Commanders Wire continues a countdown to the Commanders season opener for 2023 in 56 days. Who was Washington’s best player wearing number 56?

LaVar Arrington (2000-2005) was an exciting linebacker out of Penn State who made so many splash plays he was drafted second overall in the 2000 NFL draft by Washington. Following his rookie season, Arrington produced greatly, earning three consecutive Pro Bowler designations. He was voted AP All-Pro second team in 2001. In 2002 Arrington produced 12 tackles for a loss, 95 combined tackles (70 solo, 25 assisted), 8 passes defended, 3 fumbles recovered (one touchdown), and his career-high 11 quarterback sacks. Arrington led the NFL in 2003 with 6 forced fumbles. He also was voted AP All-Pro second team. He had six quarterback sacks and 9 tackles for a loss. Unfortunately, injuries and frustration outlined his final two seasons in Washington, resulting in his playing in only 17 of the 32 games.

Len Hauss (1964-77) was an iron man for Washington, playing in 196 games, starting 194 over his 14-year career for the Burgundy and Gold. Hauss was drafted No. 115 overall out of Georgia. His rookie season he did not start two games. However, from that time forward in his 14 NFL seasons, Hauss never missed a game or a start. Hauss was a Pro Bowler for five seasons. He was voted AP All-Pro second team twice. He helped cement the offensive line that produced Larry Brown rushing for 5,000 yards in 5 seasons (14 game schedules). He started and was a key offensive leader for the playoffs for five teams (only four teams qualified in each conference) and the 1972 NFC Champion and Super Bowl VII team. He was named one of the top 70 Washington Redskins in 2002. Hauss died on Dec. 15, 2021, at age 79.

Photos: Georgia football shuts out Vanderbilt in 55-0 win

The Georgia Bulldogs won 55-0 at home over Vanderbilt. What were the top photos from the game?

The Georgia Bulldogs won in convincing fashion at home over Vanderbilt. Georgia’s 55-0 win over the Commodores means that the Bulldogs have outscored Vanderbilt 117-0 in the two last meetings between the SEC East foes.

Georgia (7-0) outgained Vanderbilt 579 to 150. Quarterbacks Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck both looked sharp for the Bulldogs. Georgia held a 28-0 halftime lead and scored three rushing touchdowns.

Now, the Bulldogs enter their bye week ahead of the Florida game. Here are the top photos form Georgia’s dominant win over Vanderbilt.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum: ‘Georgia is the new Alabama’

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum considers the Georgia Bulldogs to be the top team in college football.

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum considers the Georgia Bulldogs to be the class of college football at the moment. For the past decade-plus, Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide have been the golden standard of college football.

Clemson won a pair of College Football Playoff championships, but Alabama has consistently been in the mix for the national championship since they won Nick Saban’s first title at the program in 2009.

However, Finebaum is not afraid to contribute some of Alabama’s success to former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Smart, now the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, helped the Crimson Tide have some of the top defenses in college football history during his time at Alabama.

Kirby Smart has brought that same standard of excellence to the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia has played in two national championship games since Smart became the head coach at Georgia in 2016.

Georgia is off to an impressive 3-0 start to begin the 2022 college football season including a 48-7 win over South Carolina. That and Georgia’s season-opening win over Oregon has Paul Finebaum thinking that Georgia is the new Alabama.

The Atlanta Falcons have placed former Georgia Bulldogs punter Cameron Nizialek on injured reserve. Nizialek made the Atlanta Falcons’ roster this season, but has had up and down performances.

The 26-year-old punter has punted 18 times for an average of 45.4 yards this season. Nizialek additionally handles kickoffs for Atlanta. He has a 40% touchback rate on kickoffs this season.

Cameron Nizialek suffered a right hamstring injury in week four against the Washington Football Team. Nizialek’s injury forced Younghoe Koo to attempt kickoffs. The Football Team burned the Falcons for a kickoff return touchdown in the contest.

In a corresponding move, Falcons punter Dustin Colquitt was promoted to the Atlanta’s 53-man roster. It is unclear who will handle kickoff duties.

Nizialek, who came to UGA as a graduate transfer from Columbia University, was Georgia’s punter during the 2017-18 season when the Bulldogs won the Rose Bowl and came one play away from capturing a National Championship.

Nizialek was the punter for the Atlanta Legends in 2019. The Legends were briefly a member of the now extinct Alliance of American Football.

In his one year with Georgia, he averaged 45.0 yards per punt on 61 total punts. 26 of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line.  His career-best punt of 61 yards came in the Rose Bowl against Oklahoma. Nizialek has a long of 62 yards this season.

We wish Nizialek a speedy recovery. He can return in three weeks.

The Georgia Bulldogs have offered a scholarship to four-star tight end recruit Landen Thomas, who just  decommitted from the Florida State Seminoles. Thomas, a member of the class of 2024, committed to FSU very early in his recruitment, but reconsidered his decision after UGA offered him.

The four-star tight end plays high school football for Colquitt County in Moultrie, Georgia. He is currently the top-ranked tight end in the Sophomore class.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound tight end has offers from schools like Arkansas, LSU, Miami, FSU, and more. He has to like how often Georgia has thrown to true freshman tight end Brock Bowers this year.

Thomas still has a long way to go in his recruitment. He has already been invited to the 2024 Under Armour All-America game.

Landen Thomas announced his scholarship offer from UGA via his Twitter account:

Landen Thomas visited Georgia for the Arkansas game. He must have been impressed with Georgia’s dedicated fan base and state of the art football facility.

Georgia football looking to flip five-star DT

Will Mykel Williams and other USC Trojans class of 2022 commitments stick with the program after Clay Helton’s firing?

The Georgia Bulldogs were among the schools seeking a commitment from elite defensive tackle recruit Mykel Williams, but Williams committed to the USC Trojans in June.

Now, things have changed with the USC football program following their rough 42-28 loss to Stanford. The Trojans fired head coach Clay Helton, who has been on the hot seat for a long time, following the loss.

Who will be the next head coach of the Southern California Trojans? Georgia’s Dan Lanning could be a target with the way the UGA defense has played in 2021. Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Will Mykel Williams and other USC Trojans class of 2022 commitments stick with the program? USC has a lot of allure regardless of their coach, but the program will be in transition and hasn’t performed up to standards in recent seasons.

Mykel Williams is a five-star defensive tackle from Columbus, Georgia, who stars for Hardaway High School.

The Georgia defense has been extremely impressive to start the 2021 college football season. UGA has displayed a powerful recruiting message on the defensive side of the field. The Bulldogs defense has more sacks (10) and points off defensive touchdowns (14) than points allowed (three). Georgia’s lone touchdown given up this season was a pick-six.

At Hardaway, Mykel Williams has played both offensive and defensive line. He is a sack artist that shows explosive closing speed on defense. Williams has positional versatility along the defensive line, where he lines up at defensive tackle and defensive end. Williams does a solid job of getting his hands up in passing lanes to deflect passes. He should earn early playing time in college.

Williams committed to USC over Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, LSU, Penn State, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Georgia.

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Williams is ranked the No. 5 defensive lineman in the nation and No. 3 player in Georgia according to the 247Sports composite. Williams is expected to continue taking visits this fall.

Can Kirby Smart and company land a commitment from the talented in-state defensive lineman? We will provide updates as Mykel Williams re-evaluates his recruitment following USC’s coaching change.
