Former Texas TE Malcolm Epps enters the transfer portal

Malcolm Epps is back in the transfer portal.

Former Texas tight end Malcolm Epps is back in the NCAA transfer portal.

Epps spent his first three seasons at Texas before transferring to USC in 2021. On3’s Matt Zenitz reports Epps is going to look for a third school as a graduate transfer to spend his final season of eligibility.

Epps has hauled in 37 passes for 483 yards and seven touchdowns during his college career. His 6-foot-7 frame makes Epps a capable red zone target and a mismatch for most defensive backs. Epps will bring five seasons of major college football experience at two blue blood programs to his next school of choice.

Expect another flow of transfers to enter the portal during the spring semester. Some excellent players in college football are going to be available again in the next few months.

National Transfer Tracker: notable names as the football portal gains over 1,000 players

The transfer portal is filling up. Keep track of notable prospects every week. A new name in the portal: Arizona State QB Emory Jones.

Hello! It’s transfer portal season for the 2022-2023 college football offseason.

The new transfer portal window officially opens Monday, and that hasn’t stopped players from announcing their plans to leave their schools ahead of the first day they can enter the portal. We saw a lot of transfer announcements over the weekend, which means it’s time to give you our national transfer tracker. This isn’t a list of players who have decided to transfer to USC, though you can be assured that Lincoln Riley has his eye on a lot of prospects. It’s simply a partial list of players who have already stated their intent to leave their current school and play elsewhere.

Last year, more than 3,000 FBS players entered the portal, which was open year-round. Quarterbacks Caleb Williams (USC), Quinn Ewers (Texas), Bo Nix(Oregon), and Spencer Rattler (South Carolina) were among the prominent transfers who made an immediate impact at their new schools.

Here’s an early look at the transfers on the open market:

Johns Hopkins graduate transfer given opportunity at Notre Dame

An interesting name that could work out well for the Irish

The Irish are looking to bolster their roster via the transfer portal and an unknown name has popped up today. Graduate transfer wide receiver Harrison Wellmann tweeted early this evening that he has been offered a spot on the Irish football team.

At six-feet and 180-pounds, Wellmann is an ideal candidate for a slot receiver and has put up very impressive numbers in his time at Hopkins. For his career he has 183 receptions for 2,276-yards and 34 touchdowns. That was in just three seasons as the 2020 Ivy League campaign was not played due to COVID-19. Wellman averaged over 100-yards per game in his last two full seasons.

It seems like Wellman doesn’t have just the Notre Dame coaching staff’s attention. This tweet by another transfer, Brandon Joseph, seems like the former Hopkins receiver might be a bit underrated.

Report: LSU linebacker Ray Thornton transfers to Texas

Steve Sarkisian has made his first move in the transfer portal. According to IT, LSU grad transfer Ray Thornton will transfer to Texas.

Steve Sarkisian has made his first move in the transfer portal as the head coach at Texas.

According to Inside Texas, LSU graduate transfer Ray Thornton will be heading back to his home state to play for the Longhorns. Listed as an outside linebacker on the Tigers’ official website, he has experience at middle linebacker as well under defensive coordinator Bo Pelini.

Thornton will be entering his sixth season playing college football. After redshirting during his freshman season in 2016, the former four-star recruit has played in 32 games and has four starts. He has totaled 45 tackles, three sacks, one pass deflection, and one forced fumble.

Texas was one of the few schools to offer Thornton back when he was being recruited. He even made a couple of trips down to Austin during the summer of 2015. After five seasons in Baton Rouge, Thornton entered the transfer portal on Jan. 12.

Now, he will be coming to play for a team that currently does not have a defensive coordinator. Sarkisian has done his due diligence and taken his time to find the right man for the job. Thornton’s role will be known once a coordinator is hired and they announced what kind of base scheme they will run.

If the 4-3 base is retained, seeing Thornton play the JACK position could be a possibility. With Joseph Ossai departing to the NFL, Texas needs an experienced veteran to take over. Although he spent the last season at middle linebacker, Thronton has experience rushing the passer.

Thornton was a highly-toured recruit out of Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas. He ranked as the No. 15 weakside defensive end in the country, the No. 205 player in the country, and the No. 32 prospect in the state of Texas.

Report: Longhorns add the 2018 leading rusher in Division II to the roster

The Longhorns have signed Gabriel Watson of Sioux Falls as a graduate transfer. This gives Texas four running backs on scholarship.

The Texas Longhorns have added another running back to the roster according to a report from Horns247. In a recent media session following their latest scrimmage, head coach Tom Herman said he was apprehensive about playing the upcoming season with just three backs on scholarship. On Wednesday they added a top rusher from FCS (Division II).

Gabriel Watson led the FCS in rushing in 2018 while playing for Sioux Falls. As a sophomore runner he finished with 26 touchdowns and nearly 2,000 yards on the ground for University of Sioux Falls. This gives the Longhorns a fourth running back after Daniel Young opted out of the season.

Adding Watson will be huge for the Longhorns depth at the position. Herman mentioned the position is very violent and he can rest easy knowing that he will have another capable back. Currently the team has Keaontay Ingram, Roschon Johnson and Bijan Robinson as the three active backs. Ingram and Robinson were both held out of the scrimmage on Saturday for precautionary reasons.

Watson joins the Longhorns as a grad transfer after missing most of last season with an injury. Chip Brown was the first to report the signing.
