4 players worked out for the Broncos on Tuesday, 1 signed

The Broncos worked out four players on Tuesday and signed tight end Johnny Lumpkin to the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos brought in four players for workouts on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

The Broncos worked out two running backs — Jason Huntley and Aaron Shampklin — and two tight ends — Thomas Greaney and Johnny Lumpkin — at their Centura Health Training Center.

Huntley (5-9, 195 pounds) entered the league as a fifth-round pick out of New Mexico State with the Detroit Lions in 2020. After being cut by the Lions, Huntley played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2020-2021, appearing in six games. He later spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts from 2022-2023.

Shampklin (5-11, 195 pounds) spent time with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Harvard in 2022. He went on to spend time with the Indianapolis Colts and the USFL’s Houston Gamblers before a stint with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Greaney (6-5, 255 pounds) signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in May. He played college football for the Albany Great Danes, an FCS program in New York.

Lumpkin (6-6, 268 pounds) signed with the New England Patriots as a college free agent out of Louisiana this spring. He later spent time with the Colts. At the time of publication, only Lumpkin has signed (to the practice squad).

The three other players are likely candidates for reserve/future contracts with the Broncos following the concussion of the 2023 season.

Dolphins work out 7 players on Tuesday

Miami worked out 7 before signing 1.

After the Miami Dolphins officially lost running back Darrynton Evans from their practice squad on Monday, they had an open spot that they needed to fill.

With that knowledge, the Dolphins held workouts on Tuesday that included seven players before they signed running back Jake Funk to their practice squad.

While they’ve already made the signing, it may be worth it to get familiar with those who Miami opted not to sign on Tuesday.

Colts make practice squad moves

The Colts made some practice squad moves Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts signed three players to the practice squad and released three players from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Incoming to the practice squad are three players the Colts worked out Monday following their Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Here’s a look at the moves the Colts made to the practice squad Tuesday:

Signed

  • C Jack Anderson
  • RB Tyler Goodson
  • TE Jordan Murray

Released

  • RB Jason Huntley
  • WR Mike Strachan
  • TE Johnny Lumpkin

The Colts still likely need to find some depth at wide receiver and running back, especially with the latter position since Evan Hull is expected to miss time due to a knee injury.

Colts sign 17 players to the practice squad

Here’s a look at the initial practice squad for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts have made their initial roster cuts to get down to 53 players, and now they’ve filled out their practice squad.

The team announced Wednesday that they signed 16 players to the practice squad, and it was reported by Jordan Schultz of The Score that they added an extra player.

It should be noted that the Colts essentially have 17 spots because Marcel Dabo gives the team a roster exemption as a part of the International Player Pathway Program.

Here are the specifics of the practice squad:

  • 16 players
  • Up to 10 players with two or fewer accrued seasons
  • Up to six veterans (no limit on how many years in the league)
  • Practice squad players may be elevated for gamedays a maximum of three times in a season

There will be constant movement on the practice squad throughout the season, but this is what the initial group looks like.

Here’s a look at the Colts initial practice squad:

Colts waive RB Jason Huntley, LB Liam Anderson

The Colts are waiving RB Jason Huntley and LB Liam Anderson.

The Indianapolis Colts waived running back Jason Huntley and linebacker Liam Anderson ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for roster cuts, first reported by Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star.

Huntley joined the Colts backfield during training camp after Zack Moss went down with a broken arm. He averaged just 1.9 yards per carry in three preseason games.

Anderson joined the Colts this offseason as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Holy Cross. The team hopes to sign him to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The Colts have until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to finalize their initial 53-man roster. You can stay up to date with the latest moves via our tracker.

Colts sign RB Jason Huntley, TE Ricky Seals-Jones

The Colts made some roster moves Wednesday.

The Indianapolis Colts signed free-agent running back Jason Huntley and tight end Ricky Seals-Jones and waive-injured tight end La’Michael Pettway and safety Michael Tutsie, the team announced Wednesday.

After bringing in Kareem Hunt for a visit only for the free agent to leave without a contract, the Colts turned to another potential depth piece in the backfield in the form of Huntley.

Huntley, 25, was a fifth-round pick with the Detroit Lions out of New Mexico State. He didn’t make the final roster cuts during his rookie season and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles where he spent two seasons (2020-2021). He also spent the 2022 season on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, and he was on the 2023 offseason roster before being released Aug. 1.

Seals-Jones, 28, entered the league as an undrafted free-agent rookie in 2017, spending two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals (2017-2018). He’s also spent time with the Cleveland Browns (2019), Kansas City Chiefs (2020), Washington Football Team (2021).

He spent the 2022 offseason with the New York Giants before missing the entire season due to a toe injury.

The two players waived in Pettway and Tutsie will revert to the injured reserve list if they clear waivers.

Eagles salary cap: Breaking down Philadelphia’s $54 million in dead money

With the 2023 NFL offseason almost complete and training camps looming we’re breaking down the Philadelphia Eagles’ $54 million in dead cap space

The NFL’s June 1 date is just 24 hours away, and with that you can expect some trades, shocking releases and team salary caps impacted by dead money going on or off the books.

So what is dead cap?

Any future, unpaid, guaranteed salary or bonus or any already paid signing bonus that hasn’t yet been allocated to the salary cap becomes the responsibility of the team in the event of a release.

The salary cap will increase to $224.8 million for the 2023 season.

For some teams, the slight increase in cap space provides a little breathing room to retain players on expiring deals or acquire talent that could help them succeed in the upcoming season.

With OTAs underway, we’re breaking down the Eagles $54 million in dead cap space, fourth among all NFL teams.

Eagles salary cap: Breaking down Philadelphia’s NFL leading $46 million in dead money

With the 2023 NFL offseason underway and the new league year fast approaching, we’re breaking down the Philadelphia Eagles’ $46 million in dead cap space

The NFL offseason is set to officially get underway on March 15, as Philadelphia has 18 players who will hit the open market and one ERFA who’ll be looking to return in some compacity.

Miles Sanders had a Pro Bowl season but could find big money elsewhere, while decisions will need to be made about 8 key contributors on defense.

Players like James BradberryKyzir White, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Javon Hargrave will look for big paydays.

Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire took a look at the teams that owe the most to least dead money ahead of free agency and Philadelphia heads the list, while the Chiefs owe the list according to salary cap figures via Over The Cap.

Former Eagles Renell Wren, Jason Huntley sign to the Steelers practice squad

Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Renell Wren and running back Jason Huntley sign to the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad

The Eagles will host the Steelers at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 8 of the 2022 season, and two former Birds could make a return.

Pittsburgh just announced that defensive tackle Renell Wren and running back Jason Huntley have both been signed to the Steelers practice squad ahead of the season opener.

Huntley has 18 career carries for 70 yards and one reception for no yards.

In 2021 he had 13 carries for 51 yards and was initially drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of New Mexico State.

Wren signed with the Eagles this offseason after spending most of the 2021 season on the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad and was called up for the season finale against the Cleveland Browns. The Bengals drafted Wren in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Steelers now have 13 players on their practice squad, with three spots remaining.
