Two former Dolphins sign with XFL teams on Thursday

Some former Dolphins find homes in the XFL.

Around the NFL, there are only 2,208 roster and practice squad spots for players to make a name for themselves. So, if a player can’t find a place to play with one of the 32 teams, they have the option to go to another league.

That’s exactly what two former Miami Dolphins did on Thursday, as offensive lineman Larnel Coleman and defensive back Keidron Smith have signed with the Houston Roughnecks and Orlando Guardians, respectively, of the XFL.

Coleman, 25, was a seventh-round pick of the Dolphins in 2021 after a collegiate career at UMass. He spent his rookie season on injured reserve and was on Miami’s practice squad in 2022 when he was signed by the Carolina Panthers. He’s only played in one NFL game.

Smith, 24, was an undrafted free agent signed by the Dolphins after this year’s draft following his time with Kentucky. However, he was waived during roster cuts. He spent some time with the Washington Commanders practice squad.

The XFL season is planned to begin in late March 2024.

Panthers waive 11 players on Saturday

The first wave of this weekend’s cutdown tsunami has crashed for the Panthers.

On Saturday, the Carolina Panthers began the trek towards their initial 53-man roster—waiving a total of 11 players.

Those players are as follows:

  • QB Jake Luton
  • RB Camerun Peoples
  • WR Gary Jennings
  • WR C.J. Saunders
  • OT Larnel Coleman
  • DT Antwuan Jackson
  • LB Bumper Pool
  • S Collin Duncan
  • S Josh Thomas
  • CB Rejzohn Wright
  • K Matthew Wright

The most notable name of the bunch is, perhaps, Luton. A former sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Luton completed eight of his 19 throws for 115 yards, a touchdown and an interception over two preseason outings.

But given the current state of Carolina’s quarterbacks room—with rookie Bryce Young as the starter, veteran Andy Dalton as the backup and Matt Corral barely holding on as the No. 3 option—the cut of Luton was not a surprise in the least.

He and the 10 other players who were waived by Carolina will now hit the waiver wire and can be claimed by another team on Wednesday. If they are not, they will become free agents and could return to the Panthers as part of their practice squad.

WATCH: Video of Saturday’s fight at Panthers training camp

Here’s a clip of Saturday’s little dust-up between the Panthers offensive linemen and linebackers:

A few Carolina Panthers did more than just get “back together” on Saturday.

In a minor hiccup during an otherwise fun afternoon, the team had themselves some tag team action. Following a takedown of wideout C.J. Saunders in team drills, offensive linemen Larnel Coleman and J.D. DiRenzo got into a shoving match with linebackers Jordan Thomas and Brandon Smith.

Here, courtesy of FOX Charlotte’s Will Kunkel, is a clip of the small scuffle:

Head coach Frank Reich commented on his team’s first dustup of the summer following practice.

“I’m not really lookin’ for any of that,” he said. “I’m not tryin’ to manufacture the emotion. It happens sometimes. And for us out there, right, it’s like, ‘ho-hum.’ It’s gonna happen at some point. But really, the energy and enthusiasm and the grit and the fight really has to come within.

“So, I think our guys have been doing that. When you have those moments there, you just move on and you stay focused.”

Luckily, cooler heads prevailed. Veteran backer Shaq Thompson would later play peacemaker between the offense and defense, something Reich seemed glad to see.

“These guys—they know what time it is,” Reich added. “They know how to take care of themselves. And everybody knows, we’re tryin’ to accomplish something special, and we wanna do something special. We can’t one of our guys gettin’ hurt fightin’ each other. Not much made of it. They guys know it, know how to handle it and did a good job.”

In a totally unrelated note, the pads go on starting Monday!

Panthers training camp tracker: Observations and takeaways from Day 3

Not only did the Panthers “get back” on Saturday, but they also got a little physical during their third practice of training camp.

Both Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford and UFC 291 may be going down tonight, but we got a little bit of combat during the third outing of Carolina Panthers training camp this afternoon.

Here are the top takeaways and observations from the start of “Back Together Weekend” on Saturday:

Frank Reich speaks on Panthers’ 1st training camp fight of 2023

The Panthers, on the biggest professional fight day of the year, got their first dust-up of 2023 training camp.

NFL head coaches probably don’t mind seeing their players go through some battles during the summer. But Frank Reich prefers his team’s battles to be a bit less literal.

On Saturday, the Carolina Panthers got their first training camp fight of 2023—as offensive tackle Larnel Coleman and outside linebacker Jordan Thomas engaged in a shoving match. After practice, Reich told reporters he’d prefer not to see any more of that.

Thomas, a tight end-turned-linebacker, brought wide receiver C.J. Saunders down to the ground down during 11-on-11 drills—something Coleman took exception to. Luckily, fellow backer and longtime Panther Shaq Thompson seemingly mediated the situation and cooler heads prevailed.

So let’s just leave the fighting to the pros today, shall we?

‘Madden NFL 24’ ratings for Panthers offensive linemen revealed

Here’s how the Panthers’ hog mollies are stacking up in the “Madden NFL 24” ratings:

For the first time in some time, the Carolina Panthers seem to have an offensive line they can rely upon. But do the folks over at EA Sports feel the same way?

Here are the “Madden NFL 24” ratings for the team’s offensive linemen:

Dolphins lose practice squad OT Larnel Coleman, sign OT Grant Hermanns

Coleman signed with the Panthers active roster.

The Miami Dolphins’ roster, more specifically, their practice squad, continues to be everchanging.

On Tuesday, offensive tackle Larnel Coleman, who had gotten some solid opportunities during preseason this year, was signed to the Carolina Panthers’ active roster. This move left another opening for Miami after they signed Calvin Jackson and Jamal Perry on Tuesday.

With this open spot, the Dolphins added another offensive tackle, this time signing Grant Hermanns.

Hermanns, 24, went undrafted in 2021 out of Purdue, signing with the New York Jets as a free agent. He spent the entirety of his rookie season on the practice squad. This year, he’s played seven total snaps, all on special teams.

Panthers place DE Henry Anderson on NFI, sign three players

The Panthers announced a handful of moves on Tuesday, one of which landed DE Henry Anderson on NFI.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers announced that they’ve placed defensive end Henry Anderson on the reserve/non-football injury or illness list. He will now, similarly to injured reserve, miss at least the next four weeks.

Anderson signed on with the Panthers back on Sept. 5, a move that prompted the surprising release of 2021 draft pick and fellow defensive lineman Daviyon Nixon. Through six games in 2022, he has recorded 12 combined tackles (two for a loss) and one quarterback hit.

The eighth-year defender, who was listed with an illness on Sunday, did not play in the Week 7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carolina also announced a pair of signings in cornerback Tae Hayes and offensive lineman Larnel Coleman.

Hayes, a summer standout, stuck on into the regular season as a member of the team’s practice squad. He has been called up over the last two weeks with injuries to Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson and CJ Henderson.

Coleman, whose signing was first reported yesterday by Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, will join the 53-man roster from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

Additionally, defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, who was waived on Saturday, will fill Hayes’ vacated spot on Carolina’s practice squad.

Panthers to sign OT Larnel Coleman off Dolphins’ practice squad

According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the Panthers are signing OT Larnel Coleman off the Dolphins’ practice squad and onto their 53-man roster.

The Carolina Panthers currently have two spots to fill on their 53-man roster. And by tomorrow, it’ll likely be down to at least one.

As reported by Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network on Monday evening, the Panthers are signing offensive tackle Larnel Coleman from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. The 6-foot-6, 307-pounder, by virtue of said poaching, will now move to Carolina’s active roster.

A University of Massachusetts product, Coleman was drafted by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2021 draft. The Maiden, Mass. native played in 36 games as a member of the Minutemen from 2016 to 2020.

Coleman has recorded just one regular-season snap in his two years with Miami. That play came in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills at right tackle.

The Panthers, additionally, have officially parted ways with their own 2021 seventh-rounder. Defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, who played in five games over the last two campaigns, has cleared waivers and is now a free agent.

Dolphins elevate OT Larnel Coleman vs. Bengals

This is his third elevation.

With their Thursday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals coming up, the Miami Dolphins have opted to bring up just one player from their practice squad.

The team announced Thursday afternoon that offensive tackle Larnel Coleman is being elevated to the active roster for the contest. This is his third elevation.

Miami has had injuries at tackle already this year – Austin Jackson is on injured reserve, Terron Armstead is playing through a toe injury and Greg Little left their Week 3 game with a finger injury.

Armstead and Little are expected to play, so Coleman’s presence gives some more depth just in case one of them goes down.

However, with this being his third elevation, Coleman can’t be elevated again. So, the Dolphins will either leave him on the practice squad for the remainder of the year, or they’ll have to sign him to their active roster as they did with River Cracraft this week.
