Alabama forward James Rojas announces transfer destination

Former Alabama forward James Rojas has found his new home.

Nate Oats is entering his fourth season as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Alabama. To say that this offseason has been active would be an understatement. The amount of roster turnover that Oats and the Tide have faced has been enormous.

Several players who were eligible to return to Tuscaloosa have either chosen to try their chances at the next level or simply enter into the NCAA’s transfer portal.

One such player was forward James Rojas. Less than a week ago Rojas decided to enter the transfer portal and now the New York native has made his decision on where he will play for his final season at the collegiate level.

On Sunday afternoon Rojas announced his intentions to transfer to Wichita State of The American Conference.

Rojas announced his decision via his Instagram account.

Rojas averaged 5.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game during the 2021-22 season for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama basketball forward James Rojas enters transfer portal

Alabama is up to five transfers from scholarship players.

The hits keep on coming for Nate Oats and his Alabama men’s basketball program.

Five scholarship players – Alex Tchikou, Keon Ambrose-Hylton, Jusaun Holt, Juwan Gary, and now, James Rojas – will be headed elsewhere for 2022 and beyond by way of the NCAA transfer portal.

Established in October of 2018, the NCAA’s transfer portal allows student-athletes to enter their name into an online database and essentially allow themselves to be re-recruited. Players can withdraw their name from the database at any time.

The 6-8, 220-pound forward has one year of eligibility remaining. He transferred to Alabama from JUCO Hutchinson Community College in Kansas in 2019. He sat out during his first season with a medical redshirt before going on to play 30 games for Alabama in 2020-21. In 2021 he missed much of the season due to an ACL injury, but returned to contribute in January. In two seasons and 47 games in Tuscaloosa, he averaged 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds across 12 minutes per game.

Rojas was one of the best defenders that the Tide was able to play this season, and his presence will be missed.

Alabama Morning Drive: A pair of ‘Bama basketball players enter the portal

The latest news and notes involving the Alabama Crimson Tide on Tuesday morning.

Good Tuesday morning and welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone had a good start to the workweek and is ready to take on whatever today can throw at us.

In today’s edition, we are going to look at which two Alabama men’s basketball players are now transferring, how the Alabama softball team did in the series finale, and also a couple of football recruiting nuggets.

Let’s get right to it!

First…Softball suffers loss in game three…

Ranking the Alabama Men’s Basketball Roster

Ranking Alabama’s basketball roster

With just six games remaining in the regular season, the Alabama Crimson Tide currently sits fifth in the SEC with a 6-6 conference record and a 16-9 record overall.

Although Alabama is solidly in the NCAA tournament, the Crimson Tide could drastically improve its seeding with a strong finish in conference play.

As the regular season continues to wind down we now have a pretty clear picture of who the Tide’s best players are. So I thought we could take a look at who I believe are the top-10 players for Nate Oats right now.

Obviously, this is very subjective so I am sure everyone will agree with my list completely!

Let’s get started, shall we?

Alabama drops third straight, this time against Mississippi State

The Tide is on a 3-game losing streak in SEC play.

Alabama (11-6, 2-3) was on a two-game losing skid for the first time in two years after suffering losses to Missouri on the road and No. 4 Auburn at home and were looking to turn their luck around against Mississippi State on the road in Starkville.

The Bulldogs (12-5, 3-1) got off to a 2-1 start in SEC play coming into this game against the Tide, with an overall record of 11-4 on the season. Alabama will leave with their third consecutive loss after a 78-76 showing.

The Crimson Tide shot 39% from the field, including 27% from 3PT-range. Jaden Shackelford led the Tide in scoring with 17 points. Keon Ellis and Darius Miles followed with 14 points each.

James Rojas made his 2021-22 season debut after going in in the middle of the first half. he logged six total points and two rebounds in his first game back in awhile.

Alabama allowed 40% shooting while allowing just 12% from beyond the three-point line.

Next up for the Crimson Tide is a home game against the LSU Tigers on Wednesday. It can be viewed on ESPN2 with tip-off coming at 6:00 p.m. CST.

Alabama basketball target Jordan Bruner sets commitment time, date

Alabama basketball target Jordan Bruner will make his college decision on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET.

As of late, the Alabama basketball program has been on a tear when it comes to its 2020 recruiting class.

Within the last two weeks, the Crimson Tide have added three commitments, including five-star guard Josh Primo, four-star guard Keon Ellis and three-star forward Darius Miller.

Now, head coach Nate Oats and company have their sights set on Yale graduate transfer Jordan Bruner, who has already narrowed down his list to three schools: Baylor, Maryland and, of course, Alabama.

In addition, the 6-foot-9 versatile forward from Columbia (S.C.) told Tyler DeLuca that he would be making his announcement on Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. CT).

As of right now, it looks like Baylor and Alabama are in the lead, but anything can happen between now and Bruner’s announcement time tomorrow.

Bruner averaged an impressive 10.9 points and 9.2 rebounds for Yale last season while also averaging 3.8 assists and 1.7 blocks.

That versatility, in addition to being able to run the floor, finish at the rim and be effective beyond the three-point arc, would make Bruner a valuable and dangerous addition to an already impressive roster in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide will also have other new key additions to its 2020 on-court rotation in Jahvon Quinerly, Juwan Gary and James Rojas, making this team a strong candidate to make a push for a NCAA Tournament bid — and beyond.

Stay tuned for more information on Bruner’s recruitment from Roll Tide Wire!
