5 things that went horribly wrong for Alabama basketball in the SEC Tournament

Five reasons the Tide collapsed in the SEC Tournament against Vanderbilt.

When the Crimson Tide took the floor against the Vanderbilt Commodores in the second round of the SEC Tournament, many expected Alabama to advance. That wasn’t to be, however, following a Tide collapse after stretching the lead to as many as 14 points.

The Commodores closed in and never took their foot off the gas pedal, but even more to blame is the performance of the Tide in the second half. It was a performance that clearly left a lot to be desired, especially if you’re an Alabama fan.

Let’s get into some of the things that went wrong for Alabama in the 82-76 loss to Vanderbilt.

 

Latest NBA mock draft has a pair Alabama players selected

Where does ESPN’s latest NBA mock draft have JD Davison and Keon Ellis projected?

Much like the NFL, mock drafts for the NBA are updated almost daily. Also like football, Alabama is becoming increasingly represented on the mock draft scene.

Early Wednesday morning, ESPN released its all-new NBA two-round mock draft (subscription required) and it featured a pair of Alabama players in freshman guard JD Davison and senior guard/forward Keon Ellis.

Davison is currently projected to be selected by the Miami Heat with pick No. 27 of the first round. If Davison indeed enters the draft and is selected in the first round that would put the Crimson Tide having a first-round pick in three out of the last four NBA drafts.

Ellis is projected to be a second-round selection and No. 49 overall by the New Orleans Pelicans. If Ellis is selected by the Pelicans, he would join fellow former Alabama players Herbert Jones and Kira Lewis Jr. in New Orleans.

Alabama takes down Vanderbilt on the road 74-72

The Crimson Tide fights off the Commodores in 74-72 road win.

Nate Oats took his Alabama Crimson Tide basketball squad to Nashville for a road game against the Commodores of Vanderbilt on Tuesday evening and came out with his eighth win in SEC play on the year.

Alabama moves to 18-10 on the season including an 8-7 record in conference competition after the close 74-72 victory.

The Crimson Tide had to stave off a late push by the Commodores to come away with the close road win against a good team that came into this game with two consecutive solid wins against then-No. 1 Auburn and Texas A&M.

Alabama was led in scoring by Jahvon Quinerly, who finished the game with 19 points. Noah Gurley, JD Davison and Keon Ellis followed Quinerly in total points with 11, 10 and 10 respectively.

Davison also came down with nine rebounds to lead the Tide on the boards for the night.

Scotty Pippen jr led the Commodores with 26 points. He also tallied six assists in Vanderbilt’s eleventh loss on the year.

Next up for Alabama is a home game against South Carolina on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. CST.

Alabama can’t get it done against Kentucky in 90-81 loss in Rupp Arena

Alabama can’t get it done in Rupp Arena.

Alabama started hot from behind the 3PT line early in their Saturday afternoon game against the No. 4 Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, but ultimately couldn’t get it done after a long deliberation from the refs slowed the game.

The Tide jumped out to a double-digit lead early in the first half, but couldn’t maintain pace and effort throughout the entire contest.

Alabama shot 43.5% from the field and put up 40 three-point shots. Keon Ellis led all Tide scorers with 28 points while sinking seven out of 11 three pointers. Jaden Shackelford and Noah Gurley followed Ellis on Alabama’s side of the box score with 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Kellan Grady led Kentucky scorers with 25 points followed by Oscar Tshiebwe with 21.

The Wildcats shot 53% from the floor and 64% from beyond the arc.

Alabama’s record drops to 17-10 on the year and 7-7 in SEC play.

Next up for the Crimson Tide is another road game in Nashville as they take on the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Ranking Alabama’s basketball roster

With just six games remaining in the regular season, the Alabama Crimson Tide currently sits fifth in the SEC with a 6-6 conference record and a 16-9 record overall.

Although Alabama is solidly in the NCAA tournament, the Crimson Tide could drastically improve its seeding with a strong finish in conference play.

As the regular season continues to wind down we now have a pretty clear picture of who the Tide’s best players are. So I thought we could take a look at who I believe are the top-10 players for Nate Oats right now.

Obviously, this is very subjective so I am sure everyone will agree with my list completely!

Let’s get started, shall we?

Turnovers doom LSU in Tuscaloosa as Alabama ends skid

LSU can’t overcome turnovers and being outrebounded in loss to Alabama.

LSU men’s basketball team traveled to Alabama to take on the Crimson Tide. Unfortunately, LSU lost to Alabama 70-67 for their fifth straight loss in the series.

LSU was down in the second half but used a 14-1 run to erase the deficit. Eric Gaines missed a last-second three-point shot at the buzzer to tie the game. LSU has now lost two games in a row.

Xavier Pinson did not play again, and the Tigers lost Darius Days to an ankle injury in the first half. He finished with 5 points and two rebounds in 12 minutes.

Tari Eason tried to carry the load off the bench and he finished with 26 points on 9-13 shooting from the field. Eason also added ten rebounds. Brandon Murray played a good game with 19 points and six rebounds. They were the Tigers only two players score in double figures.

Jaden Shackelford led the way for Alabama with 26 points and had four rebounds and four steals. Shackleford had to have a big game to upset LSU, and he did. Jahvon Quinerly scored 17 points, while Keon Ellis had 12 points and hit two free throws with five seconds left, giving the Crimson Tide the win.

LSU lost this game because of their 20 turnovers, and they got outrebounded 44-36, with 19 of Alabama’s 44 rebounds being offensive. The Tigers head to Tennesse Saturday to take the Vols.
