Paul Finebaum on Georgia-Florida: ‘Very dangerous game for Kirby Smart’

Paul Finebaum discusses the Georgia-Florida game and how there is a lot of pressure on UGA football HC Kirby Smart to win it.

It’s Georgia-Florida day, and the No. 5 ranked Dawgs are looking to make it four in a row over the No. 8 Gators in Jacksonville.

For both sides, this is an SEC Championship play-in game. The loser of this matchup will have two losses on its record.

Georgia, though favored and ranked higher, is actually viewed as an underdog in the eyes of many for this one. A lackluster offense and a banged up defense have created a lot of doubt about UGA’s chances of winning.

While on ESPN’s First Take this week, Paul Finebaum discussed the challenges that UGA and Kirby Smart face for the Cocktail Party, in addition to speaking on Georgia’s unfortunate quarterback situation.

“This is a precarious game for Georgia,” Finebaum said. “They’ve only lost to Alabama, they led at halftime, got blown out in the second half. They had an uninspiring game last week against Kentucky, only scoring 14 points. And if they lose this game, there are going to be a lot of people who go back into the history books of two years ago and start asking the question to Kirby Smart, ‘How did you let Justin Fields get away?’”

We know the story. Fields transferred to Ohio State after one year at Georgia. Now he’s a Heisman contender. Then Jamie Newman transferred to Georgia from Wake Forest, but we never got to see him in red and black as he opted out in the preseason.

Now, it’s all on Stetson Bennett’s shoulders. A former JUCO star, Bennett has struggled during the 2020 season, and he’ll need to clean it up today and limit turnovers if UGA wants to keep with Florida’s offense.

“They’re severely challenged,” Finebaum said. “And as I say that, Florida has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Kyle Trask. … So this is a very dangerous game for Kirby Smart.”

Former Georgia receiver Malcolm Mitchell joined me this week on our podcast UGA Football Live with J.C. Shelton to talk about his life after hanging up his football cleats in early 2019.

The former Patriots wideout went from catching passes and winning Super Bowls with Tom Brady, to full-time author and CEO of his own youth literacy foundation Read With Malcolm.

“I am a full-time author and CEO of my youth literacy foundation and that’s what consumes the majority of my time, Malcolm told me on Wednesday. “It’s a little different that running down the field and catching passes, but I enjoy it.

Mitchell developed an interest with books and reading during his career in Athens and even published his first book “The Magician’s Hat” during his junior year.

“(Georgia) That’s where my curiosity really reached its peak in terms of being exposed of all the different cultures that college exposes you to and then just wanting to learn more, Mitchell continued. I found reading to be a very very useful tool in expanding as a person and it consumed me and I just read as much as I could.”

Mitchell’s foundation hosts its annual READBowl global reading competition beginning in January, something that Mitchell started four years ago.

“It’s really fun, we’ve had every state participate, we’ve had other countries participate and it’s an opportunity for reading to me sport and classmates are able to compete to see who can read the most minutes.”

What Florida media is saying about Georgia ahead of epic matchup

It’s No. 5 Georgia vs. No. 8 Florida this Saturday in Jacksonville. Here’s what Florida media is saying about Georgia.

It’s No. 5 Georgia vs. No. 8 Florida in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party in Jacksonville.

The game is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on CBS and will feature Florida star quarterback Kyle Trask and a hot Gator offense vs. the Bulldogs who boast one of the best defenses in the nation, but is missing star safety Richard LeCounte after a motorcycle accident has him out for this week’s game.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett looks to bounce back from a 2 interception performance vs. Kentucky and he will have to help produce points as Trask and Florida star tight end Kyle Pitts have been clicking this season.

The duo has connected for seven touchdowns already and the Bulldogs will have to shut that down if they want to come away from a win in this one.

Here’s what Florida media is saying about Georgia ahead of Saturday’s matchup.

Behind Enemy Lines with UGA Wire: Defense, running game and predictions – by Tyler Nettuno, Gators Wire

“The only way Georgia wins this game is if it dominates on the ground, chews up clock and keeps Kyle Trask off the field as much as possible. Florida’s defense is suspect, so UGA should be able to use the ground game and be successful. Keep in mind that Georgia has one of the best pass rushes in the country, and the top ranked in the SEC. I’m interested to see how Trask responds under pressure.”

Andreu’s Analysis: Gators have a chance to make  a statement – by Robbie Andrue, gatorsports.com

“On defense, the Gators aren’t going to stuff the run, but they’ve got to slow it down and get off the field on third down. If they don’t, Georgia’s offense is going to be on the field all afternoon — and Florida’s is not.”

Defense finding the right spots midseason – by Christian Ortega, aligator.org

The Gators’ goals are limiting Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s ability to rush at the point of attack and stop playmakers from getting the ball in space, Grantham said. He hopes to take away Georgia’s diversity on offense and limit its dimensions.

Matchup predictor: Georgia has a 63.7% chance to win, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.

Series history: Currently the Bulldogs lead the overall series 53-43-2 over Florida.

Georgia has won the last three, with the last Florida victory coming in 2016.

Prediction: People will tell you that Georgia is down right now, saying that the Bulldogs are riddled with injuries on defense, struggling to find consistency on offense and coming off of a lackluster performance at Kentucky.

The reality is, Georgia has 16 5-star recruits on the team – the most in the country – and returned 90% of defensive production from an elite 2019 defense.

Yes, we will miss star safety Richard LeCounte, but do not expect the Bulldogs to miss a beat with guys like Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell and Monty Rice – all very experienced guys we will see on Sundays next year.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart is a perfect 3-0 vs. Florida coach Dan Mullen and I don’t expect that winning streak to end on Saturday. Georgia’s offense finds balance and the defense holds, Bulldogs win 31-23
