Sixers sign then waive Sekou Doumbouya, Aminu Mohammed for Blue Coats

The Philadelphia 76ers will sign and then waive Sekou Doumbouya and Aminu Mohammed for them to join the Delaware Blue Coats.

The Philadelphia 76ers are planning to contend for a title in the present, but they also have to be sure they are stockpiled with young players for the future.

The Sixers have been signing and waiving a series of players, the necessary groundwork for them to join Philadelphia’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. On Saturday, they did the same thing with two more young prospects.

Philadelphia signed a former 15th pick, Sekou Doumbouya, and undrafted guard, Aminu Mohammed, and waived them. Doumbouya has NBA experience with the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Lakers. Mohammed was on Philadelphia’s summer league team.

Doumbouya has career averages of 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds and Mohammed averaged 13.7 points and 8.2 rebounds as a freshman at Georgetown. Both look to make an impact with the Blue Coats and eventually earn another shot in the NBA.

Observations of Isaiah Joe, Sixers in summer league win over Thunder

Here are some observations from Isaiah Joe and the Philadelphia 76ers in a summer league matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Philadelphia 76ers finished up the Salt Lake City portion of the 2022 summer league when they took on the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday and one could definitely tell it was their last day in Utah.

The Sixers looked a little sluggish from the jump in this one, but they were then able to pick it up and they came away with a close 80-79 win over the Thunder. The Sixers got a big game out of Isaiah Joe who had 19 points and four steals while Oklahoma City was missing the No. 2 overall pick, Chet Holmgren.

Paul Reed had 14 and seven rebounds, Jaden Springer had 11 and six rebounds, and Aminu Mohammed had seven off the bench. Trevelin Queen pulled down eight boards with three assists to chip in.

Here are some observations from the win over the Thunder:

Observations from Paul Reed, summer Sixers in SLC loss to Grizzlies

Here are observations from Paul Reed and the summer version of the Philadelphia 76ers in a Salt Lake City loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Philadelphia 76ers opened up the 2022 summer session in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies just looking to grow their youngsters. It’s the summer so now is the time to ensure that everybody is able to grow and continue to develop as young players.

The Sixers were able to get some good play from their summer league veterans in Paul Reed and Isaiah Joe, but the Sixers could not stop the Grizzlies from deep in a tough 103-99 loss to open up the summer. Memphis was 15-for-30 from deep. Philadelphia will have two more games in Utah before they head to Las Vegas.

Reed had 20 points, 15 rebounds, and four steals to lead Philadelphia, Joe had 19 points, Charles Bassey had seven points and six rebounds, and Jaden Springer had 15 points. Charlie Brown Jr. hopped off the bench and had 15 points and seven rebounds while Grant Riller added 12 points.

Here are some observations from the summer league opener:

Sixers to sign Georgetown’s Aminu Mohammed to exhibit 10 contract

The Philadelphia 76ers will sign Georgetown guard Aminu Mohammed to an exhibit 10 deal.

After the Philadelphia 76ers swung their big deal to acquire De’Anthony Melton from the Memphis Grizzlies, their focus now turns to summer league among other events in the NBA.

Free agency is around the corner and one can assume that they will make more trades in order to position themselves for contention in the East and summer league is set to begin July 7 in Las Vegas.

They will have young players like Jaden Springer and Charles Bassey out in Vegas, but there will also be some undrafted free agents there as well. After the draft concluded, the team signed some undrafted free agents among them, Georgetown guard Aminu Mohammed who will sign an Exhibit 10 deal with the Sixers.

Mohammed played one college season at Georgetown where he averaged 13.7 points and 8.2 rebounds in the 2021-22 season. He shot 37.9% from the floor and 31% from deep so he will need to improve on those numbers in the summer league to earn a look in training camp.

‘I want to be in a role like Marcus Smart for the Celtics,’ says Georgetown guard Aminu Mohammed

The long, athletic guard takes inspiration from a team that would likely be in a position to draft him at No. 53.

The Boston Celtics might not be thinking about the 2022 NBA draft as their primary focus at the moment given they are knotted up at 2 games apiece with the Golden State Warriors in the 2022 NBA Finals, but at least some of the organization remains focused on the looming draft and the talent they might be able to onboard with the No. 53 pick, their only selection of the draft.

And they might do well to bring in players who already see themselves as a kindred spirit in terms of the attention and effort they bring to the defensive end of the ball, such as Georgetown guard Aminu Mohammed.

A native of Lagos, Nigeria, who relocated to the US at age 14 to pursue basketball, Mohammed quickly rose through the ranks of NCAA prospects to become a five-star recruit ahead of electing to sign with the Hoyas for the next step of his career.

Aminu Mohammed produced a strong freshman campaign with the Georgetown Hoyas, and the 20-year-old is aiming to continue that run to the NBA.

Mohammed was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and moved to the United States at 14. He then achieved tremendous success at Greenwood Laboratory School in Springfield, Missouri, becoming Gatorade Player of the Year in the state as a sophomore.

He eventually added McDonald’s All-American and Jordan Brand Classic honors to his resume. He became a five-star recruit and committed to play at Georgetown over the likes of Georgia, Indiana and Kansas State among others.

Mohammed, who was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team, averaged 13.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.6 steals in 31 games. He became just the ninth freshman since 1972 to lead the Hoyas in rebounding, and the first since Otto Porter Jr. in 2012.

Now, Mohammed is preparing to continue his journey to the NBA.

He enters the draft regarded for his versatility and ability to guard multiple positions with his 6-foot-11 wingspan. He was among the standouts at the draft combine last month, averaging 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and one block in two scrimmage games.

Mohammed has worked out for several teams ahead of the draft, including the Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards among others. He is diligently showcasing himself on and off the court throughout the process in an effort to impress those watching.
