TEAM NEEDS

Defensive Line

It’s easy to point the Seahawks needing just an edge rusher with Jadeveon Clowney’s decision still looming, but they need defensive tackle help, too. Seattle finished 29th in sacks, 29th in quarterback hits and 26th in pressures last season.

Wide Receiver

The Seahawks hit a home run with D.K. Metcalf in last year’s draft, and while they have him along with Tyler Lockett, Seattle could afford to add a game-changing receiver to compliment them.

Offensive Tackle

With the losses of Germain Ifedi and George Fant, there is a gaping hole at right tackle. The Seahawks acquired Brandon Shell, but he only offers low-end starting value. Seattle could afford to find the successor to Duane Brown, as well.

TOP TARGETS

Marlon Davidson | DL | Auburn

Neville Gallimore | DT | Oklahoma

Brandon Aiyuk | WR | Arizona State

John Hightower | WR | Boise State

Isaiah Wilson | OT | Georgia

Lucas Niang | OT | TCU

Steve Kerr and Seattle Seahawks’ Pete Carroll debut new coaching and leadership podcast

A pair of championship coaches debut new podcast, “Flying Coach.”

With no sports being on the calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic, there’s been a burst of unique content being produced by players and coaches. We’ve seen interactive Q&A segments with fans, live H-O-R-S-E competitions and video game tournaments.

Now, it’s Steve Kerr’s turn. The Golden State Warriors coach is linking up with Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks for the “Flying Coach” podcast. Between Kerr and Carroll, the pair has combined for 11 championships from the college and professional level.

Before winning Super Bowl XLVIII over the Denver Broncos with the Seahawks, Carroll won five Pac-10 championships and two national titles as the leader of the USC Trojans.

Kerr, with eight rings of his own, will join Carroll to discuss coaching philosophies, leadership and why they became coaches. According to The Ringer, the podcast will raise money for COVID-19 relief.

5 teams, 12 trade-down draft scenarios for Cowboys, Jordan Love

It may be tough for the Cowboys to increase their overall draft capital, but in this year’s draft, more picks could be what they need.

The Dallas Cowboys don’t have the greatest amount of capital in the 2020 NFL draft, but they could stand to use some more. If things fall right, they may be in the perfect position to gain it by moving back in the first round.

In a draft like this year, where there seems to be several positions with an overabundance of talent, there may be more value contained in having your draft value spread among more Top 150 picks than previous years.

As Blogging The Boys pointed out, the Cowboys have 1,613 total points according to the standard draft value chart. That figure ranks in the middle of the pack, which is expected for picking 17th and it in line with the median from their previous 20 drafts. One way they could inch that number up would be to win more points in a trade-down scenario. That normally can happen in a seller’s market, which fluctuates at various points in the draft. This year, that could be the case for No. 17 if Utah State quarterback Jordan Love makes it to Dallas’ spot.

If there’s one thing that can set off a seller’s market, it’s coveting a quarterback. In this year’s draft most prognosticators (not all) feel there are three tiers of potential starting quarterbacks.

The first tier could all go in the Top 5 and almost assuredly in the Top 10. LSU’s Joe Burrow, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oregon’s Justin Herbert are seen as having the most ability to start right away. The third tier contains quarterbacks who have more of a risk associated with them, and that includes Georgia’s Jake Fromm, Washington’s Jacob Eason and Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts. Most see those players as Day 2 selections.

In the middle, in the second tier sits Love, a player with enough crazy upside to still be healthily considered a Round 1 prospect.

The Cowboys aren’t in the market for Love, but the three teams picking directly behind them could be.

Who Needs a QB

Most likely, sitting at No. 5, Miami will get a chance to choose the third of the top-tier QBs. Someone will probably jump ahead of them to take QB2, with Detroit advertising pick No. 3 is for sale. A team like the Chargers, who pick No. 6, seem like the obvious candidate though it could be anyone.

Teddy Bridgewater’s $21M salary doesn’t scream long-term commitment for Carolina. Jacksonville and Gardner Mishnew is a nice story, but they could be in the market to move up from No. 9. The Raiders at No. 12 and Tampa Bay at No. 13 remain possibilities, as do the New England Patriots who would likely have to sacrifice a lot to move that high.

But if any team jumps them, Miami may be left with the remaining quarterback and it shouldn’t be assumed they love that player enough to select them at No. 5.

In a scenario where the third quarterback gets past Miami because they take an elite prospect at another position, then that player likely doesn’t escape the Top 13.

And if that plays out, then Miami, sitting at No. 18, could be in line to make that choice for Love. And if that’s the case, then the team sitting one spot ahead of them is in prime position to hold a bit of a bidding auction.

Miami at No. 18, Las Vegas at No. 19 and Jacksonville at No. 20 could all be perfect landing spots for Love, provided none of these teams used their first first-round pick on a QB.

Brandon Beane says Greg Olsen was not ‘win-win’ fit

Earlier this offseason the Bills hosted veteran tight end Greg Olsen on a free agent visit. He ended up signing with the Seattle Seahawks instead.

Earlier this offseason the Bills hosted veteran tight end Greg Olsen on a free agent visit. He ended up signing with the Seattle Seahawks instead.

Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane gave some insight into why Olsen, who he is familiar with from their time together with the Carolina Panthers, didn’t sign on the dotted line with his team. Chatting with the team’s radio partner WGR-550 on Monday, Beane said things didn’t add up for both sides.

“It had to be a win-win, a fit for all of us and in the end it wasn’t,” Beane said.

Olsen, 35, is a 14-year veteran of the NFL, playing with the Panthers since 2011. Since taking over operations in Buffalo, Beane hasn’t been shy about bringing in veteran talent. Running back Frank Gore last offseason is an example of that.

What Beane could be referencing in his response is the price tag. Olsen eventually latched on with the Seahawks via a one-year deal worth $7 million with $5.5 million guaranteed money.

Olsen also told the Seahawks website that Russell Wilson also made a difference in his decision.

“It was just too good of an opportunity to pass up,” Olsen said. “Their track record of success, consistency of winning. I’ve played in this city many times, and just the fanbase, the excitement, that stadium is one of the more unique venues in all of sports. And obviously Coach (Pete) Carroll, playing with somebody like Russell (Wilson), it just checks so many boxes I was looking for.”

But with Olsen’s potential addition, does that mean the Bills aren’t settled with their tight end position? Beane said that’s not the case. Rather, he was just doing his due diligence.

“It doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t look at… if there’s a guy out there that we should investigate, we can bring him in, and that’s at every position, not just tight end,” Beane said. “At the end of the day, we’re very comfortable (at tight end).”

Dawson Knox is currently the Bills’ No. 1 tight end. Behind him is a bit of a mix of players that could be the No. 2. From the sounds of it, Beane is hopeful that Tyler Kroft, who restructured his contract this offseason, emerges about the rest of the pack if he’s able to stay healthy.

“(Kroft) will hopefully be able to get back to the player that he was a couple years ago and then Lee Smith bring a veteran presence. Tommy Sweeney, when he had an opportunity, he did  make some plays for us. Again, I felt comfortable with where we’re at,” Beane said.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Russell Wilson worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Russell Wilson is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP?

He’s surprisingly never received a single vote for MVP in his NFL career, but Wilson remains one of the best quarterbacks in the league. The success he’s had with Seattle is bound to continue in 2020 as the team looks like Super Bowl contenders once again. We’ll take a look at whether Wilson can actually take home the NFL MVP based on past history and future projections.

Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Wilson is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

A quarterback has won NFL MVP in each of the last seven seasons, which is a positive trend for Wilson. The Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson did it last year as a dual-threat player, rushing for 1,206 yards and leading the NFL with 36 touchdown passes. The Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes had 5,097 passing yards with 50 touchdowns in 2018 when he won the award, while Tom Brady’s 4,577 passing yards and 32 TDs for the New England Patriots led to him winning MVP in 2017.

Wilson will need to throw for at least 4,500 yards and toss no fewer than 30 touchdowns if he wants to win MVP in 2020, a combination he’s never had in his career.

Russell Wilson’s 2020 NFL MVP odds

Wilson is +500 to win the 2020 MVP, just behind the favorite Mahomes (+325). Seattle’s Wilson is also +500 as the these three are far ahead of the competition. The next-closest player is New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees  at +1400.

Russell Wilson’s stats

Wilson had one of his best seasons in the NFL last year, throwing for 4,110 yards, 31 touchdowns and a career-low five interceptions. He also took a league-high 48 sacks, so he’ll need help from his O-line in 2020 if he wants to win MVP.

Is Russell Wilson worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

The Seahawks play in arguably the toughest division in football with the Los Angeles Rams, Arizona Cardinals and the NFC defending champion San Francisco 49ers all on the schedule twice. If Seattle can win 11 games going through that gauntlet in 2020, it’ll greatly help Wilson’s chances, especially if he’s clutch late in games.

Wilson has all the tools to win MVP and plays the most important position in football, which makes him a good bet. At +500, he may not have the upside of someone like Carson Wentz (+2000), but Wilson is deservingly one of the favorites to win the award.

Celebration Time – Happy Birthday to Three Former Notre Dame Stars

Everyone might be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day but if you played football at Notre Dame, your birthday is celebrated two days later.

Everyone might be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day but if you played football at Notre Dame, your birthday is celebrated two days later.

OK, that’s not actually the case but it’s a pretty celebratory day for three Notre Dame football legends as Julian Love (22), Quenton Nelson (24) and Rick Mirer (50) all celebrate birthdays today.

Since all three were great and created countless memories with their highlight-worthy play while at Notre Dame, let’s celebrate the three today.

Seattle Seahawks agree to terms with free agent DE Bruce Irvin

The Seattle Seahawks used the first official day of free agency to shore up their depleted pass rush and to reunite with an old friend.
Irvin racked up 8.5 sacks and 19 quarterback hits with the Panthers in 2019, immediately making him the Seahawks most formidable pass rusher.

Bills expected to sign DE Quinton Jefferson

The Buffalo Bills are attacking their defensive line this free agency period, adding their second edge defender in Quinton Jefferson.

The Buffalo Bills are attacking their defensive line this free agency period, adding their second edge defender in Quinton Jefferson.

The Bills are signing him to a two-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Financial terms of the deal have yet to be released.

Earlier in free agency, the Bills lost edge rusher Shaq Lawson to the Dolphins. But the Bills already added one reinforcement via Mario Addison, a former Panthers player under Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott.

Coming from the Seahawks, Jefferson, 26,  played along a 3-4 front defensive end spot at times, but could be used in a 4-3 tackle position, such as the Bills’ 3-tech spot. If Jordan Phillips departs, there’s certainly a spot there for Jefferson. But without Lawson now as well, the Bills can use him in a variety of ways.

In 39 career games played, Jefferson has 7.5 sacks, 5 passes defended and 10 tackles for loss. Early in his career, things were derailed for him by injury but in recent seasons, the former fifth-round pick has turned it around. Jefferson has 6.5 sacks combined over the past two seasons and he’s shown a good ability to beat double teams, winning 10.9 percent of those.

5 possible trade destinations for Yannick Ngakoue

The Jacksonville Jaguars franchise-tagged Yannick Ngakoue but there’s a strong possibility he gets traded to one of these teams.

(Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports)

Yannick Ngakoue was franchised by the Jacksonville Jaguars even though the player and team don’t seem to be getting along. Ngakoue even tweeted out a goodbye to the fans of Jacksonville. That didn’t stop the Jaguars from slapping the franchise tag on the defensive end.

If Ngakoue isn’t staying put and the Jaguars are franchising him with their current cap situation it means a trade is coming. Last year we saw three edge players get the tag and then get traded. Jadeveon Clowney, Dee Ford, and Frank Clark all ended up playing somewhere else. Ngakoue is just as good as the guys mentioned above. He has a Pro-Bowl and 37.5 sacks in four years. He’ll be 25 by the time the next season starts and is only entering his prime.

Let’s try and figure out where Ngakoue could end up.
