One Longhorn who needs to step up in 2020 according to 247Sports

247Sports named their one player who needs to step up in 2020. For the Longhorns it comes from the wide receivers group.

The Texas Longhorns return one of the most productive teams in the Big 12 in 2020. However, they do have plenty of questions especially on the offensive side of the ball. While they do have talent available, it remains unclear who will step up in 2020 for this football team. If the Longhorns do indeed make a run at the Big 12 title they will need a few players to step up on both sides of the ball. According to 247Sports, there is one player on offense who needs to step up the most.

247Sports writer Dean Straka states:

Texas fans saw what Eagles was capable of accomplishing during his sophomore year on the Forty Acres after only registering one catch as freshman in 2018, but 2020 will bring an entirely new set of expectations for the former four-star prospect. With Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson — the Longhorns’ leading two receivers from 2019 — both now graduated, Eagles finds himself standing as arguably the top target for Sam Ehlinger to work with in 2020 as the Longhorns look to rebound from an 8-5 finish that was far short of meeting expectations a year ago. Eagles’ most productive game of 2019 his best game of the season in Week 2 in a 45-38 loss to eventual national champion LSU (five catches for 116 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown strike). With new Texas offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich setting the expectation of around 45 points per game in order for the Longhorns to compete, prepare to see plenty of passes from Ehlinger headed in Eagles’ direction this fall.

Ehlinger has a tall task ahead of him this upcoming season, steer the Longhorns towards the top of the conference without his top two receiver of the past few season. Along with Eagles, Jordan Whittington, Jake Smith and newcomer Tarik Black are all expected to be in the mix. For the team to hit the level of expectation that Yurcich has laid out, they will all need to do their part.

Behind Ehlinger in the backfield Keaontay Ingram, Roschon Johnson and newcomer Bijan Robinson should help lighten the load. Ingram and Johnson are the known commodity, while Robinson is the wildcard. The best running back in Arizona high school history should be a mainstay on the offense for the next three seasons. If he is able to deliver what many think he can, the offense should be a lethal one.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 7 Tarik Black

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at senior WR Tarik Black.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at senior wide receiver Tarik Black.

Tarik Black, Wide receiver

Junfu Han, Detroit Free Press, Detroit Free Press

Height: 6-3 / Weight: 215

Class: Senior

Hometown: Hamden, Conn.

High School: Cheshire Academy

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 194 overall / No. 28 position / No. 1 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 76 overall / No. 11 position / No. 1 in-state

Analysis: Losing Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson is going to hurt Texas this season but graduate transfer Tarik Black should help the losses. Coming from Michigan, the wide receiver has underperformed during his time in Ann Arbor thanks to underwhelming quarterback play.

Black’s junior year was disappointing, only having 25 catches for 323 yards and a touchdown. After being a four-star prospect out of high school and the top player in the state of Connecticut, Black has not reached his potential quite yet.

Hopefully, Sam Ehlinger is able to unlock his ability during the 2020 season. Texas was in desperate need of reinforcements at the wide receiver position. With Black coming down to Austin, Mike Yurich should have an experienced receiver at his disposal for the next two seasons.

10 potential candidates to become the next star for Texas football

With Sam Ehlinger graduating in May, Texas needs a new face of the program. Here are 10 potential candidates to become the next star for UT:

Right now, the star and face of Texas football is senior Sam Ehlinger. Ever since his freshman year for the Longhorns, the quarterback has led the team by example, both on and off the field.

With the Austin native graduating in May 2021, Tom Herman’s team is going to need a new star to be the face of the program. While being a leader is helpful, their production on the field needs to become the priority.

Texas has promising players on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. All big named recruits coming out of high school, their level of success will be determined by the coaching staff throughout the next couple of years. If expectations are met, the Longhorns will field a roster full of future NFL talent.

Texas Football: Tarik Black and Jahdae Barron officially added

The Texas Longhorns have officially added Michigan transfer Tarik Black and former Baylor signee Jahdae Barron to the 2020 roster.

It is official, the Texas Longhorns have added Tarik Black and Jahdae Barron to the 2020 roster. Tarik Black was a player that was rumored to receive interest from Tom Herman’s staff once he entered the transfer portal. The school announced on Monday that he is officially on the roster.

The addition of Black comes as no surprise given that the team lacks experience at the wide receiver position. Especially after Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson’s departures to the NFL. Brennan Eagles and Jake Smith have some experience at wide out and now add Tarik Black. Black was a highly touted wide receiver coming out of Connecticut but never really gained any kind of traction in Ann Arbor while playing for Michigan. He dealt with injuries and spotty quarterback play while a member of the Wolverines.

Last season was Black’s best with 25 receptions (40 in his career), 323 yards receiving and one touchdown. Those numbers won’t blow you away but he brings experience to a young group. He wore number seven up north and will likely wear it again for the University of Texas. That number is vacant on the offensive side of the ball and the graphic provided by UT shows him the seven jersey so that feels like a done deal. Along with Black, Smith, Eagles and Whittington that gives new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich some toys to play with.

On the defensive side of the ball, Texas officially welcomes Jahdae Barron to the Longhorns family. Barron originally committed and signed to play for the Baylor Bears but the sudden departure by then head coach Matt Rhule opened the door for Texas. Barron requested to be released from his NLI and that is where Texas got involved.

“Jahdae is a highly-regarded prospect and talented young man who is a great addition to our 2020 signing class,” Herman said. “He’s a local player from Pflugerville who we’ve followed closely for a long time and is fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing for Texas.” -Tom Herman via Jeff Howe on 247 Sports

Possesses the requisite corner build with adequate height and frame potential relative to the position. Plays smoothly and instinctive in coverage. Shows good ball skills for a DB. Flashes encouraging reactive quickness. Consistently stays in-phase with receivers while playing off coverage. No verified testing times, but owns a 10.95 100-meter time. Good long speed. Natural corner but could potentially provide position flexibility in college. Willing tackler with solid numbers in that department, but can improve technique and consistency. Needs to continue adding bulk and strength to combat bigger opponents in college. One of the top 2020 corners in Texas who could become multi-year starter with NFL Draft potential. – Gabe Brooks of 247 Sports

The addition of Barron brings depth to the position of cornerback and an eventual starter in the Chris Ash defense. It is hard to imagine with no spring football and the uncertainty surrounding when they will action get on the field to think otherwise. His addition is just another solid get by the staff for the 2020 recruiting class.

Tarik Black announces transfer destination

The former Michigan wideout is heading to the Big 12 to finish his college career.

While it may have seemed a little dubious via his Twitter posting, his Instagram post made it crystal clear.

It was rumored that former Michigan receiver Tarik Black — who announced following the 2019 regular season that he would seek a transfer for his final two seasons — would likely end up at Boston College, near his native Connecticut. It turns out, however, that Black had bigger plans.

Taking to both Twitter and Instagram, Black announced that he’s transferring to Texas to continue his college career.

[lawrence-related id=23842,23834,23827,23810]

As mentioned, he’ll have two years left of eligibility, as he got a medical redshirt for his senior season, and played the last two years for Michigan.

It’s not yet known whether or not he’ll be eligible immediately to play in Austin, but as of current, there’s a proposed NCAA rule change that would allow players a one-time transfer exception, regardless of circumstances.

At Michigan, Black played in 17 games and had 40 receptions for 507 yards and two touchdowns.

Black not only broke his foot in the third game of his college career, but he broke his other foot the following year in fall camp. However, he returned to the lineup against Michigan State a little more than halfway through the season. However, he didn’t get his second touchdown until 2019.

Michigan wide receiver Tarik Black heading to Austin

Michigan Wolverines’ wide receiver Tarik Black will transfer to the University of Texas.

Michigan wide receiver Tarik Black was a player that the Texas Longhorns were reportedly interested in. After losing Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay there  were a lot of questions surrounding the group. Who would start and replace the production by this duo? Apparently Black could be one of those answers.

Tarik Black will be heading to Austin to continue his football playing career. Previously 247 had his transfer crystal ball at 100 percent to Boston College. Black only caught 25 passes for 323 yards and one score in 2019. Mostly a product of poor quarterback play. The former four-star recruit provides the Longhorns with a little more experience at the position.

Texas is reportedly interested in Michigan’s Tarik Black

According to Brian Dohn of 247, the Texas Longhorns have interest in Michigan grad transfer Tarik Black to help at wide receiver.

For the Texas Longhorns offense in 2020, they are losing plenty of experience at wide receiver with their top two receivers leaving for the NFL. The top names to remain on the roster are Jake Smith and Brennan Eagles who provided six touchdowns a piece and a combined for 796 yards in 2019. There is also Malcolm Epps who could split time at receiver and tight end for the Longhorns in 2020.

So should the Longhorns address their wide receiver issues through the transfer portal? According to Brian Dohn of 247, the Longhorns are interested in Michigan grad transfer Tarik Black. His numbers weren’t exactly eye popping in 2019. He played in 11 games for the first time in his college career with 25 receptions for 323 yards and one score.

The former four-star wide receiver never seemed to put it all together in Ann Arbor but a change of scenery and a new voice in his ear could just be what the doctor ordered. The Longhorns obviously like receivers with size that they can use in matchups against smaller defenders and Black fits that to a “T”, The 6’3″ wide receiver could fit right in and bring experience to a relatively young wide receiver group.

There are obviously concerns with his inability to put everything together at the Big House but Texas should kick the tires on a potential prospect who can lock down the spot as an outside wide receiver.

Outgoing transfer Tarik Black no longer with Michigan, won’t play in bowl game

The former Wolverines star’s Michigan career is done for good.

[jwplayer 8xPQIEAt-XNcErKyb]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. —  It was a career that had a lot of promise in Ann Arbor, but now it’s over.

Now former Michigan wide receiver Tarik Black had both his freshman and sophomore seasons derailed with fractured bones in either foot, and while he returned healthy in 2019, he never became the focal point of the offense as he was when he first arrived on campus.

With 25 receptions for 323 yards and a touchdown, many anticipated a bigger year for Black, but with the end of the regular season also comes the end of his Michigan career, as he announced earlier this month that he has submitted his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

Being in the portal doesn’t necessarily indicate that a career at said institution is completely done — not until they select the next school of choice and sign. But Michigan tight end Nick Eubanks confirmed that he’s no longer with the team and won’t play in the VRBO Citrus Bowl.

Something he confirmed with a heavy heart given his relationship with him.

“He’s gone,” Eubanks said. “Personally, between me and him, I kinda feel sad about it. That’s somebody I surrounded myself with in terms of talking to him every day. Especially with him going through injuries and stuff like that. Me and him shared a bond, too. I was kinda sad about it when he announced it.”

Black finishes his Michigan career with 40 receptions for 507 yards and two touchdowns, each of his scores being in the season openers of 2017 and 2019.

As of now, the full complement of the Wolverines team, aside from Black, is practicing with full intentions to play in the Jan. 1 VRBO Citrus Bowl.
