Four-star WR, Aeryn Hampton, choosing between Alabama and Texas

Alabama listed as one of two finalists for four-star WR Aeryn Hampton

Four-star wide receiver, Aeryn Hampton, a native of Carthage, TX has narrowed down his recruitment to Alabama and Texas. Hampton is a top-200 player in the 2024 class and is listed as the No. 9 athlete in the class, however, I expect him to be a receiver at the next level.

Hampton had previously committed to Baylor on Dec. 8, 2021, before de-committing a month later. Then from February 2022 to November 2022, he was committed to the Longhorns before re-opening his recruitment process again.

Michigan, LSU and Oklahoma are among other notable schools that have offered Hampton. However, all signs indicate that the Tide currently leads the race for his commitment.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Hampton’s recruitment.

LOOK: 2023 four-star DE Terrance Green enjoying his Texas visit

Defenive line coach Bo Davis is focused on signing another impressive haul in 2023.

One of the state of Texas’ best defensive line prospects made his way to Austin for an unofficial visit over the weekend.

Four-star defensive end Terrance Green is rated the No. 49 defensive lineman in the country for the 2023 recruiting class and the No. 55 overall recruit in the Lone Star State in 247Sports composite rankings. He has an impressive offer list including the likes of Auburn, Baylor, Florida, Texas, USC and over 20 others.

Green racked up 40 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries in his junior season for Cy Woods High School. His 6-foot-5 projectable frame suits Green well for the collegiate level.

Defensive line coach Bo Davis is focused on signing another impressive haul in 2023. Landing a high-ceiling prospect like Green would go a long way towards strengthening the defensive front.

Top 10 offensive recruits Texas has signed in the last five years

The highest rated offensive players Texas has signed since 2018.

Recruiting is one of the most important aspects of college football. Steve Sarkisian is off to a great start to his Texas tenure in the recruiting department after signing the No. 5 ranked class in the 2022 cycle.

Texas has a strong history of attracting major talent to its program. The Longhorns consistently finish inside the the top 10 despite not having tons of success on the field as of late.

Sarkisian’s recruiting pitch includes playing in an offensive system that has put many players in the NFL, the incoming move to the SEC, potential for lucrative NIL deals and much more.

While vital for a team’s success, recruiting is an impossible science to figure out. Every year some highly ranked prospects fan out and some underrated players shine.

Here is a look at the top 10 rated offensive recruits Texas has signed in the past five years. Transfers are not included on this list.

Texas receives a crystal ball prediction for four-star OL Jaydon Chatman

Texas’ offensive line recruiting momentum is carrying over to the 2023 cycle.

It appears the late recruiting momentum Texas used to build its excellent 2022 offensive line class is carrying over to the 2023 cycle.

247Sports’ Mike Roach put in a crystal ball projection for Texas to land talented four-star offensive guard Jaydon Chatmon. Chatman is rated inside the top 300 in the nation and the No. 42 overall player in the state of Texas in 247Sports’ composite rankings.

The Harker Heights product received all-district honors as a junior in 2021. Chatman is now picking up lots of attention from schools across the county, adding recent offers from the likes of Alabama, Tennessee, Baylor and LSU.

Texas is looking to put together back-to-back elite recruiting classes on the offensive line after signing seven big-time prospects in 2022. Kyle Flood is changing the outlook of Texas’ offensive line for years to come.

Report: Four-star RB Rueben Owens to visit Texas on back-to-back weekends

Texas may have both Arch Manning and Rueben Owens on campus at the same time.

One of Texas’ biggest targets in the class of 2023 is set to visit campus on back-to-back weekends during spring practice.

On3Sports’ Gerry Hamilton reports four-star running back Rueben Owens will check out the program over the last weekend of March and the first weekend of April.

Owens is a former Texas commit, but the Longhorns are still very much in the thick of his recruitment. He has expressed interest in playing with five-star quarterback Arch Manning, who is also expected on campus the final weekend of March.

The El Campo product was named 2021 MaxPreps National Junior of the year after rushing for close to 3,000 yards and scoring 46 total touchdowns. One of the most dominant seasons from a running back in recent Texas High School Football memory.

Texas is looking to build some early momentum in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Texas offers four-star EDGE Desmond Umeozulu from Maryland

Desmond is the cousin of Texas offensive line signee Neto Umeozulu and top 2024 target Zina Umeozulu.

Texas went to the east coast to offer 2023 four-star edge rusher Desmond Umeozulu on Monday afternoon.

That last name should sound familiar to Longhorn fans. Desmond is the cousin of Texas offensive line signee Neto Umeozulu and top 2024 target Zina Umeozulu.

247Sports composite ranks Desmond as the No. 4 player in the state of Maryland and a top 300 prospect nationally.

Colleges all over the country love his upside as a player. He has picked up over 33 offers from big name programs such as Georgia, Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State and now Texas.

Umeozulu has a very projectable 6-foot-6, 230-pound frame that should play well at the next level. He helped lead C.H. Flowers High School to an impressive 11-2 season and a state semifinal appearance in his junior year.

Check out Umezulu’s full junior season highlight tape here:

Four-star S Mikal Harrison-Pilot set to visit Texas on Friday

Texas will host one of the state’s best defensive backs this Friday.

The 2023 recruiting cycle is heating up. Texas hosted a large group of recruits for their junior day event last weekend and will have more talented prospects visit again this week.

Four-star safety Mikal Harrison-Pilot announced via Twitter he will make the trip to Texas on Friday.

247Sports composite ranks Harrison-Pilot as the No. 18 prospect in Texas and No. 102 overall. He has 46 total offers from the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Baylor and many others.

Harrison-Pilot is one of the most versatile athletes in the 2023 recruiting class. He was named first-team all-district in high school while playing quarterback, wide receiver and safety. He has the skillset to potentially play both sides of the ball at the next level.

The Temple product will check out a couple of other Big 12 schools this weekend. He will see Sonny Dykes at TCU Saturday, then he will stop in Waco to visit Baylor.

Texas DL signee Jaray Bledsoe will enroll early for spring semester

Bledsoe will join a strong group of newcomers joining the Texas program.

Big news for the Longhorns as Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas reports four-star defensive lineman Jaray Bledsoe has been admitted into the university and will enroll early at Texas.

Bledsoe will join offseason workouts with the team as soon as possible.

The Marlin, Texas product will join an impressive list of newcomers enrolling for the spring semester. Getting to campus early is huge for the development of younger players, especially if they want to contribute early on.

247Sports rated Bledsoe as the No. 25 player in Texas and just outside of the top 150 nationally. He chose Texas over the likes of Alabama, Texas A&M and Baylor.

The opportunity for early playing time will be available for Bledsoe or any of the other freshmen in Texas’ defensive line class. The Horns failed to get consistent pressure from its defensive front in 2021.

Sooners cornerback Latrell McCutchin enters transfer portal after one season

Oklahoma Sooners cornerback Latrell McCutchin has entered the transfer portal.

It’s probably been said a million times in the last month and a half but it bears repeating once more: The portal giveth and the portal taketh away.

That’s the phrase of this offseason more than years past as the Sooners lose yet another player to the transfer portal. This time it comes from a somewhat unexpected place in the form of cornerback Latrell McCutchin.

While there is no confirmed reason as to why McCutchin entered the portal, based on his post he highlights recent staff changes as one of the reasons he decided to enter.

Roy Manning has been off the staff for a while now and it was pretty well known via social media that most of the players weren’t the biggest fans of his. A possible other explanantion would be that McCutchin and his family may not mesh well with incoming Sooners cornerbacks coach in Jay Valai.

Valai was on the staff at Texas when McCutchin was being recruited out of high school in Austin, Texas. He bypassed Texas and Alabama as well to come to Norman. It’s not for sure but considering how anti-Texas McCutchin was during his recruitment it may be the hint that Valai and McCutchin never mixed thus prompting McCutchin to head for the portal before giving Valai another shot.

In his single season, McCutchin posted some really good PFF coverage grades but also had his fair share of rough moments, which were to be expected of a true freshmen cornerback. McCutchin becomes one of the highes rated corners in the transfer portal and opens the door even wider for the Sooners to look to the portal for defensive backs.

The Sooners currently have D.J. Graham, Woodi Washingon, Joshua Eaton, Billy Bowman, Kendall Dennis, and swiss army knife Key Lawrence as possible cornerback options right now.

On the recruiting trail, Gentry Williams and Jayden Rowe are their lone cornerback commits in the 2022 recruiting class and McCutchin’s departure opens the door for them to get on the field early in their Sooners’ careers.

Texas lands commitment from four-star safety Larry Turner-Gooden

BOOM! Texas adds another key piece to their 2022 class.

Longhorns fans who tuned in to NBC for the All-American Bowl were treated to some good news on Saturday as Larry Turner-Gooden announced his commitment to Texas.

The four-star safety chose Texas over the likes of USC, Colorado, Missouri, Maryland and Penn State.

247Sports composite ranks Turner-Gooden as the No. 15 safety in the country and No. 13 player from Calif.

National recruiting analyst Greg Biggins gave Turner-Gooden a 2-3 round NFL draft projection in his scouting report:

Plays a physical game with an edge in his game. Has good cover skills and ball awareness and is always around the football. Shows good football instincts and is tough in run support. Has a strong body and has filled out and added size in his upper body over the last year. He shows both short area quickness and has good long speed as well. He’s an excellent return man and should be able to return punts and kicks at the college level. Plays very hard with a consistent motor and has a strong will to win.

Turner-Gooden joins Bryan Allen and Austin Jordan to make up Texas’ talented trio of safeties in the 2022 class. He has already signed with the Horns and will enroll early for the spring semester.
