Eagles’ 2022 training camp preview: Quarterback

Jalen Hurts is entrenched as the starter, but depending on how things shake out in 2022, that development could quickly change.

Philadelphia has two first-round picks, but the laws of team building state that a championship roster must be sculpted around the quarterback, likely forcing Howie Roseman to evaluate his third-year passer critically.

As training camp approaches, we’ll preview every position on the Eagles roster, starting with the most important position in all sports.

Projecting the 10 toughest cuts for the Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster

The Eagles are preparing to enter their second season under head coach Nick Sirianni, and after making the playoffs at 9-8 in 2021, Philadelphia will look to overtake Dallas in the NFC East.

The Birds added versatility and dynamic playmaking on both sides of the ball, after trading for wide receiver A.J. Brown and signing linebacker Haason Reddick and cornerback James Bradberry.

Several roster spots are already locked up, but Philadelphia has a deep roster and with competition set to be intense, there could be some tough decisions made prior to Week 1 of the 2022 regular season.

With the Eagles set to return for camp later this month, here’s a look at a prediction for the ten toughest and likely final cuts.

The Eagles have several looming camp battles to watch, but none more intense than at the wide receiver position.

Philadelphia carried five wide receivers on the initial 53-man roster for 2021, and with J.J. Arcega-Whiteside switching to tight end, the numbers could look similar in 2022.

The Eagles acquired A.J. Brown from the Titans in a blockbuster draft night trade, and also signed Zach Pascal away from the Colts in free agency.

The team currently has 12 wide receivers on the 90-man roster and that number will be reduced drastically by Week one of the regular season.

With training camp less than a month away, we’ll project the 53-man roster in 2022 at wide receiver.

The Eagles are currently in the midst of a massive overhaul of their front office and scouting departments, and that could be due to the lack of star power currently on the roster.

Philadelphia currently has 43 players on the roster under 25 years of age, but only 11 are starters or have the potential to be Pro Bowlers in the near future.

PFF annually ranks the top players on the roster 25 or under, and the Eagles haven’t had a player come close to landing on the list since Carson Wentz during his 2017 season that saw Philadelphia win a Super Bowl and the quarterback nearly win MVP.

In 2020 and 2021, the Eagles had no players make the list, and even after adding some big names to the roster via the draft and free agency, , 2022 will be the third straight year that the Birds are shut out of the list.

49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa was No. 1 on the list, followed by Justin Herbert (Chargers), Jonathan Taylor (Colts), Tristan Wirfs (Bucs), and almost Eagles 2020 pick Justin Jefferson (Vikings) to round out the top five.

Other familiar names like Micah Parsons, Ja’Marr Chase, DK Metcalf, Chase Young, CeeDee Lamb, Tee Higgins, Patrick Surtain II, Kyle Pitts, and Trevon Diggs rounded out the top-25.

The Eagles have a nice stock of young talent now on the roster and names like Jalen Hurts, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, A.J. Brown, Landon Dickerson, and DeVonta Smith should make the list in 2023.
