Eagles’ 2022 training camp preview: Quarterback

Philadelphia Eagles’ 2022 training camp preview: Quarterback is the position to watch as Jalen Hurts looks to cement himself as the franchise signal-caller for years to come

Jalen Hurts is entrenched as the starter, but depending on how things shake out in 2022, that development could quickly change.

Philadelphia has two first-round picks, but the laws of team building state that a championship roster must be sculpted around the quarterback, likely forcing Howie Roseman to evaluate his third-year passer critically.

As training camp approaches, we’ll preview every position on the Eagles roster, starting with the most important position in all sports.

Ranking the Eagles’ rookies by potential impact in 2022

Ranking the Philadelphia Eagles rookies by potential impact in 2022

The Eagles finished the 2022 NFL draft with five players selected, and followed that up by signing 12 undrafted free agents to deals before their initial rookie minicamp.

Philadelphia’s five-man class offers the potential for two immediate starters on defense, and three key backups at interior offensive line, edge rusher, and tight end.

The 12-man undrafted free agent class offers the potential for key contributors at running back, cornerback, and edge rusher as well, but time will tell and the team won’t be together again until the start of training camp on July, 26.

With the Eagles on an extended break, here’s a ranking of Philadelphia’s rookies by potential impact in 2022.

Eagles news: Examining the most pressing needs for Philadelphia in the first round?

Eagles news: What are the top priority and most pressing concerns for Philadelphia in the first round?

The Eagles have several needs at multiple key positions, but one local insider with insight into the franchise believes they’ll target two positions early on.

Derrick Gunn has been plugged into the NovaCare Complex for years and on a recent episode of Sports Take Live, the veteran NFL reporter says Philadelphia’s top two priorities are at the wide receiver and edge rusher positions.

Adding another dynamic wide receiver to the roster is pertinent for the development of quarterback Jalen Hurts, and it’ll help free up DeVonta Smith to excel against the opposition’s No. 2 cornerback at times.

Philadelphia loves to pressure and rush the quarterback organically, and adding a top-tier edge rusher would allow Jonathan Gannon the chance to create pressure without blitzing.

Names like Kayvon Thibodeaux, Jameson Williams, Jermaine Johnson, and Garrett Wilson are players to watch if the Eagles look to trade up for a potential Can’t-miss prospect.

Full 7-round Eagles mock draft post-blockbuster trade with the Saints

2022 NFL draft: Philadelphia Eagles add more talent on defense in full seven-round mock post blockbuster trade with the New Orleans Saints

The Eagles once again shook up the NFL draft boards after a blockbuster trade that saw general manager Howie Roseman trade pick No. 16, No. 19, and No. 194 to the Saints for pick No. 18, No. 101, No. 237, a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 second-rounder as well.

Philadelphia now has two first-round picks in 2022, an extra third-round picks in 2022, along with pushing a first-round pick back to 2023 and also accumulating an extra second-round pick in 2022.

With the moves made, here’s an updated Eagles-only seven-round mock draft via Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator, that’ll likely see the Birds still land players that were on their board.

2022 NFL draft: Eagles add more dynamic talent on defense in full seven-round mock

2022 NFL draft: Philadelphia Eagles add more dynamic talent on defense in full seven-round mock

The NFL’s official league year got off to a roaring start as the quest for a Super Bowl in 2022 is underway for all 32 NFL teams.

The Eagles just completed the first two weeks of an intriguing offseason that started off strong with free agency,  features three-first round picks, valuable salary-cap space, and several different routes the franchise can choose to follow.

With Jalen Hurts as the quarterback for at least the next calendar year, Philadelphia has chosen to build around the quarterback, and they still could push a first-round pick back to 2023 where the quarterback class will be much more talented.

It’ll be an interesting lead-up to April’s NFL draft and we’re adding to the fun with our fifth full seven-round mock draft 5.0, this time, after the first wave of free agency.

In this seven-round mock draft using Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator, we again avoided making any trades in this version, choosing to fully restock a roster that has holes on both sides of the ball, utilizing seven of the 10 picks on high-profile and highly versatile defensive players.

Jalen Hurts is already recruiting a potential 2023 free agent WR to Eagles

Jalen Hurts recruits 2023 free agent and Titans WR A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles on Instagram

The Eagles were quiet on the wide receiver front in NFL free agency and if the team doesn’t add a wide receiver in the draft, then the 2023 offseason could provide an opportunity to add a dynamic playmaker.

A.J. Brown is looking for a new deal from the Titans, as the former second-round pick and talented wide receiver is scheduled to make $3.986 million this season in the final year of his rookie contract.

The Titans have talked about keeping Brown around long-term, but recently, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts playfully tried to recruit the soon-to-be free agent, but Brown was having none of it.

Hurts and Brown have a close relationship and the Eagles quarterback had previously said this about the Titans star.

“I tried to recruit him to Alabama. We’ve been very close ever since. He’s one of my best friends.”

Drafted by the Titans in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss, Brown had 52 catches for 1,051 yards and 8 touchdowns as a rookie.

In 2020, Brown logged 70 catches for 1,075 yards and 11 touchdowns but saw his numbers drop in 2021, after the addition of Julio Jones.

In 2021, Brown logged 63 catches for 869-yards and 5 touchdowns in 13 games.

Daniel Jeremiah on the instant impact guys Eagles can land with 3 first-round picks

NFL Draft 2022: Daniel Jeremiah on how the Philadelphia Eagles could use their 3 first-round picks

The Eagles are among seven teams with multiple first-round picks in the NFL draft, and they’re the only team with three selections, giving Howie Roseman the perfect opportunity to add dynamic players to the roster.

During a guest spot on the Takeoff Podcast with John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Jeremiah says he believes the Eagles can get a starting wide receiver and another starting edge rusher with their three first-round picks.

Philadelphia added Haason Reddick to the roster and the expectation is that he’ll rush from multiple positions while being listed as a linebacker.

The Eagles could still add Purdue’s George Karlaftis, FSU’s Jermaine Johnson, or Travon Walker at the edge rusher position, while Ohio State’s Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, or Arkansas’s Treylon Burks are potential wide receiver additions.
