Big 12 Predictions: New additions open conference play with big tests

New Big 12 additions face stiff challenges in a full week of conference action. Here are this week’s Big 12 predictions.

It was a rough go for the Big 12 last week. Iowa State lost to Ohio, Kansas State lost to Missouri, Cincinnati lost to Miami (OH.), and Oklahoma State lost to South Alabama.

The conference did pick up big wins, with BYU beating Arkansas and West Virginia taking down Pitt in the Backyard Brawl.

TCU got the first conference win of the season when they beat Houston. This week, three of the new Big 12 squads face significant tests, with Cincinnati hosting Oklahoma, BYU traveling to face Kansas, and UCF in Manhattan to take on Kansas State.

We’ll find out a lot more about the Big 12 and how each team stacks up after this weekend.

Here are this week’s Big 12 predictions.

Week 3: 8-5

2023 Overall: 29-12

Danny Stutsman named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week in win over SMU

After an incredible performance against the SMU Mustangs Oklahoma Sooners linebacker Danny Stutsman earned the Walter Camp National Player of the Week Award.

The Oklahoma Sooners put together a strong defensive performance on Saturday evening against and SMU team that hadn’t been held to 11 points or fewer since the end of the 2017 season.

Making his mark on the game all night long was junior linebacker Danny Stutsman. Stutsman, who led the Big 12 in tackles in 2022, is off to another blistering start in the 2023 season. In the Sooners 28-11 win over SMU, he logged 17 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a quarterback hit, and recovered Key Lawrence’s forced fumble.

Stutsman earned the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week award for his efforts.

It’s the first time a Sooners defender has won the award since Kenneth Murray did in 2018, and marks the 11th time it’s gone to Oklahoma since 2004.

On a night when the Sooners offense seemed to take a conservative approach, Danny Stutsman and the defense played a great game to shut down a promising SMU Mustangs offense. In Brent Venables words, Stutsman was “all over the field.”

At the heart of Oklahoma’s defensive development is Danny Stutsman. And as Stutsman goes, so will the Oklahoma Sooners defense.

Here’s a look at the best photos from the Oklahoma Sooners 28-11 win over the SMU Mustangs.

Updated look at how the ESPN matchup predictor projects Oklahoma’s remaining schedule

The Oklahoma Sooners win projections moved in a positive direction in an updated look at the ESPN matchup predictor after week one’s win.

The Oklahoma Sooners’ 73-0 win over the Arkansas State Red Wolves was eye-opening. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Red Wolves or the Texas A&M Aggies, anytime you score 70 or more points and shut out your opponent, it’s kind of a big deal.

Now this game will not win Oklahoma a Big 12 title or put it in the national title conversation, but it’s a strong step in the right direction in Year 2 of Brent Venables.

ESPN analytics took note of the Sooners’ week one dominance in their updated win projections for the 2023 season in their matchup predictor.

The ESPN matchup predictor runs thousands of simulations with data derived from recent results on the field and recruiting.

Now that ESPN has Week 1 data to plug into the simulations, the results have become even more favorable. Let’s take a look at how the ESPN matchup predictor sees the rest of Oklahoma’s schedule playing out.

ESPN matchup predictor on the Oklahoma Sooners 2023 season

How does ESPN’s Matchup Predictor think the Sooners 2023 season is going to go?

College football is almost here. All the offseason talk will give way to seeing what these teams can do on the football field. The Oklahoma Sooners are a team with a lot to prove heading into the 2023 season.

And mostly to themselves. What they put on the field a year ago isn’t a good representation of what Oklahoma Football is about or what Brent Venables’ defense is about. And that’s the beauty of college football. What happened last year matters little as we look ahead.

Nobody expected TCU to go on a run to the national championship game. Nobody expected Baylor to fall back to the pack. And certainly, nobody expected Oklahoma to have their first losing season since 1998.

And that provides as much optimism as anything for the 2023 Oklahoma Sooners. Last year’s results don’t matter anymore. They have a chance to write a new chapter in one of the most storied programs in college football history.

ESPN’s matchup predictor, which runs thousands of simulations, is a believer in a return to Big 12 prominence in 2023. Let’s take a look at how they see the Sooners’ season playing out.

ESPN’s matchup predictor projects the Oklahoma Sooners 2023 season

ESPN’s matchup predictor suggests the Oklahoma Sooners will be one of the best teams in the Big 12 in 2023.

Though the 2023 season is still months away, we’re getting an early look at what some of the national observers think about the Oklahoma Sooners in their final season in the Big 12.

Last week we took a look at College Football News schedule prediction for the Oklahoma Sooners and yesterday, it was ESPN’s win projections for the Big 12 after the Football Power Index update.

With the FPI update, let’s take a look at the win probabilities for the Oklahoma Sooners from ESPN’s matchup predictor.

Things are looking pretty optimistic.

Oklahoma Sooners way too early game-by-game predictions for 2023

Way too early game-by-game predictions for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2023.

No schedule is perfect. In a 14-team conference, there will be something that somebody or some school doesn’t like about the schedule. That’s true for Oklahoma. However, on paper, the 2023 schedule looks favorable for the Sooners.

They do not have to face Kansas State or an improving Texas Tech team. They don’t have to deal with Baylor, which has beaten them twice in a row. Road trips to Cincinnati and Provo aren’t ideal, and neither is the short week to face TCU. Again, scheduling isn’t a perfect world.

With the schedule out, let’s look at what the Sooners could do in 2023 with this way-too-early game-by-game prediction.

Wisconsin officially lands SMU tranfer QB Tanner Mordecai

The Badgers have their next quarterback

After multiple reports of SMU transfer quarterback Tanner Mordecai linked to Wisconsin, the Badgers have officially landed the senior transfer.

Mordecai made things official on Twitter earlier Friday afternoon.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Southern Methodist University, faculty, staff, and football program,” said Mordecai on Friday.

“After conversations with Coach Fickell and Coach Longo, I am excited to announce I will utilize my last year of eligibility at the University of Wisconsin.”

Mordecai immediately becomes the expected 2023 starter in a quarterback room that also includes Oklahoma transfer Nick Evers.

Mordecai had 7,152 passing yards with a staggering 72 touchdowns and 22 interceptions over a pair of seasons as SMU’s starting quarterback. He began his career as an Oklahoma Sooner, where the former four-star recruit spent three seasons as a backup before transferring to SMU.

Here is a look at his complete statement:

Former Oklahoma commit, four-star WR Jordan Hudson expected to visit Texas

After decommitting from OU, Texas and SMU were seen as the favorites to land Jordan Hudson. Reports state the WR is expected to visit both.

Rarely does Lincoln Riley ever lose out on offensive talent. Especially wide receivers from the state of Texas. For once, the Oklahoma head coach seems to have missed on an elite offensive prospect.

Four-star Jordan Hudson had been committed to the Sooners for nearly a whole year. He decided to decommit on Monday afternoon, reopening his recruitment to the rest of the country.

Texas and SMU were immediately seen as the favorites to land Hudson. With visits now allowed, both schools have been pushing to get the wide receiver on campus.

Being from Garland, the Mustangs could have an easier time convincing Hudson to make a short drive to University Park. Steve Sarkisian and Andre Coleman have had to do some convincing.

It seems as if Hudson is listening and will be making his way down to Austin soon. According to multiple reports, the wide receiver will head to the Forty Acres to listen to what the Longhorns have to offer.

Hudson even tweeted out himself the possibility of a visit.

Wide receiver is a major priority for Texas in the 2022 class and Hudson should be near the top of their board. Armani Winfield is already on board, while Evan Stewart and Brenen Thompson’s speed separate them as must-get prospects. But, Hudson has been likened with current Dallas Cowboy CeeDee Lamb.

If you remember anything about the 2019 Red River Shootout, having a CeeDee Lamb type player in a Sarkisian offense would not exactly be the worst thing in the world.

Two crystal balls have already been inserted for the Ponies. When Texas ends up hosting Hudson, they will be playing catch up.

On the 247Sports composite, Hudson is the No. 14 wide receiver and the No. 114 player in the country. Within the state of Texas, he sneaks inside the top 25 at No. 23.

SMU Mustangs College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense keeps on rolling. Head coach Sonny Dykes and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley found the groove last year with the attack averaging close to 500 yards and 39 points per game. There’s balance, consistency, and enough explosion keep things moving in a variety of ways.

Eight starters are back, but two are gone off the offensive line and QB Shane Buechele has to be replaced. Neither area is much of a concern, with the quarterback situation full of strong options.

Preston Stone was a huge recruit who might push for the gig right away, sophomore Derek Green is coming off a strong spring, and Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai could take the job and run away with it. It’s a good situation, but it’ll take a little more time.

The receiving corps is terrific. All-star tight end Kylen Granson is done, but the Mustangs are bringing in three outstanding options in the transfer portal, starting with Grant Calcaterra who caught 41 passes and scored nine times at Oklahoma.

The top three wide receivers are back, led by top target Rashee Rice coming off a 48-catch season, and with Reggie Roberson averaging close to 22 yards per grab.

The passing game might be splashy, but the running backs put up huge numbers in this attack. Ulysses Bentley has 1,000-yard back potential and should push for double-digit touchdowns again – he ran for 11 last season – but he won’t carry the load alone with Tre Siggers coming in from North Texas.

They’ll all work behind a decent offensive line that knows how to get the job done. It’s not going to blast away, but the group of veterans – all five starters are expected to be back – know how to work within the system. Tackle Jaylon Thomas and guard Hayden Howerton are two of the best in the American Athletic Conference.
