Florida football in the top 12 for this elite 2022 defensive back recruit

The Gators are just a bit behind pace so far for the 2022 recruiting class. It has secured just five pledges so far, and its class ranks 23rd on the 247Sports Composite. However, coach Dan Mullen got some good news on Sunday, as Florida cracked the top 12 for five-star safety Kamari Wilson from IMG Academy.

Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M, Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Miami, Florida State, Texas and South Florida are all also in the running for the elite defensive back.

Wilson, the No. 25 overall player in the class, started his career at Westwood High School in Fort Pierce before transferring to IMG for the 2020 season. After a dominant year with the program, he was named to the national Junior All-American team.

A versatile strong safety who can both play physical in the box and stay step-for-step with receivers in coverage, 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins compares his skillset to a former Gators safety, current New York Jet Marcus Maye.

If Florida could land Wilson, it would be a major addition to its 2022 class. Safety is currently a point of weakness on the roster as Shawn Davis, Brad Stewart and Donovan Stiner all decided to move on following the season. The team added a talented pair of safeties in the 2021 class in Corey Collier Jr. and Donovan McMillon, but securing the pledge of a five-star at the position in this upcoming class would be a huge get for Mullen.

Wilson is a five-star prospect and the No. 1 safety in the country. Nationally, he ranks No. 30 and No.6 in his native state of Florida. Name a major college football program and they are recruiting Wilson.

247Sports’ Mike Roach recently caught up with Wilson, where he talked about a recent conversation with Valai and his relationship with the Longhorns.

“We just talk about family, staying safe during COVID and how they see me bringing a big-time play maker to their system,” he said. “We also talk about some of the former players that played at Texas.”

“They are definitely one of them,” he said. “They see me as the next big time safety to come out of Texas, and they want to use me all over the field due to my versatility.”

Valai will continue to go after the top safety in the country, trying to replace five-star players Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster.

Wilson is also heavily interested in Florida, LSU, Miami, and South Carolina. Texas is going to have a tough time fending off SEC schools for his commitment. However, Valai has proven he can work magic before in the recruiting world.
