s an outstanding group of high-energy coaches that is gifted in the areas of recruiting, teaching, motivating, mentoring and player development. I’m so excited to get our basketball team on the court with this group and can’t wait to see what we can collectively do as a staff to help our current players and future Lady Vols become the best they can possibly be.”
