Carolina Panthers: Examining each game remaining on the 2020 schedule

Let’s review each game remaining on the 2020 slate and project where this over-achieving group might finish.

The Carolina Panthers are 3-6 heading into Week 10 and are currently on a four-game losing streak. Things can change fast in the NFL, though. Their record is admittedly not great. However, this team has kept every game close so far this season, which bodes well for their future. Right now, their average point differential is only -1.8. Considering the level of competition they’ve faced so far, that’s pretty impressive – the six teams who have beaten them have a combined record of 33-19.

There are still a couple of NFC heavyweights left to play, but from here on out the team’s schedule will get much easier, so more wins should be coming soon. Let’s review each game remaining on the 2020 slate and project where this over-achieving group might finish.

How tough is the Panthers 2020 schedule based on opponent QBs?

According to the Athletic, Carolina has the fourth-toughest schedule in the league based on their opponents’ QBs by tier.

Few NFL teams have a more challenging road ahead in 2020 than the Panthers. In addition to having the most-turned-over roster in the league, they face a daunting regular season schedule featuring some of the game’s best quarterbacks.

According to the Athletic, Carolina has the fourth-toughest schedule in the league based on their opponents’ quarterbacks by tier.

“The Panthers play by far the toughest in-division schedule of opposing quarterbacks as Brady, Ryan and Drew Brees combine for a 1.66 average. Carolina will try to conquer that lineup with Teddy Bridgewater. Contrast that with the Chiefs, who will line up with Mahomes while facing in-division opponents who combine for a league-worst 3.55 average.”

To make things even better, the Panthers will be fielding the youngest defense to play in the NFL in the last decade.

On the bright side, if Joe Brady’s new offense gets up to speed quick, we can expect a lot of fantasy-friendly games this year.

Vote: How many games will the Panthers win in 2020?

How many games do you think they’ll win?

Even the most devoted Carolina Panthers fans should be realistic about what to expect during the 2020 season. After the most successful run in franchise history during the Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly and Ron Rivera era, they’re on the cusp of a rebuilding period.

Since December, practically all of the team’s important cornerstones have been removed for one reason or another. Rivera was fired, Newton was released, Kuechly retired and most of the other defensive starters signed with other teams in free agency.

There are reasons to be hopeful about the team’s future, including having the best running back in the NFL on the roster. However, it would be a huge surprise if the Panthers wind up competing for a playoff spot this year.

We are predicting Carolina will go 6-10 during the regular season, but some analysts believe they’ll finish as low as 3-13.

Panthers 2020 schedule: Chiefs in Week 9 named toughest game of the year

When the odds come out it will be a shock if Kansas City is favored by anything less than 13.5 points.

The Carolina Panthers are in for a tough road ahead in 2020. In addition to a new coach, a new starting quarterback and a totally remade defense, they’ll face the most difficult schedule in the league according to a projection by Football Outsiders.

The toughest single game of the year? That will come Week 9 when they visit the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, according to Touchdown Wire,

Kansas City has a number of advantages. On top of playing at home, they have the best offensive coach in football, the most-talented quarterback in the NFL and a superb collection of talent at the skill positions. They’ve also added an intriguing new weapon in running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who should thrive in the old Kareem Hunt role.

To stop this juggernaut of an offense the Panthers will rely on an unproven defensive coordinator who’s coaching his first game in the NFL. Phil Snow will lead a unit that was decimated by several free agent losses, one devastating retirement and will probably have at least four rookies starting at key positions.

The Chiefs also got a lot better on defense en route to their first title in 50 years. The additions of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and safety Tyrann Mathieu helped turn around a unit that ranked No. 26 in DVOA in 2018 and improved to No. 14 last season. They should offer a good test for Teddy Bridgewater and a deep, speedy wide receiver corps.

To pull off an upset, the Panthers will have to dominate at the line of scrimmage and get lucky with turnovers. Don’t expect any help from Mahomes in this department, though. Even though he has a reputation as a gunslinger in the same mold as Brett Favre, Mahomes is far less reckless. He only threw a pick on one percent of his passes last season.

When the odds come out it will be a shock if Kansas City is favored by anything less than 13.5 points.

Watch Saints vs. Panthers Live Online.

The Saints (12-3) head to Charlotte to take on the Panthers (5-10) Sunday afternoon.  New Orleans won the first matchup between these two teams 34-31 at home in Week 12 behind a 311 yard, three-touchdown performance from Drew Brees. With their third NFC South championship secured, the Saints are looking to improve their playoff seed with a win and some help from other teams around the league.

The Packers beat the Vikings on Monday, which didn’t help the Saints cause. They currently trail the top-seeded 49ers and second-seeded Packers in the playoff picture. Two weeks ago Drew Brees broke the NFL record for career touchdown passes with No. 540, surpassing Peyton Manning. In a 38-28 win over Tennessee last weekend, Michael Thomas also added his name into the record books, breaking Marvin Harrison’s single-season receptions mark. Thomas has 145 catches for 1,6888 yards in 2019. If the Saints are the third seed when the season is over, it would mark the second time (2011) that they finished in that spot with a 13-3 record.

While the Panthers were red hot early in the season, the tides quickly turned. Carolina has lost seven in a row, including a 38-6 defeat at the hands of Indianapolis last weekend. Rookie Will Grier made his first start and completed 27 of 44 passes for 224 yards and three interceptions.  Christian McCaffrey, the heart and soul of the team, rushed for 54 yards and caught 15 passes for 119 yards. McCaffrey is second in the NFL with 1,361 yards this season. How effective will he be against a defensive unit that features Cam Jordan (14.5 sacks) and is ranked fifth against the run (94.7 YPG)? That will be a major factor in Sunday’s contest.

The Saints and Panthers both fell victim to the Atlanta Falcons in recent weeks. Kyle Allen, who has taken over nicely for the injured Cam Newton, had one of his worst games all season. Allen threw for 325 yards, no touchdowns and tossed four interceptions. However, Carolina does boast the best running back in the league in Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey can do it all as evident by his 70 yards on the ground and 121 yards and one touchdown receiving. McCaffrey has accounted for nearly half of the team’s offensive production this season. He’s a game-changer, but he can’t always do everything on his own and will need help from his teammates against a Saints offense that can put up their fair share of points.

Defensively, New Orleans will need to stop the pass. Matt Ryan threw for 311 yards and one touchdown last weekend and had help from the speedsters Calvin Ridley and Julio Jones, who totaled 143 yards and 91 yards, respectively. Brees can sling the ball and has one of the best wide receivers in the league in Michael Thomas as his go-to target. The Panthers have been much better against the pass (14th) than the rush (27th) this season.

Resilient. That was the word running back Alvin Kamara used to describe the Saints. That was on display against the Buccaneers one week after losing 26-9 vs. Falcons in a divisional contest. Drew Brees was nearly flawless in the team’s 34-17 win over Tampa Bay with 228 yards passing and three touchdowns. Alvin Kamara had 13 carries for 75 yards, while Michael Thomas did what he does best in the receiving game with eight catches for 114 yards and one touchdown. Thomas leads the NFL with 1,141 yards and is six catches shy of 100 on the season. Assuming he achieves that feat, it will mark the third straight year he’s done it, which has only been done by eight players in NFL history.

The story of the game last weekend wasn’t Thomas, his record or the offense, but rather the defense. The Saints defense was in the face of quarterback Jameis Winston all game long. New Orleans created four turnovers and sacked Winston two times. Demario Davis picked up six tackles and an interception, while Cam Jordan added three tackles and one-and-a-half sacks. The Saints defense is ranked third in rushing yards allowed (85.3 YPG) and will face a tough test in McCaffrey.
