CFP rankings revealed ahead of LSU vs Georgia

The College Football playoff rankings have been revealed ahead of Georgia football’s SEC Championship Game vs LSU.

This weekend, it’s win and you’re in for Georgia.

The Dawgs, which remained the highest ranked one-loss team in the College Football Playoff rankings since the first reveal of the season, held onto that spot as we enter conference championship weekend.

This Saturday, it will be No. 4 Georgia vs No. 2 LSU in Atlanta.

Much of the reason for Georgia’s high ranking has to due with who the Bulldogs have beaten. That includes three top-15 wins over Florida (9), Auburn (11) and Notre Dame (15).

Here is the full top-15:

1. Ohio State

2. LSU

3. Clemson

4. Georgia

5. Utah

6. Oklahoma

7. Baylor

8. Wisconsin

9. Florida

10. Penn State

11. Auburn

12. Alabama

13. Oregon

14. Michigan

15. Notre Dame

How Georgia, LSU stack up ahead of SECCG: Statistical breakdown

How Georgia and LSU stack up statistically ahead of the SEC Championship Game, which is college football’s biggest of the weekend.

The big one is here.

On Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on CBS, Georgia and LSU will square off in the SEC Championship Game in what will be a College Football Playoff play-in game for Georgia.

Flor LSU, the Tigers can probably afford to drop this one given their undefeated record and body of work to date.

But for the Dawgs, this is it. It’s win or go home. We suffered defeat in the exact same scenario last season and Kirby Smart will put out all the tricks to make sure that does not happen.

Georgia and LSU are two very different football teams.

LSU’s offense is incredible. Georgia’s, well, is not.

Georgia’s defense is equally as good as LSU’s offense. LSU’s defense is nothing special.

How this game plays out will be fun to watch. LSU will score points, less points than usual I would assume. Can Georgia hang in there and match them?

Here are how these two teams match up statistically.

Amway Coaches Poll: Notre Dame Moves Up

It doesn’t ultimately matter in terms of ending the 31 year drought of winning a national championship but Notre Dame’s resumes stacked up next to a few teams ahead of it is interesting.

Following their 45-24 win at Stanford, Notre Dame moved up in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll Powered by USA Today.

Just who then did they pass?

Well, to some Fighting Irish fans delight they moved past that team that embarrassed them on national television at the end of October.

The latest Amway Coaches Poll:

1. LSU

2. Ohio State

3. Clemson

4. Georgia

5. Utah

6. Oklahoma

7. Florida

8. Baylor

9. Alabama

10. Wisconsin

11. Penn State

12. Auburn

13. Oregon

14. Notre Dame

15. Minnesota

16. Memphis

17. Boise State

18. Michigan

19. Iowa

20. Appalachian State

21. Cincinnati

22. Virginia

23. Navy

24. Southern Cal

25. Air Force

Dropped out: Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech

Realistically we could see Oregon and Wisconsin both lose next weekend, both having tough matchups in their respective conference championship games. If they both lose we could see Notre Dame move into the top-12 at the conclusion of the regular season.

It doesn’t ultimately matter in terms of ending the 31 year drought of winning a national championship but Notre Dame’s resumes stacked up next to a few teams ahead of it is interesting.

Many reputation vs. actual production discussions to be had. We will discuss as the week goes on.

College GameDay has announced its location for conference championship weekend.

ESPN’s flagship college football preview show will be headed to Atlanta for the biggest game of the season between Georgia and LSU.

Assuming the Playoff Committee does not do anything crazy, it will be No. 2 vs No. 4 and a play-in game for the Georgia Bulldogs.

This will be the first time these two teams have met in the SEC Championship since they played in 2011.

Georgia lost the game 42-10 and was completely overwhelmed in the second half by the Tigers secondary that included Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu. If you remember, though, Georgia actually dominated the first half and should have went into halftime with a two touchdown lead. The Dawgs dropped an easy touchdown pass and the Honey Badger returned a punt for a touchdown that he actually dropped before crossing the goal line.

Georgia and LSU met most recently in 2018, when the Dawgs travelled to Baton Rouge and got completely demolished by the Tigers in a hostile environment.

This time, nobody is giving Georgia a chance. However, if we can control the clock by running on LSU’s average defense and keep Joe Burrow and the offense off the field, I like our chances.

Texas A&M Aggies Twitter reacts to getting the doors blown off by LSU 50-7

It seems like just yesterday that the LSU Tigers barely scraped by the Texas Longhorns 45-38 in the second game of the season. Fast forward to this Saturday night and LSU is facing off against one of the other Texas teams, but this time it was no contest. The Texas A&M Aggies just got absolutely demolished by LSU 50-7 in a game that was so uncompetitive it would have been boring to watch if not for all the Twitter reactions. The Aggies put up a whopping 169 total yards and one score on the Tigers’ defense after Sam Ehlinger and Co. went for 530 yards and 38 points.

Enjoy diving into the salt mine.

Yes, thank goodness!

Ohio State jumps LSU for top spot in College Football Playoff rankings

Ohio State has taken this week’s top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings, sending LSU to No. 2

There’s a new No. 1 in college football.

In the latest rankings for the College Football Playoff released Tuesday night, Ohio State has leapfrogged LSU for the top spot following Saturday’s convincing win over Penn State.

Chase Young, the consensus top prospect in the 2020 NFL draft class, was instrumental in the Buckeyes’ big win, dominating the Nittany Lions all game long.

LSU is two weeks removed from taking down Alabama, but they drop to No. 2 in the latest rankings, followed by Clemson and Georgia.

While the Tigers drop to No. 2, they’re still undefeated, and led by Joe Burrow, the top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft class.

The Crimson Tide come in at No. 5, while Utah grabs the No. 6 spot, taking advantage of an upset loss by Pac-12 rival Oregon last week.

Georgia football injury report ahead of UGA vs Tech game

Take a look at Georgia footballs injury status prior to UGA’s final game of their regular season before LSU at Georgia Tech.

Georgia defeated the Texas A&M Aggies this Saturday in a cold and rainy matchup by a final score of 19-13.  A win is a win, but man wouldn’t it be nice to close some teams out strong?

The Dawgs didn’t look bad in the first half, nearly covering the 13-point spread they were given prior to the game. It was the 2nd half that made Bulldog fans scratch their heads.

The Aggies outscored Georgia 10-6 in the 2nd half.  That is a pretty bad look for a No. 4 team, but give credit to a hard-fought, Jimbo Fisher coached team.

Now the Dawgs have just one more opponent left before facing LSU in the SEC Championship game, and that is Georgia Tech.

With LSU looming, the Dawgs will look to be as healthy as possible for that game.

Here is a look at the injured Bulldogs heading into week 14 at Tech.

Full injury report:

Probable: DB Eric Stokes

Stokes left the Texas A&M game just before halftime after he got a little dinged up on a hit.  Kirby Smart did not seem concerned about the matter.  Expect Stokes to be ready to go.

Probable: DB Tyson Campbell

Campbell has been playing through a toe injury for the past couple of weeks but is cleared to play against Tech.

Probable: OL Cade Mays

Mays has been nursing an ankle injury since the Missouri game.  He dressed against A&M but was very limited, as is expected next week in order to save him for LSU.

Questionable: WR Trey Blount

Blount is listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury.

Questionable: WR Lawrence Cager

Cager has been battling a left shoulder injury nearly the entire season.  Even missing a number of games, Cager is still the Dawgs leader in receptions and receiving yards.  Expect Cager to get minimal time if any to rest him up for the SEC Championship game vs LSU.

OUT: WR Tommy Bush

Bush has been recovering from a sports hernia and will likely be out for the year.

OUT: DT Tramel Walthour

Walthour is battling a lower-body injury and has no timetable for his return.

OUT: OL Owen Condon

Condon has been battling a lower-body injury all year and Saturday was seen in a sling.  Should likely be out for season.

OUT: OL Justin Shaffer

Shaffer was in a neck brace for the A&M game and has no timetable for his return.

OUT: QB D’Wan Mathis

Freshman quarterback D’wan Mathis is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst from his brain this offseason.  There is no current timetable for Mathis’ return.

Top five teams hold steady in Amway Coaches Poll

Not much change at the top of the polls this week.

College football’s penultimate week offered little drama at the top of the polls.

LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia and Alabama remain the top five teams in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY.

Of the top five teams Ohio State and Georgia were the only ones to have some drama, with the Buckeyes beating former No. 9 Penn State by 11 and Georgia squeezing by then-No. 24 Texas A&M. As is tradition in the SEC, many top teams took the week off with FCS opponents and Clemson had a bye.

Oregon was the big dropper this week, falling from No. 6 to No. 13 after a loss at unranked Arizona State.

In the Big Ten, Ohio State is trailed by No. 9 Minnesota, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Penn State, No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 20 Iowa.

After a 40-7 drubbing of Boston College on Senior Day, Notre Dame moved to 9-2 on the season with only Stanford remaining next weekend.

With only Oregon and Penn State losing ahead of the Irish, was it enough to move them up from the No. 15 spot they sat in last week?  The latest Amway Coaches Poll Powered by USA Today is out and your answer is unfortunately, no.

Latest Amway Coaches Poll:

  1. LSU
  2. Ohio State
  3. Clemson
  4. Georgia
  5. Alabama
  6. Utah
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Florida
  9. Minnesota
  10. Baylor

  12. Penn State
  13. Oregon
  14. Wisconsin

  19. Boise State
  20. Iowa
  21. Oklahoma State
  22. Appalachian State
  23. Virginia Tech
  24. Navy
  25. Southern California

What might be the biggest takeaways here for Notre Dame isn’t that they didn’t move from 15, but that Virginia Tech, Navy and Southern California all are now ranked.

If that holds true with the College Football Playoff Committee who releases their rankings Tuesday night, Notre Dame having three wins over top 25 teams may be enough on the resume to lift them from their No. 16 ranking.
