Pelicans sign Iowa State’s Izaiah Brockington to two-way contract

The former Iowa State guard signed a two-way contract with the Pelicans on Monday.

Former Iowa State guard Izaiah Brockington signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, the team announced on Monday.

The signing was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Brockington was named to the All-Big 12 first team last season after averaging 16.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals as a senior. He produced 12 games with at least 20 points and ranked in the top four in scoring and rebounding in the conference.

The 23-year-old went undrafted this year after tearing his ACL during a pre-draft workout with the Pelicans. He is rehabbing from the injury and hopes to return to play at some point this season.

The Pelicans have a long-term interest in Brockington and are committed to him this season and beyond. He was viewed as a potential second-round pick given his abilities on both ends of the court, and he could develop into a rotation player in New Orleans.

New Orleans begins its preseason schedule on Oct. 4.

Hawks to host pre-draft workout with Julian Champagnie, others

Champagnie is among the six prospects set to work out with the Hawks on Monday.

St. John’s junior Julian Champagnie is among the prospects set to participate in a pre-draft workout with the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

Champagnie, who was named to the All-Big East first team, averaged 19.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, two assists, two steals and 1.1 blocked shots in 31 games. He finished second in scoring in the conference and 35th in the country, overall.

Atlanta enters the pre-draft process with the 16th and 44th picks, respectively. They also hosted workouts on multiple days last week and appear to be ramping up their draft preparation with the combine set to take place May 16-22.

Champagnie is most commonly projected to be a second-round pick. He will also work out with the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets this week and was recently invited to compete in the draft combine May 16-22 from Chicago, Illinois.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

Former Penn State guard Izaiah Brockington declares for the NBA Draft

This former Penn State basketball player has declared for the NBA draft.

While he may not still be a Nittany Lion, it is worth noting how [autotag]Izaiah Brockington[/autotag] is now taking his talents to the NBA after transferring to Iowa State. Brockington announced on his Twitter account that he was declaring for the draft after Iowa State’s sweet sixteen exit.

Before leaving for Iowa State, Brockington had carved out a role on a Penn State squad that while it never played too much potential did help groom Brockington. Ironically, Brockington had transferred to Penn State from Saint Bonaventure in 2018. Once he was eligible at Penn State he was able to earn decent minutes as a redshirt sophomore with 20 minutes a game and averaged 8 points, 2 rebounds and an assist a game. Those numbers jumped during his junior season improved to  12.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.

That improvement from his sophomore to junior year had him primed for a breakout senior season but alas he decided to have that breakout somewhere else. He transferred of course to Iowa State and then proceeded to have career highs. While Penn State will forever be a part of his journey, it does seem from the highlights posted by Draft Express that they missed out on quite the talent.

 

Penn State finished the season 14-17 and finished third to last in the Big Ten, although they had a strong showing in the Big Ten tourney and hope to grow on that in 2022. The program has already started to get commits for the 2022 class. Mix in some veterans with some fresh faces and maybe Penn State can see themselves working their way out of the cellar of the Big Ten next season.
