Panthers to re-sign LB Tae Davis on 1-year deal

The Panthers are bringing back LB Tae Davis.

The Carolina Panthers continued to solidify their special teams on Friday.

As announced this morning, the Panthers have agreed to terms on a new deal with linebacker Tae Davis. The one-year pact comes shortly after Carolina officially brought back both safety Sam Franklin Jr. and running back/return specialist Raheem Blackshear.

Davis, a University of Tennessee product, cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 2018. Over his year and a half for Big Blue, he recorded 33 combined tackles, 2.0 sacks, five quarterback hits and a forced fumble in 18 games.

He’d then sign on with the Cleveland Browns after being waived in the middle of the 2019 campaign. Davis went on to rack up two stints for Cleveland, where he notched 12 tackles over 27 contests up until 2022.

The six-foot, 222-pounder began the 2023 season with the Atlanta Falcons, who released him in November. Davis was scooped up by the Panthers a week later and played each of his 143 snaps for them on special teams.

Panthers officially re-sign RB/KR Raheem Blackshear

The Panthers’ signing of RB Raheem Blackshear became official on Thursday.

Raheem Blackshear is all set for 2024.

Per the NFL transaction wire, the Carolina Panthers officially re-signed the 25-year-old running back on Thursday. The team previously tendered a contract to Blackshear, who entered the offseason as an exclusive rights free agent.

Blackshear was signed off the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad by the Panthers in September of 2022. He went on to play in 13 games during his rookie campaign—where he ran for 77 yards and three touchdowns while reeling in 10 passes for 93 yards.

Carolina has utilized Blackshear as their primary kick returner for the past two seasons. He’s fielded 35 total attempts for an average of 26.9 yards.

Given the newly-passed kickoff rules, Blackshear’s ability on special teams should prove to be even more valuable to the Panthers. The hybrid kickoff, which was approved by a vote of 29-3 at this past week’s Annual League Meeting, is expected to increase the amount of returns by 30 to 40 percent from the 2023 season.

The Panthers currently have 26 players slated for free agency in 2024.

So, let’s take an updated look at the team’s pending 2024 free agents.

4 Panthers receive All-Pro votes for 2023 season

Four Panthers players got some recognition on this year’s All-Pro ballots.

The Carolina Panthers didn’t have a single player land on either of the Associated Press’ 2023 All-Pro teams. But they did have a handful who garnered a bit of recognition.

This year’s results showed that four Panthers received at least one vote from the panel of 50 national media members. The players who got some love include defensive tackle Derrick Brown, running back Raheem Blackshear, wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette and long snapper JJ Jansen.

Despite setting a new single-season record for most tackles by a defensive lineman (103), Brown finished sixth amongst all interior defenders—a group led by Los Angeles’ Aaron Donald and Kansas City’s Chris Jones. The fourth-year wrecking ball, who also led his peers in stops (53) and run stop win rate (47 percent), received one first-place vote.

Blackshear and Smith-Marsette were considered for their production on special teams. Blackshear, who got two second-place votes as a kick returner, averaged 26.9 yards per attempt. Smith-Marsette, the owner of two first-place votes as a punt returner, fielded a league-high 37 tries with one touchdown.

Top takeaways from Panthers’ snap counts in Week 8 win over Texans

The Panthers let their 2023 draft class cook in the Week 8 win over the Texans.

It took long enough, but the Carolina Panthers finally notched their first win of the season on Sunday. Oh, and they also might’ve finally given us a little glimpse into the future.

Here are the top takeaways from Week 8’s snap counts:

Chuba Hubbard expected to get ‘bulk of the carries’ for Panthers in Week 6

With Miles Sanders having been ruled out, Panthers HC Frank Reich said he expects Chuba Hubbard to be the lead dog in Week 6.

The Carolina Panthers will be looking for the next dog up out of their backfield on Sunday.

As confirmed by head coach Frank Reich this afternoon, starting running back Miles Sanders has been ruled out of the team’s Week 6 matchup against the Miami Dolphins with a shoulder injury. He was asked if backup Chuba Hubbard would be in his place.

“We’ll do it by committee, but Chuba will get the bulk of the carries. More than likely get the bulk of the carries,” Reich said. “It’ll be hot down there. So, we’ll have to rotate through. Obviously, you hope we get it goin’ and we’re movin’ the ball. You run 60 to 70 plays a game, so those guys will all get some work. But I would think Chuba would be the lead dog.”

Reich was then asked about what he’s liked from the third-year back thus far.

“Just a downhill runner,” he replied. “Physical runner. Good contact balance. Good yards after contact. Competitive. Tough.”

Hubbard, Carolina’s leading rusher during his rookie campaign in 2021, has run for 154 yards on 35 totes this season. That work has been good enough for an average of 4.4 yards per attempt.

Reich also said that he expects Raheem Blackshear, who has been a healthy scratch over the last four games, to be active.
