Panthers release Jake Luton from practice squad

Jake Luton has made his third exit from the Panthers’ practice squad this season.

You can scratch Jake Luton’s name off your program yet again.

On Wednesday morning, the Carolina Panthers announced that they have released the 27-year-old quarterback from their practice squad. This now marks Luton’s third departure from the group this season.

His first exit came back on Sept. 26, when the New Orleans Saints signed him off Carolina’s practice squad. He returned a month later, when the Panthers added him and tight end Jordan Matthews on Oct. 25.

Luton was then released on Nov. 30 to make room for guard Deonte Brown. He’d make his second return a week later, after Carolina parted ways with wide receiver Matt Landers and outside linebacker Jordan Thomas.

The 6-foot-6, 224-pound passer was a sixth-round selection of the Jacksonville Jaguars from the 2020 NFL draft. He appeared in two of the Panthers’ three preseason contests this past summer, where he completed eight of his 19 passing attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

7 quarterbacks Jaguars could sign after Patriots claimed Nathan Rourke

The Jaguars are suddenly in need of a quarterback with Trevor Lawrence in concussion protocol and Nathan Rourke claimed by the Patriots.

Update: The Jaguars signed E.J. Perry to their practice squad Tuesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in sudden need of a quarterback.

For most of the year, the team has carried two quarterbacks on the active roster, Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard, as well as former CFL star Nathan Rourke on the practice squad.

Now the team temporarily has only one passer after Lawrence landed in the concussion protocol and Rourke was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots.

Rourke, 25, was signed to the active roster in October when Lawrence was questionable for a Week 7 game due to a knee injury. The Jaguars then waived Rourke and added him back to the practice squad after the game.

Jacksonville tried to do the same when an ankle sprain had Lawrence questionable for a Week 14 game. But the Patriots scooped up Rourke before he could get back to the Jaguars’ practice squad.

If Lawrence can’t play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there’s no doubt that Beathard will be the team’s starter. But there’s also no question that the Jaguars need to add another player at the position.

Here are seven quarterbacks on the market who could be considered by the Jaguars:

Report: Saints tried, failed to poach Broncos practice squad quarterback

The Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson reports the Saints tried and failed to poach Broncos practice squad QB Ben DiNucci, who didn’t see a better situation in New Orleans:

The New Orleans Saints explored multiple options when Derek Carr went down with a shoulder injury back in Week 3, looking to reinforce the depth chart with a backup quarterback behind Jameis Winston. The Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson reports that the Saints tried and failed to poach quarterback Ben DiNucci from the Broncos practice squad in September.

But DiNucci didn’t see a better situation on the Saints’ 53-man roster than he already had in Denver. The Saints signed Jake Luton from the Carolina Panthers practice squad and rostered him for three weeks while Carr played through his injured throwing shoulder; when rookie quarterback Jake Haener returned from a six-week suspension to start the season, Luton was waived.

A former seventh-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2020 NFL draft, DiNucci played college football at Pittsburgh and James Madison before trying his hand with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023, where he led the startup squad to a 7-3 record and playoff berth. The Broncos signed him after a success tryout at rookie minicamp in May.

DiNucci would have had the same fate without the promise of a spot on the Broncos practice squad once he was available again, so it’s easy to understand why he would rather stay in Denver than relocate to New Orleans. It doesn’t help that Sean Payton’s Broncos are surging towards a potential playoff berth (their 7-6 record has them in ninth place in the AFC playoff standings) while the Saints are the last-ranked 6-7 team in the NFC (in eleventh place). Even if DiNucci had hung around with the Saints, if nothing else the vibes in Denver seems to be in a much better place.

Panthers’ updated practice squad after addition of Jake Luton

QB Jake Luton returned to the Panthers’ practice squad on Tuesday.

Jake Luton is back . . . again.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers signed Luton to their practice squad. This will now be the 27-year-old quarterback’s third stint with the group this season.

The team also released wide receiver Matt Landers and outside linebacker Jordan Thomas.

Let’s take an updated look at the practice squad heading into Wednesday.

Panthers sign QB Jake Luton, release 2 players from practice squad

The Panthers brought back QB Jake Luton to their practice squad on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers made a few moves to their practice squad on Tuesday.

Coming in, or coming back in, is quarterback Jake Luton. The 27-year-old passer was released from the group this past Thursday, when the team had to make room for guard Deonte Brown.

Luckily for Luton, there’s now room for him and his third stint on Carolina’s practice squad this season. His first run ended back on Sept. 26—when the division rival New Orleans Saints, this weekend’s opponents, poached him to their active roster.

Luton, a 2020 sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has played three regular-season games in his NFL career—all of which came during his rookie season. He appeared in two of the Panthers’ preseason contests this past summer, where he completed eight of his 19 passing attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Panthers, additionally, cleared a bit more space on the practice squad—releasing wide receiver Matt Landers and outside linebacker Jordan Thomas.

Panthers’ updated practice squad after addition of Deonte Brown

Panthers’ updated 16-man practice squad following Thursday’s return of Deonte Brown

The Carolina Panthers brought back a familiar face to their practice squad on Thursday, adding guard Deonte Brown at the expense of quarterback Jake Luton.

Brown’s return may not be too surprising considering the current state (or whatever’s left of it) of Carolina’s interior offensive line. With Brady Christensen, Austin Corbett and Chandler Zavala now all lost for the rest of the season, the 2021 sixth-round pick could provide some insurance to a battered front.

Let’s take an updated look at the practice squad with Brown, once again, in the fold:

Panthers sign Deonte Brown back to practice squad, release Jake Luton

The Panthers made an adjustment to their practice squad on Thursday.

The Carolina Panthers are continuing to beef up their depth in the offensive trench.

As first reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com on Thursday morning, guard Deonte Brown has been signed back to the practice squad.

Brown who was released alongside fellow interior lineman Calvin Throckmorton on Nov. 14, will now make his return to the group following a two-week absence. This is the second time this season Carolina has brought back the 25-year-old lineman, who was also cut at the end of the summer as the team reached its initial 53-man roster.

A sixth-round pick of the 2021 draft, the University of Alabama product has appeared in three regular-season games over his NFL career. All three outings came during his rookie campaign.

To make some room for the 6-foot-4, 335-pounder, the second hog molly to be added to the practice squad in as many days, the Panthers released quarterback Jake Luton.

Panthers’ updated 16-man practice squad after Wednesday’s additions

Panthers’ updated practice squad following Wednesday’s signings of QB Jake Luton and TE Jordan Matthews.

After running back Jashaun Corbin’s return to New York and offensive lineman Justin McCray’s release, the Carolina Panthers had two spots open on their practice squad coming into Wednesday. But, those spots would be quickly filled.

As announced this morning, the team added quarterback Jake Luton and tight end Jordan Matthews to the group.

So, with that duo now in the fold, let’s take an updated look at Carolina’s 16-player practice squad:

Panthers add 2 players to practice squad on Wednesday

The Panthers have signed QB Jake Luton and TE Jordan Matthews to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers kept busy after a flurry of activity on Tuesday.

As first reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the team has signed two familiar faces to its practice squad this morning—quarterback Jake Luton and tight end Jordan Matthews. Luton had already spent the early portions of the season on the squad while Matthews was brought in for a tryout during mandatory minicamp in June.

The 27-year-old passer returns after a brief detour to New Orleans. Luton was signed away to the Saints’ active roster back on Sept. 26 and then released three weeks later.

Luton appeared in two of Carolina’s three preseason outings this past summer. He completed eight of his 19 attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Matthews, a former second-round pick and former wide receiver, has played eight seasons in the NFL—having recorded 274 receptions for 3,288 yards and 22 touchdowns over 76 games. He spent one of those seasons (2016) under Panthers head coach Frank Reich, who was the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator at the time.
