Rutgers football: Transfer portal defensive tackle Anthony Johnson gets offered

Rutgers football offers Anthony Johnson out of the transfer portal.

Youngstown State defensive tackle Anthony Johnson pulled in an offer from Rutgers football on Tuesday. Johnson is racking up Power Five offers after an impressive season in the MAC.

He has one year of eligibility left.

A 6-foot-3, 295-pound interior defensive lineman, Johnson is coming off a season where he had 22 total tackles and four sacks along with a fumble recovery.

In early September at Ohio State during a non-conference game, he had two total tackles as Youngstown State lost 35-7.

Since entering the transfer portal this week, Johnson has been offered by a wide range of programs including Illinois, Memphis, Michigan State, SMU and Wisconsin among others.

Last year in the transfer portal, Rutgers nabbed a defensive tackle in Isaiah Iton from Ole Miss.

With a similar build (6-foot-3, 290 pounds) to Johnson, Iton came to Rutgers because of his relationship with defensive line coach Marquise Watson. In search of playing time, Iton found plenty of that in the Big Ten.

He put together a lot of quality film during his one season at Rutgers, going for 33 total tackles and half-a-sack as well as fumble recovery and a pass defended.

[lawrence-related id=32136,29112]

Iton’s best game of the season came against Ohio State, where he had five total tackles. Rutgers took a 9-7 lead into halftime against the Buckeyes, who at that time were the top-ranked team in the nation.

Ohio State offensive player-by-player PFF grades for Youngstown State game

We look at the PFF grades for Ohio State on the offensive side of the ball in the Youngstown State game. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team had its first home game of the season when it faced Youngstown State and came away with a 35-7 victory.

A shaky offensive performance last week against Indiana left many fans dissatisfied with the unit. This week’s performance also left many fans unsatisfied even though the Buckeyes won comfortably. Many expected more offensive production considering the opponent.

The Buckeyes scored touchdowns on five of their nine drives; Kyle McCord led six drives and Devin Brown led three. McCord likely solidified himself as the starter: He looked very confident and in control of the offense.

We break down each offensive position group’s performance using Pro Football Focus grades for players. While PFF grades aren’t the end all be all, they are a great tool to break down individual players’ performances.

See former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel’s custom sweater vest

Great to see “The Senator” roaming the Ohio State sidelines once again #GoBucks

It was a homecoming of sorts for [autotag]Jim Tressel[/autotag] and the [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] team.

The national-championship-winning former Buckeye head coach is also the former president of [autotag]Youngstown State,[/autotag] and with the Penguins traveling to Columbus to face Tressel’s former team, he had to do something special.

On of his nicknames was “The Sweater Vest,” and Tressel did not disappoint on Saturday with his attire. He wore a custom Ohio State and Youngstown State version of his classic look, still showing that he still has love for the Buckeyes.

If you ask me, Tressel should have been named the next president over [autotag]Walter Carter Jr.[/autotag], but that is now a moot point. Regardless, the Sweater vest was once again roaming the Ohio State sidelines and it was great to see.

Here’s another look at it.

Ryan Day reflects on Indiana, previews matchup with Youngstown State

Watch what Ryan Day had to say in reflecting on the game at Indiana and in previewing Youngstown State Saturday. #GoBucks

Game No. 1 is in the books for Ohio State, and most fans are wondering why the Buckeyes’ offense struggled so mightily against an Indiana team that has been one of the worst in the Big Ten over the last couple of years.

And it wasn’t just the fans. Head coach Ryan Day also expressed the need for growth when it comes to the execution and production from the side of the ball responsible for moving the chains and scoring points. Still, it was a win, and the defense at least was impressive, surrendering just 153 total yards and three points.

Day held his weekly press conference on Tuesday to reflect on the contest with Indiana, and to also provide a status of the team and what’s next in store with in-state opponent Youngstown State on Saturday.

In case you missed any of his press conference, we’re sharing it with you thanks to the Ohio State Buckeyes Facebook page. In it, you can hear Day discuss how impressed he was with the defense, what the plan is at quarterback on Saturday, other rotations, and where he thinks OSU can get better in the future.

Report: Notre Dame losing assistant coach to Youngstown State

All the best to him down the road!

Notre Dame is losing an assistant coach, this one being Jeremy Larkin.  According to Football Scoop, Larkin is headed to Youngstown State to coach running backs.  Larkin was a full-time assistant on Marcus Freeman’s staff this past season as he worked as an analyst, high school relations, and helped in recruiting.

Larkin is a former Northwestern running back who previously worked as a graduate assistant on Pat Fitzgerald’s staff in Evanston.  As the former running back now goes to coach his own running backs group he does so having worked closely with one of the best of those, Notre Dame running backs coach [autotag]Deland McCullough[/autotag].

Larkin rushed for 849 yards and 10 touchdowns between 2017 and 2018 at Northwestern.

Four more Ohio State football start times and channels released

You can start your fall planning #GoBucks

The [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] football season is fast approaching, and the start times and TV channels for four more games were released on Wednesday.

You can begin to make your fall plans, at least for these Saturdays. None of the games will be in prime time. Also, none of the games that were released were against ranked opponents.

The start times for Notre Dame, Michigan State and Michigan had been released previously, meaning more than half of the games have an announced kickoff time. Some we will not know until a later date, however, find out below which games now are officially scheduled and which channel they’ll be available on.

Browns in attendance for Youngstown State pro day

Could the Browns add the Youngstown State product?

College pro days continue with the 2023 NFL Draft taking place at the end of next month and the Cleveland Browns were in attendance at Youngstown State’s recent workouts. The team could look to add some depth at running back with D’Ernest Johnson’s departure and Kareem Hunt expected to leave as well in free agency.

Youngstown State’s Jaleel McLaughlin is a very intriguing prospect who had an impressive outing at the pro day. McLaughlin is an explosive runner with the speed to hit the home run and he showed that by running a 4.44 40-yard dash to go with some impressive agility drills.

McLaughlin also showed some nice straight getting 17 reps of 225 on the bench press. He is the type of player that you bet on traits on day three of the draft with some fun tape and the potential to turn into a good depth piece in the NFL.

Next up a quarterback for Ohio State: Part 3: The conclusion

How it could play out in about 8 months #GoBucks

We are finally here, the last of a three-part series looking at which candidate, [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] or [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag], has the leg up in the race to be [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag]’s quarterback in 2023.

I will reiterate I don’t believe this contest will be called early. Given the fairly easy early schedule ([autotag]Indiana[/autotag],  [autotag]Youngstown State[/autotag] and [autotag]Western Kentucky[/autotag]), this battle potentially could go into the season. If it does, [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] needs to make a choice before traveling to South Bend.

Part 1 of this series focused on McCord. The second focused on Brown. Now we will put that information together and handicap the race. My final takes on each of them and a prediction prior to spring practices and fall camp of what we will see in 2023 for Ohio State at quarterback.

Notre Dame on pace for worst conference season in program history

This is a conference season to remember for all the wrong reasons, and it could sink lower.

After decades of independence, Notre Dame joined the Big East for the 1995-96 season. It proved to be an adjustment as the Irish went 4-14 during their first conference schedule. That was as bad as it got in conference play until the 2018-19 Irish stumbled to a 3-15 ACC record. Now, only four years later, the Irish are on pace for something even more putrid.

Through eight ACC games, or 40% of the conference schedule, the Irish are 1-7, and they earned that lone win by the skin of their teeth. If this pace keeps up, they’ll finish 3-17, which would give the program its worst conference winning percentage ever at .150. Given that a second game with Georgia Tech and one with Louisville, the only teams you objectively can say are as bad, if not worse than the Irish, remain on the schedule, that’s not out of the question.

The eye test should have seen this coming. Except for the win over Michigan State, no nonconference win looked particularly impressive. Sure, the Irish had a few double-digit wins sprinkled in there, but the season began with single-digit victories at home against blue-blood opponents Radford and Youngstown State, followed soon after by a one-point home win against the almighty Lipscomb. Perhaps those raised flags, but how many actually believed it?

As the losses pile up, so do the calls for [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] to retire or be fired. Frankly, you can’t blame Irish fans for wanting either one. His “get old, stay old” philosophy for this season has backfired. Having a bunch of veteran players fresh off two NCAA Tournament wins and a highly-touted recruit in [autotag]JJ Starling[/autotag] should have worked, but everything that could go wrong has.

The worst part is this is happening with the knowledge that the Irish are going to have a lot of unproven talent in next year’s rotation. Except for Starling and [autotag]Ven-Allen Lubin[/autotag], no underclassman has played nearly enough for fans to say they’re excited for the 2023-24 season. With the window of opportunity not stretching beyond this season, this was the last chance for success for this group. Instead, it’s going out with a whimper.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what needs to happen to label the rest of the season a success. Right now, just avoiding the standing for program conference futility is the most reasonable. That speaks volumes and specifically means a disappointing tempering of expectations. However, there’s not much else you can do when it’s become almost certain that this year’s Irish will not play beyond the ACC Tournament.

Kentucky vs Youngstown State Game Preview

Why Youngstown State Will Win

The Penguins have been terrific so far.

After a rough three-win 2021, they came out 2-0 with the offense kicking in and the defense coming up big with lots and lots of plays in the backfield. The run defense hasn’t allowed a thing, giving up just 1.8 yards per carry helped by all of those tackles for loss.

Kentucky can’t get the ground game going with Chris Rodriguez out of the mix for a bit. Struggling against the Florida defense last week was one thing, but only managing 50 yards on 26 carries against Miami University wasn’t okay.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Kentucky Will Win

Youngstown State is doing just about everything right so far, but it’s not controlling the clock.

Kentucky doesn’t really deal with the time of possession side of things, but it’s great at owning the tempo and making teams slow things down.

The Wildcat defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown pass, shut down Anthony Richardson, and it should be solid enough to keep Demeatric Crenshaw and the Youngstown State passing attack from getting comfortable.

Rely on the D, expect Will Levis and the UK passing game to keep the mistakes to a minimum, and expect the game to grind on the way it likes.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This is dangerous.

Kentucky has a style and way of staying in the game against everyone, and it has a style and a way of keeping the other side in games, too.

UT Chattanooga scared the stuff out of the base last year in a 28-23 UK win, and Youngstown State has the ability to make this a fight.

The Wildcats are going to win, and it’s not like they’re going to look ahead to deal with Northern Illinois, but they’ll have a tough time getting through this after the fun of taking down the Gators.
