WATCH: Four-star OT Savion Byrd commits to Oklahoma, throws horns down

Watch four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd commit to Oklahoma and throw the horns down in the process. He committed to OU on Wednesday.

Wednesday marks the beginning of the early signing period and thus many college football recruits can now officially sign on the dotted line with their school.

Oklahoma has had many of their previously committed recruits sign throughout the day, but they are also waiting on the commitment announcement of several others in the coming days.

One guy the Sooners were hoping to land today is four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd out of Duncanville, Texas. Lincoln Riley and staff got their guy, as Byrd announced his commitment to Oklahoma this morning throwing up the ‘Horns Down’ in the process.

Byrd had also received offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, LSU, SMU and Texas. But he has elected to come to Norman to learn under Sooners offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh.

This is a big land for Oklahoma and he has already started to win Sooners fans over with his post-announcement celebration.

Oklahoma lands early signing period commitment from four-star OT Savion Byrd

Oklahoma came through in the end. The Sooners had been in the mix for four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd for a long time and it helped.

Oklahoma came through in the end.

The Sooners had been in the mix for four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd for a long time. The Duncanville, Texas, prospect is one of the best offensive tackles in the entire 2021 recruiting class.

Byrd visited Oklahoma on numerous occasions, but the most important visit came when he joined Caleb Williams for a trip to Norman, Oklahoma, for the Sooner Summit. There has been a ton of momentum for the Sooners ever since the visit.

But SMU came on strong. They were a school amongst other elite schools vying for the top offensive tackle. Byrd had hats of LSU, Oklahoma and SMU on his table when he made his decision moments ago.

He picked up the Sooners hat and put it on.

Byrd is considered the 114th best recruit in the 2021 recruiting class, the 16th best offensive tackle and 17th best player in the state of Texas according to Rivals. He becomes Oklahoma’s second offensive line commitment in this class with Cullen Montgomery signing early Wednesday morning.

The Sooners will surely hope he isn’t their last commitment before this class is over. Five-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh and five-star offensive guard Bryce Foster are still set to reveal their commitments at a later date.

Oklahoma now has 16 commitments in the 2021 recruiting class and are up to No. 12 in the Rivals team rankings. Here is what it is left for the Sooners in this class.

Oklahoma football recruiting: 4-star OT, OU target Savion Byrd sets commitment date

The long wait maybe over. Savion Byrd was rumored to be on track to commit to Oklahoma in Aug.. Now, he’ll reveal his college choice on NSD.

The long wait maybe over.

There was strong buzz coming out of the Sooner Summit in Aug. that a big commitment from one of the best recruits in the country could be coming. Savion Byrd has since let off that and will announce his college choice four months later.

The four-star offensive tackle spent that weekend alongside Caleb Williams and a handful of other top Oklahoma targets. The Sooners have been the reported leaders for Byrd since, even with a visit weekend spent at LSU with LSU commitments.

Now, the highly touted recruit will make his college decision official on National Signing Day on Dec. 16, he announced last week.

Oklahoma made his final five on Nov. 13 alongside Texas, Auburn, LSU and SMU.

Byrd is considered the 84th best prospect in the 2021 recruiting class according to Rivals. He is the 15th best offensive tackle and 14th overall recruit in the 2021 recruiting class.

Five-star offensive guard target Bryce Foster announced last week, too, that he would be revealing his commitment on Dec. 18.

Oklahoma currently has 15 commitments in the 2021 recruiting class and has the 14th overall ranked recruiting class.

Texas Football Recruiting: Five 2021 prospects the Longhorns need to push for next

Despite the recent success, the 2021 class has still not been good enough from Herman. Here are five recruits Texas should push for next:

To some surprise, recruiting in the 2021 class has been good for Tom Herman and the Texas Longhorns. Beginning with Terrence Cooks, Texas was able to secure his commitment over schools such as Baylor, LSU, and Georgia. A four-star outside linebacker, Cooks and Morice Blackwell will lock down the position for Chris Ash in the near future.

More recently, the Longhorns were able to flip defensive tackle Byron Murphy II out of DeSoto, Texas. Originally committed to Baylor, after Texas offered the four-star prospect, the recruitment suddenly changed. Much needed help across the defensive line is on its way with Murphy.

Despite the recent success, the 2021 class has still not been good enough from Herman. Losing out on major players such as the Brockermeyer brothers and seeing Jalen Milroe flip to Alabama, Texas has lost its top prospects throughout the entire cycle.

As Joel Klatt of FOX Sports mentioned, the Longhorns have “lost that luster in the state.” Other schools such as Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M have stolen recruits from Texas.

That “certainly wasn’t the case when Mack [Brown] was winning a lot of games” said Klatt.

Herman still has the opportunity to flip all of that around with a couple of top in-state prospects still available. The Aggies and the Sooners are in these races as well, making them even more important for the coaching staff to win.

Here are the five 2021 recruits Texas should push for next:

4-star offensive tackle has Auburn in top five schools

The 4-star offensive tackle from Duncanville, Texas lists Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, SMU and Texas as his top five schools.

Auburn has had the last two weeks off but that hasn’t kept the coaches from doing some recruiting.

On Saturday, 4-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd released his top five schools and Auburn made the cut along with LSU, Oklahoma, SMU and Texas.

From Longhorns Wire:

Byrd also has experience playing defensive tackle, primarily playing there during his junior season. Duncanville finished as runner ups in the 6A-DI playoffs.

An announcement date has not yet been announced by Byrd. It will be a highly contested battle between some major programs.

Byrd’s scouting report from 247Sports:

Possesses outstanding build for projected offensive tackle role. Good height and appears to be long. Wears his weight well and is built athletically relative to size with ample space for more bulk. Shows quickness at the snap and flashes impressive functional athleticism that allows for second-level work with relative ease. Looks for more work downfield when available. Very high ceiling in pass pro thanks to frame and natural movement ability. However, lacks reps at projected position after spending entire junior year playing defensive tackle. Still projects very well to OT but has not spent significant time there since sophomore season. Hand placement can get better. Must continue to bulk and strengthen. Can improve footwork technique. One of the top tackle prospects in a loaded 2021 O-line class in Texas. Possesses early-round NFL Draft potential with proper development.

Auburn has three offensive lineman committed for the 2021 class including 4-star Jaeden Roberts, 4-star Caleb Johnson and 3-star Garner Langio.

Four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd releases top five schools

Savion Byrd released a top-five school list consisting of Auburn, LSU, SMU, OU, and Texas. Herb Hand will need a late push to land Byrd.

Since losing the Brockermeyer brothers to Alabama, offensive line coach Herb Hand has been searching for replacements. It has been a struggle for Texas, losing out on lower-rated players to schools such as Baylor and Stanford.

Savion Byrd is a player who could turn that around for the Longhorns. A four-star on the 247Sports composite, Byrd is the No. 6 offensive tackle in the country. He released a top-five school list on Friday night consisting of Auburn, LSU, SMU, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The Mustangs and Sooners seem to have the upper hand in Byrd’s recruitment at the moment. Hand and the Longhorns have been pushing for the Duncanville High School product for quite some time now but has never emerged as a favorite to land him.

Hayden Connor is the only other member of Texas’ 2021 class that is projected to play offensive tackle. In what has been a horrific recruiting cycle for Tom Herman, landing Byrd would be a significant accomplishment and possibly rejuvenate the class.

Byrd also has experience playing defensive tackle, primarily playing there during his junior season. Duncanville finished as runner ups in the 6A-DI playoffs.

An announcement date has not yet been announced by Byrd. It will be a highly contested battle between some major programs.

Oklahoma makes top-5 for 4-star 2021 offensive tackle Savion Byrd

Oklahoma is down the final stretch to secure its 2021 recruiting class and is hoping for a bunch of good news left on the recruiting trail.

Oklahoma is down the final stretch to secure its 2021 recruiting class and is hoping for a bunch of good news left on the recruiting trail.

One of those could be Duncanville, Texas, product Savion Byrd. The four-star offensive tackle visited the Sooners for the visit weekend Caleb Williams put together back in August.

He has since gone a bit quiet, but Byrd dropped his final five schools late Friday night.

Oklahoma is among a final group of Texas, Auburn, LSU and SMU. The Sooners have trended towards the top of his recruitment since Byrd visited Norman, Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma City metro area.

He is rated as the 84th best player in the country, the 15th best player in the state of Texas and the 14th best offensive tackle in the 2021 recruiting class according to Rivals.

The Sooners’ 2021 recruiting class currently ranks 14th in the country with just 15 total commits—the fewest amount of commitments for a class inside the top-20.

Four Crystal Ball predictions going against Texas

As well as UT has been recruiting these past years, they are not able to sign everyone. Here are four players predicted to commit elsewhere.

As well as Texas has been recruiting these past few years, the Longhorns are not able to sign everyone. There are plenty of schools from across the country interested in the talent pool here in the state of Texas.

Right now, the main competition for Texas’ prospects is Texas A&M and Oklahoma. Not only are they the Longhorns’ biggest rivals on the field, but the three schools are constantly recruiting the same guys year in and year out.

Currently, there are four big-time in-state players Texas is considered to be a top choice for. However, 247Sports’ crystal ball is predicting for them to pick elsewhere. To land their commitment, Tom Herman will have to make a late fall push and steal away from their rivals.

Here are the four players predicted to go against the Longhorns on 247Sports’ crystal ball:

Georgia football among top schools for 4-star OT

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the top schools for four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd, who is a top 50 overall prospect.

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the top schools for four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd. Byrd is top fifty overall prospect and is widely considered top ten overall player at his position.

Byrd plays football for Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas. Current Missouri signee Ennis Rakestraw, a three-star CB, also played at Duncanville. He was a late riser in the class of 2020.

Byrd released his top schools via Twitter:

Byrd includes UGA, SMU, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Ohio State, Oregon, Florida, FSU, TCU, Auburn, Miami, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M in his lengthy list of top schools. We’ll let you know if the Dawgs make his top five.

At 6-5, 293 pounds, Byrd has great size. He’s received immense recruiting attention and is projected to join the SMU Mustangs. SMU is the only non-power five school to make Byrd’s top 14.

Don’t be shocked if Byrd commits soon. We’ve seen a lot of players committing to schools earlier this season. Will commits stay true to their commitments? There will always be some last minute flips.
