Arguably the worst part of sports is the business side of things which unfortunately former Longhorn receiver Brennan Eagles experienced on Tuesday after being cut by the Dallas Cowboys.

Eagles, who decided to forgo his senior season, was a very productive receiver during his time as a Longhorn. After playing in just one game his freshman year where he registered one catch, Eagles burst onto the seen as a sophomore.

During his sophomore season, the 6-foot-4 playmaker was tied for second in receieving touchdowns with six, and third on the team in yards behind two other Longhorns currently in the NFL, Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay. He would go on to continue that success during his junior season, as he was second on the team in catches, second in receieving yards, and second in touchdowns.

Eagles showed promise, and likely could have benefited from using his last year of college eligibility, but decided to test the draft waters. He would eventually go undrafted in the 2021 NFL draft, but would be signed as undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys. There were not many opportunities to begin with for Eagles on the Cowboys, as they are very deep at the wide receiver position, and in his lone preseason game, Eagles did not register a catch.

It was announced via Twitter on Tuesday that Eagles was among the Cowboys’ first cuts that saw the roster go from 90 to 85.

Eagles very well might get picked up in the future by another team as a practice squad member, or fill in for an injured player.

Roster Moves: Cowboys release 3 players, move 2 to injured list

Entering the second full week of preseason football, all NFL teams have to move their active roster from 90 players down to 85. In Dallas, a multitude of players were performing well in both training camp and preseason playing time, earning a chance to compete for a spot on the 53-man roster come August 31.

On Tuesday, the Cowboys announced the five moves, with three players being released and a pair moving to the injured reserve so Dallas can keep a hold of them.

Reggie Robinson and Sewo Olonilua will stay in the house with the Cowboys using the injured reserve as a way to hold onto them this season and potentially give them a spot on the roster in 2022. Robinson has been a project in Dallas since being drafted last year in the fourth round and the staff hopes he can become a serviceable player before his rookie deal is up. Olonilua spent time on the active roster last year but only played on special teams.

After this move, Dallas continues to trim down their roster with some surprises making it past the first cut. The next roster cut comes on August 24, where the Cowboys will have to cut another five players who are currently on the active roster.

Brennan Eagles’ big-bodied frame could lead to niche role in Cowboys offense

The Dallas Cowboys brought in 4 UDFA receivers this draft to compete for the backend of the roster. Here’s what Eagles brings to the table in his quest to make the 53-man roster.

Is there any room at the inn for another receiver in Dallas? That’s got to be the thought process for a handful of young pass catchers currently on the Cowboys’ 90-man offseason roster. Dallas has perhaps the most loaded WR corps in the league in one of the most potent offenses in the league. So much so, the club almost completely ignored the offense during the three-day draft. They did select Stanford WR Simi Fehoko in the fourth round, however.

That selection makes the climb even more difficult for the collection of UDFA wideouts the team added that Saturday night in late April. Among the four signed was Texas Longhorns wideout Brennan Eagles. Eagles projects as a practice squad candidate who’s best skillset seems to be how he’d utilize his big-body size as a red-zone threat or a possession receiver who could move the chains.

Our profile countdown continues with No. 83, WR Brennan Eagles.

Texas WR Brennan Eagles signs with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent

Texas Longhorns wide receiver Brennan Eagles goes undrafted and signs with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.

Texas Longhorns wide receiver Brennan Eagles went undrafted in the 2021 NFL draft. However, he didn’t have to wait long before finding a team to sign with. Eagles was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys.

Eagles is a 6-foot-4, 229-pound receiver who declared for the draft a year early despite criticisms he wasn’t ready. He spent three seasons at Texas, making a much larger impact in his final two where he caught 60 catches for 991 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Eagles has plenty of size, but he was considered a raw route runner who won most of his catches by being a better one-on-one receiver who overpowered Big 12 cornerbacks.

Eagles will look to become the next member of the Texas Longhorns to join the Cowboys, alongside Conner Williams on the offensive side of the ball, in a crowded and talented receiving group that features Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb.

NFL Draft: Todd McShay’s final top 350 prospects, seven Texas players included

NFL draft analyst Todd McShay released the final edition of his top 350 draft prospects and seven Texas Longhorns were included.

Earlier this month, ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. projected that a pair of Texas Longhorns would land in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. It’s understandable that most of the attention has been centered around Samuel Cosmi and Joseph Ossai as they have starting potential at the next level.

His partner in the same building, fellow ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay, released his final rankings of the top 350 prospects in this draft class.

McShay is a noted draft analyst and has had a good track record of ranking the players properly where they end up going.

There are seven of the eight Texas draft prospects listed and the notable absence is defensive back Chris Brown.

Take a look at where the other former Longhorns rank among their peers according to McShay’s top 350:

Opinion: Brennan Eagles should switch positions at the pro level

Texas Longhorns receiver, and 2021 NFL Draft participant Brennan Eagles, might need to change positions in the NFL.

Brennan Eagles shocked everyone when he declared for the 2021 NFL Draft. It seemed to be a general agreement that he was raw and would have benefited from coming back for at least one more year.

The 6-4, 230-pound wide receiver definitely has luring size that scouts and teams love, plus his strong hands, body control, and ball skills saw him rarely drop a pass.

He might not create the separation you want from a receiver, but his ability to go up and get the ball, especially in one-on-one situations, is intriguing.

However, he’s still young and raw. Eagles is not a very crisp route runner and just being oversized won’t win every down in the NFL that it would in college.

If he’s drafted, or likely taken as an undrafted free agent, his best bet might actually do what players like Darren Waller, Tyrone Swoopes, Logan Thomas and Ricky Seales-Jones did before him: change positions.

With proper coaching, it’s not too hard to imagine Brennan Eagles as a tight end. He’s already got the build and ball skills teams want from today’s tight ends.

It might take him a year or two but he would need to better develop as a blocker. Even if he’s not used as a traditional in-line tight end, he’s still lagging as a blocker even at wide receiver.

The hard truth for Eagles is that he’s going into a very deep receiver draft. Even if he does get drafted, it won’t be until the end of day three and it will be used as a flyer pick. As raw as he is, he might be a candidate for the practice squad in year one.

However, if a team can see where he excels and commit him to being a tight end similar to Jimmy Graham or Harrison Bryant by honing on what he does well, coupled with developing his blocking down the line, this could be what makes Eagles not only a draft steal, but what leads to a tenured career in the league.
