SMU Mustangs provide first test of 2023 season the Oklahoma Sooners

There are only a few teams on the Oklahoma Sooners’ schedule who will look more different than the SMU Mustangs in 2023

In our next preview of Oklahoma opponents for the upcoming season, we take a look at SMU.

There are only a few teams on the Sooners’ schedule who will look more different than the Mustangs.

They rank 117th in returning production according to ESPN (ESPN+). They return 56% of their offensive production, which ranks 101st, and 48% of their defensive production, which ranks 112th.

SMU has had a high-powered offense the last few years, but a big part of that was head coach Sonny Dykes, who left for TCU in the 2022 offseason, and [autotag]Tanner Mordecai[/autotag]. Mordecai, of course, transferred this offseason to the Wisconsin Badgers to be the quarterback for their new head coach Luke Fickell.

Instead, Preston Stone will most likely be the new signal caller. Stone played in six games last season and threw for 388 yards, completing 58.3% of his passes, with two touchdowns and one interception.

So, not a lot of experience at quarterback. The Mustangs also bring back all three of their leading rushers: Tyler Lavine, Velton Gardner and [autotag]Camar Wheaton[/autotag]. Wheaton was a highly touted recruit who played for the Alabama Crimson Tide before transferring to SMU. Though he hasn’t put it all together yet, the talent is there.

The Mustangs also add Miami Hurricanes transfer Jaylan Knighton to the group. This will definitely be the strength of the offense.

They, like the Sooners, are replacing their top wide out, 1,000-yard receiver Rashee Rice. Rice had more than 1,300 yards and had 10 touchdowns last season. He was taken in the second round of the [autotag]NFL draft[/autotag].

They added a highly touted transfer from the TCU Horned Frogs, Jordan Hudson, to hopefully pick up some of that slack.

So, while SMU finished 14th last season in total offense, just one spot behind the Sooners, it is losing much of that production. Most importantly, its quarterback. The Mustangs didn’t really lean on their running game much a year ago, so that aspect of their offense is still unproven.

They liked to throw it around the lot, finishing 65th in rushing. That’s why we could see a very different offense this season from the Mustangs.

Defensively, they are losing a great deal, but they weren’t a very good defensive team to begin with. They finished 112th in total defense last season. They were 73rd in pass defense and 120th in rush defense.

The Sooners should have substantial success running the football in this game. They really shouldn’t have much of an issue throwing it, either.

Ultimately, this is a game that should provide the first test to see how far this team has come. If its defensive line gets bullied in the run game, it’s going to be a long season. Offensively, if it can’t get separation or bully the SMU defense in the running game, there are red flags on that side of the ball.

But if they make the progress I think they should make and will make, they should pass the first test of the season rather easily.

Score Prediction: 48-13 Oklahoma

Predicted Record: 2-0

Former Alabama 5-star RB Camar Wheaton announces transfer destination

The former 5-star RB has found a new home after spending one season with the Crimson Tide.

Former Alabama running back Camar Wheaton entered the transfer portal less than a month after the Crimson Tide’s season came to an end in the loss to Georgia for a national title. Today, Wheaton has announced where he will continue playing.

Wheaton, in a picture shared to Twitter, will play at SMU.

A five-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, Wheaton chose the Crimson Tide over Georgia, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State and others.

He did not record any stats in his true freshman season while at Alabama, but he was a name that intrigued many for later seasons.

Alabama’s running back room still has depth and plenty of names to get fans excited, with Georgia Tech transfer [autotag]Jahmyr Gibbs[/autotag] leading the way.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to share updates regarding Alabama Football leading up to the 2022 college football season.

Updated look at the top available players in the transfer portal

There’s many talented players still available in the transfer portal, and the list will likely grow after spring ball.

Although spring football is coming to a close over the next two weeks, there are hundreds of players still looking for a new home via the transfer portal. Continue reading “Updated look at the top available players in the transfer portal”

Top available college football transfer portal running backs

Top available college football transfer portal running backs #GoBucks

I apologize for the delay, I know everyone has been loving my transfer portal rankings, but this past week I was busy diving headfirst into the new United States Football League and its draft, but I am back and ready to dive into the next positional group.

Last time here, we broke down the top five available wide receivers and it was an exciting group, but the running backs are just as intriguing. With the departure of Master Teague, there may be an open spot, but TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams will make it hard for anyone to crack the line-up.

Ohio State is currently in a scholarship quandary, with too many that’ll have to be rectified somehow, but if the coaching staff can figure it out, maybe there are some running backs to look at in the portal.

Here are the top five running back in the transfer portal in this 2022 offseason of college football.

With TreVonte Citizen signing with Miami, could LSU pursue Camar Wheaton?

Could Brian Kelly look at a transfer running back at missing on multiple backs in the 2022 class?

Going into National Signing Day the LSU Tigers had their eyes on one of the best recruits in the state of Louisiana, TreVonte’ Citizen.

Many Tiger fans were watching as Citizen proceed to do multiple fakeouts where he put on four different hats (Auburn, Miami, Florida, and LSU) before throwing them all down and choosing Miami. With Citizen now out of the picture for head coach Brian Kelly, what’s the plan?

News broke out of Tuscaloosa on Tuesday that former five-star running back Camar Wheaton has entered the transfer portal. Camar Wheaton was a member of the 2021 recruiting class.

He was the No. 3 running back in the nation, the No. 6 player in Texas, and the No. 34 player in the country according to 247sports. Wheaton played at Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland, Texas, where he finished his career with a rushing total of 3,731 yards and 48 touchdowns.

He signed with Alabama out of high school and enrolled early for the 2021 season. Wheaton went to Alabama and was viewed as a player who would get a lot of playing time, but that was cut short by a meniscus injury in practice that sidelined him for the full season. He wound up redshirting for the Crimson Tide.

“Camar Wheaton got injured in practice, and he was a really good young player that people don’t know about yet,” said Saban during an early-September radio show “… He was a real speedster and really a guy that could have probably been helpful to us this year, as well.”

LSU came into national signing day looking for a running back. While Wheaton wasn’t the target, to begin with, he wouldn’t be a bad guy to end up with.

Former Oklahoma target and five-star RB Camar Wheaton enters the transfer portal

Former Oklahoma and five-star running back from the 2021 recruiting class Camar Wheaton entered the transfer portal on Monday.

The Oklahoma Sooners went toe-to-toe with the Alabama Crimson Tide for former five-star running back Camar Wheaton. Wheaton ultimately chose to go to Alabama, but the Sooners were in his final two heading into decision day. Well, it looks like he’s looking to relocate from Tuscaloosa as Wheaton entered the transfer portal yesterday.

Wheaton was heavily recruited by DeMarco Murray and the Sooners could get back in on the five-star running back. However, with Eric Gray, Marcus Major, Jovantae Barnes, and Gavin Sawchuk already on the depth chart, the room could be a bit full for either side to pursue.

Wheaton could follow Caleb Williams, Mario Williams, and Lincoln Riley to USC. As a part of that 2021 recruiting class, his connection to the two former Sooners and the former Sooners head coach could sway him to find a new home on the west coast.

The Texas native was the No. 3 running back in the 2021 recruiting class according to 247Sport composite and the No. 34 player in the nation.

Brent Venables has and his staff have been strategic with the transfer portal as they look to add depth on both sides of the ball. On offense, they’ve added Dillon Gabriel, Daniel Parker Jr., McKade Mettauer, and Tyler Guyton. Could they look to add a talented playmaker to an already stacked backfield ahead of the 2022 season? It’ll be a portal recruitment worth tracking.

REPORT: Former 5-star RB Camar Wheaton unlikely to return to Alabama

The talented back is not likely to return to Alabama

Reports have begun to surface that former five-star running back prospect Camar Wheaton is no longer enrolled at Alabama and is unlikely to return to the Crimson Tide. The reason for Wheaton’s departure has not yet been released.

Wheaton was regarded as one of the top backs in the country when he signed with the Tide as a part of the 2021 class.

Due to a knee injury, Wheaton did not see any action as a true freshman in Tuscaloosa. Head coach Nick Saban last provided an update on Wheaton back in November. “Camar Wheaton’s still rehabbing,” Saban said. “He’s not on the field yet. He’s got a ways to go.”

Chris Hummer of 247Sports was the first to report on the news.

Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for all the latest on the Crimson Tide!

Alabama Football: 5 position groups to watch this spring

Alabama Football: 5 position groups to watch this spring

Although Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide were not able to claim a national championship this past season, the 2021 team still accomplished quite a bit.

The Tide won the SEC Championship and finished with an impressive 13-2 record and Bryce Young became the first Alabama quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.

Now that the season has come to an end, let’s shift our focus to spring practice and which position groups Alabama fans should be watching when the Tide returns to practice in a couple of months.

A look at Alabama’s potentially loaded backfield in 2022

My goodness, this would be a loaded backfield!

Last Wednesday on early signing day, Nick Saban and Alabama reeled in a pair of top-notched running backs in Emmanuel Henderson and Jamarion Miller.

Alabama wasn’t finished either. On Tuesday afternoon talented Georgia Tech running back transfer Jahmyr Gibbs announced that he was taking his talents to Tuscaloosa too.

Brian Robinson Jr. is the only back that we know for certain will not return to Alabama in 2022.

With that being said, the 2022 running back room for the Tide is flat-out loaded with talent.

Here is what the depth chart could potentially look like heading into next season.
