The NFL released their official 2020 schedule last night, making it official when and where each rookie Badger will make their NFL debut.

Now diving deeper, here are games to circle for Badger fans on the newly-released schedule, ones which see head-to-head matchups between Wisconsin products both young and old.

  • September 13, 2020: Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars

Wisconsin legend Jonathan Taylor begins his NFL career against the Jaguar defense and middle linebacker Joe Schobert, a Badger from 2013-2015.

  • September 20, 2020: Denver Broncos at Pittsburgh Steelers

The Broncos and their newly-signed running Melvin Gordon travel to Pittsburgh Week 2 and face T.J. Watt and the Steelers’ defensive line.

Though the two were never teammates on the field in college, it is a matchup of two former Badgers who are both premier players in the league at their position.

  • September 27, 2020: Green Bay Packers at New Orleans Saints

Right tackle Rick Wagner and the Packers travel to New Orleans in Week 3 to battle against the Saints and their rookie linebacker Zack Baun.

Baun will be used all over the field for the New Orleans defense but his most likely role will be on the edge as a pass rusher. Though the Packers somehow only have one former Badger on their roster, this matchup should see their right tackle Wagner–a Badger from 2009-2012–face off head-to-head with the rookie Baun as he works to protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

  • September 27, 2020: Las Vegas Raiders at New England Patriots

This is one of my favorite matchups to watch as the Raiders and fullback Alec Ingold look to find success in the run game against the Patriots and defensive tackle Beau Allen, a Badger from 2010-2013.

  • October 11, 2020: Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers and newly-acquired fullback Derek Watt look to open up their ground game against an Eagles defense led at linebacker by former Badger T.J. Edwards.

  • October 25, 2020: Houston Texans at Green Bay Packers

Like the Packers’ Week 3 matchup against the Saints, their October 25 contest against the Texans will see Wagner trying to block a former Badger in J.J. Watt.

  • November 30, 2020: Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles and starting middle linebacker T.J. Edwards will look to slow down the Seahawks and Wisconsin legend Russell Wilson.

  • December 6, 2020: New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks

For the second consecutive week Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson will stare down a former Badger across the line in Giants middle linebacker Ryan Connelly.

  • December 6, 2020: Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans

This is an intriguing matchup between two former Wisconsin legends in running back Jonathan Taylor and defensive end J.J. Watt.

Nobody really knows how the rookie Taylor will perform in the NFL but if his talent and college production is any indication, Watt will have his hands full when the Colts come to town in December.

  • December 10, 2020: New England Patriots at Los Angeles Rams

The Patriots and newly-signed defensive tackle Beau Allen look to get past Rams right tackle Rob Havenstein, a Badger from 2010-2014, and put pressure on quarterback Jared Goff.

  • December 27, 2020: Indianapolis Colts at Pittsburgh Steelers

The same story as the Colts’ December 6 contest in Houston, Taylor will look to finish his rookie year on a strong note as he faces the Steelers and former Badger T.J. Watt.

This list may change as the season progresses, as current depth options including Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus, Eagles running back Corey Clement, Cowboys center Tyler Biadasz, Panthers linebacker Chris Orr, Raiders cornerback Nick Nelson and others could move into starting roles and set themselves up for head-to-head matchups against fellow Wisconsin products.

Rams GM Les Snead explains the ‘Bobby Wagner Rule’ in the draft

Les Snead learned the hard way not to trade away from really good players in the draft.

Few general managers in the NFL tend to trade draft picks as much as Les Snead of the Rams does. Although he only made one deal during this year’s draft, he’s moved picks frequently in recent years, even going all the way back to his first year as the Rams’ general manager in 2012.

That year, Snead made one of his biggest trade mistakes as a GM. He traded away from linebacker Bobby Wagner, who the Rams really liked in the 2012 draft as an underrated linebacker.

The Rams moved down from No. 45 to 50 in a trade with the Bears, who moved up to select Alshon Jeffery. At No. 47 overall, the Seahawks swooped in and took Wagner, three spots ahead of the Rams.

They knew Wagner was a good player, but they probably didn’t realize just how successful he’d be in the NFL – which makes that trade sting even more for the Rams.

“The one that makes the Hall of Fame, rookie year general manager, we had multiple picks – maybe three in the second round after the Sam Bradford trade,” Snead said on a video call with season ticket holders this week. “And I know we got Janoris Jenkins in that haul in the second round, but we made a trade back like we did in this year’s fourth round to collect some more picks later in the draft and one of the players we were definitely thinking of targeting there was Bobby Wagner. And that year, Bobby didn’t go to the combine so you maybe thought he would slip a little bit farther in the draft but unfortunately, he didn’t and that’s probably going to go down as the one that got picked right in front of you that has probably hurt the most considering he did go to a division rival and is probably working to a Hall of Fame career with the Seahawks.”

And so the “Bobby Wagner Rule” was born. After missing out on Wagner, Snead has changed his view in the draft and has tried to avoid getting cute by trading down to add more picks, while potentially missing out on a player the team really likes.

“I call it the ‘Bobby Wagner Rule. There’s a lot of ways to carve a draft strategy … but the ‘Bobby Wagner Rule’ would be, if a player falls to you and you really want that human being, don’t get cute and don’t worry about those extra draft picks,” he said. “Just take that human being and the rest will take care of itself. Some of the best lessons in this business are learned the hard way.”

Wagner has gone on to have remarkable success in Seattle. He’s made six Pro Bowls, been named a first-team All-Pro five times and has only missed nine games in eight seasons – five of which were in 2014.

He’s undoubtedly one of the best linebackers of this era, and the Rams are reminded of the time they missed out on him when they see the Seahawks on their schedule twice a year.

Bills might start 2020 season with 4-straight games vs. NFC West

Buffalo Bills 2020 NFL schedule might have early NFC West games.

While speculation insists that the 2020 NFL regular season will go on as expected, it appears the league might be putting together a “break in case of emergency” segment into their scheduling.

On Thursday, the NFL will release all the schedules for every team across the league at 8 p.m. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic currently taking the country by storm, the league may set the early portion of all schedules in a certain way.

John Clayton of 710 ESPN in Seattle confirmed to USA TODAY Sports Media Group that the NFL has discussed having all teams begin the season with four out-of-conference games as a scheduling precaution in case the league has to delay the start of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Or worse, in case the league has to cross games off their schedule and shorten the season. While cross-conference games are fun, they’re of the least importance in terms of playoff seeding, so the idea is a fitting one.

If the report holds trust, this means the Bills’ schedule, when released, could have some form of the Cardinals (5-10-1 overall record in 2019), Rams (9-7), Seahawks (11-5) and defending NFC champion 49ers (13-3)… otherwise known as the NFC West, early in their slate of games.

The Bills haven’t faced the NFC West since 2016.

Johnny Hekker trolls Russell Wilson over workout video on custom field

Another example of why Johnny Hekker is one of the best follows on Twitter.

Russell Wilson is one of the highest-paid players in the NFL, earning $35 million per year on his current contract. He’s signed through 2023, too, and should remain the Seahawks’ quarterback for a long, long time.

Up to this point, Wilson has already earned a huge chunk of change after coming into the NFL as a third-round pick. His estimated career earnings, excluding endorsements and off-field income, is in the range of $109 million, according to Spotrac.

It’s enough money to allow Wilson to have his own custom field with his logo in the middle, which he showed off in a new workout video. Rams punter Johnny Hekker saw the video and noticed the receiver putting his hand up to shield the sun before every catch.

Hekker is one of the funniest Rams players on Twitter, and his tweet is all in good fun. But he does have a point. The poor receiver could barely see the ball coming at him, having to block out the sun and look through a soccer net.

Maybe Wilson will get his guy some of those fancy Bose audio sunglasses he endorses for Christmas.

3 undrafted free agents who could make Seahawks roster

These 3 undrafted free agents could make the Seahawks’ roster in 2020.
Anthony Gordon, QB, Washington State: He and Russell Wilson are the only QBs currently on the roster.
Debione Renfro, CB, Texas A&M: Has good size and speed for the Seahawks’ scheme.
Marcus Webb, DE, Troy: Undersized but has good burst off the ball

4 NFL landing spots if the Saints trade Pro Bowl guard Larry Warford

The New Orleans Saints might be shopping Pro Bowl guard Larry Warford after the 2020 NFL Draft. Teams like the Ravens should be interested.

Could the New Orleans Saints trade three-time Pro Bowl right guard Larry Warford? It’s certainly possible, especially after the Saints reinforced their interior line by picking Cesar Ruiz in the 2020 NFL Draft. The idea has been floated by both ESPN’s Bill Barnwell and The Athletic’s Sheil Kapadia, but which teams might be interested in Warford’s services? Here are a few suggestions.

Miami Dolphins

Credit: Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Miami signed Ereck Flowers in free agency to start at left guard, prompting last year’s starter Michael Deiter to slide over to the right side. He’ll be competing with in-house options like Jesse Davis, Danny Isidora, and the Ragin’ Cajuns own Robert Hunt, but none of them have the proven track record Warford boasts.

The Dolphins also have a wealth of draft capital to offer, with multiple picks in the first and second rounds (via Houston Texans), as well as rounds six (from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks) and seven (after a trade with the Atlanta Falcons).

However, there isn’t exactly a hot trader’s market for guards right now. The Saints would probably hope to acquire one of the late-round selections rather than a more valuable pick early in next year’s draft.

Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright underwent shoulder surgery

The Seahawks’ selection of Texas Tech linebacker Jordyn Brooks is starting to make more and more sense.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider confirmed veteran linebacker K. J. Wright underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason and his return for the start of the year is uncertain.
“He’s rehabbing from his surgery,” Schneider told 950 KJR’s Softy and Dick show. “I’m not sure of the timeline of when he’s going to be back.”.
Schneider didn’t provide details about Wright’s procedure or when and if he’d be available should the season start on time this year
