The #Chiefs earned the top spot in Pro Football Focus’ pre-draft power rankings.

The Kansas City Chiefs earned the top spot in Pro Football Focus’ pre-draft power rankings this week, solidifying their role as the team to beat in the NFL before the 2024 season.

The San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, and Philadelphia Eagles round out the top five behind Kansas City, setting expectations for next season’s playoffs.

As defending Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs seem uniquely positioned to complete their title three-peat next February, but are sure to face fierce opposition in the 2024 regular season.

Kansas City has had a target on its back since winning its first Super Bowl of the Patrick Mahomes era back in 2020. Now, after earning three titles in five seasons, every team in the NFL is preparing to knock off the Chiefs to ensure that the league’s newest dynasty doesn’t stay put at No. 1 in the power rankings for long.

Stay tuned to see if Kansas City’s position on PFF’s list changes after the 2024 NFL Draft.

Former Alabama first round pick Jahmyr Gibbs set to have high school jersey retired

Former Alabama first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs set to have his high school number retired

Jahmyr Gibbs spent the first two years of his collegiate career with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets where he was the first-team All-ACC running back in 2021. Gibbs transferred to Alabama ahead of the 2022 season as he wanted to play for a national championship contender. Improving his NFL draft stock was also another key factor in Gibbs’ decision to join the Tide.

Despite spending only one season with the Crimson Tide, Gibbs was sensational. In just 12 games with Alabama, Gibbs led the Tide’s ground attack with 151 carries for 926 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was also the top option in Alabama’s receiving game as he led the way with 44 receptions that were good for 444 yards and three touchdowns. As if that wasn’t enough somehow, he was also a nice addition in the special teams game with 13 returns for 258 yards (23.9 YPA). Gibbs’ sensational 2022 campaign skyrocketed his draft status all he was eventually selected No. 12 overall by the Detroit Lions.

Long before Gibbs was an Alabama standout or an NFL first-round selection, he was a high school legend.

Gibbs played his high school ball for Dalton High School in Georgia. Gibbs was a top 50 recruit in the country and the No. 4 ranked RB in the 2020 recruiting cycle. He played in 32 varsity football games over three years and had 530 carries for 4882 yards and 70 touchdowns. However,  a remarkable senior season put Gibbs on the map with 233 carries for 2,554 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Dalton High School recently announced that they would be retiring Gibbs’s high school jersey number. Gibbs wore No. 1 for Dalton and will be the last player to ever do so.

Update: Packers rookie WR Jayden Reed to wear No. 11

Reed won’t become the first player since Curly Lambeau to wear No. 1 in a regular season game. The rookie WR will wear No. 11.

Green Bay Packers rookie receiver Jayden Reed will not become the first player since Curly Lambeau to wear the No. 1 uniform in a regular season game. After giving Reed the historic number following his pick in the second round of the 2023 draft, the Packers switched Reed’s number to No. 11 on the team’s official roster on Saturday. It’s unclear what changed in terms of wearing the number.

Reed wore No. 5 and No. 1 at Michigan State. Both numbers are “unofficially” retired in Green Bay for Paul Hornung and Lambeau, respectively.

The most recent player to wear No. 11 in Green Bay is Sammy Watkins, who played nine games for the Packers last season. Recently rostered receivers Devin Funchess, Jarrett Boykin and Trevor Davis also wore the number.

The Packers have officially retired the following numbers: No. 3 (Tony Canadeo), No. 4 (Brett Favre), No. 14 (Don Hutson), No. 15 (Bart Starr), No. 66 (Ray Nitschke) and No. 92 (Reggie White)

No. 12 is also never expected to be worn again in honor of Aaron Rodgers.

Overall, the Packers have nine officially or unofficially retired numbers, including four single digits.

The Packers have not given out the No. 0, a newly available number for the 2023 season. The following rookie draft picks do not have numbers currently: Colby Wooden, Dontayvion Wicks, Sean Clifford, Karl Brooks, Anders Carlson, Carrington Valentine, Lew Nichols, Anthony Johnson Jr. and Grant DuBose.

Christian Watson wanted the No. 1 last year but was denied. He initially picked No. 82 before switching to No. 9.

New Packers WR Jayden Reed to wear No. 1?

Will second-round pick Jayden Reed become the first Packers player since Curly Lambeau to wear No. 1 in a regular season game?

New Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed will possibly wear No. 1 as a rookie.

UPDATE: Reed is now listed as No. 11 on the team’s website.

After beginning his collegiate career wearing No. 5, Reed switched to No. 1 for his final two seasons at Michigan State.

According to Wes Hodkiewicz of the team’s official site, Reed would become the first Packers player to wear No. 1 in a regular season game since Curly Lambeau in 1926. The number has been unofficially retired for almost a century, so it’s possible Reed will eventually need to make a change. No. 5 is also unofficially retired for Hall of Famer Paul Hornung.

First-round pick Lukas Van Ness will wear No. 90, while second-round pick Luke Musgrave will wear No. 88.

Crimson Tide earn No. 1 spot in AP Poll heading into March Madness

AP Poll votes Alabama Crimson Tide as the new No. 1

After an exciting week that saw the Alabama Crimson Tide crowned champions of the SEC, they are officially the No. 1 team in the country headed into March Madness. Aside from earning the No. 1 overall seed in March Madness, the AP Poll voted them as the final No. 1 before the conclusion of the season.

Nate Oats has now won his second SEC tournament in the last three years and has the Alabama basketball program performing at an elite level. The Tide were fortunate to extend his contract earlier in the year and keep him in Tuscaloosa for the long haul.

The Tide will open up tournament play on Thursday with a rather generous side of the bracket.

No. 1 Alabama women’s soccer hosts first NCAA tournament game Friday

The Alabama Crimson Tide women’s soccer has received a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and as a result, the team will have its first game in Tuscaloosa.

The Tide will host Jackson State, the winners of the SWAC, who are 11-7-1 on the year at 6 p.m. CST on Friday.

Alabama finishes the year 19-2-1, including a 15-game winning streak that earned the Tide the No. 1 ranking in the country. Alabama lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC championship snapping the streak.

Nelly Korda is third American to reach No. 1 in women’s golf, will headline American Olympic team

Nelly Korda, 22, officially ascended to the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings on Monday.

Nelly Korda, all of 22 years old, officially ascended to the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings on Monday.

She took over the top spot after winning her first major Sunday at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, but the rankings didn’t update until Monday.

Korda is just the third American to climb to No. 1 since the rankings were introduced in 2006.

“Reaching World No. 1 has always been a goal of mine, and I can’t believe that I’ve actually done it. The other players who have been No. 1 are incredible, and I’m honored to join that list,” Korda said in a statement released by the LPGA.

Stacy Lewis was the last American to be No. 1, doing so for four weeks in 2013 and 21 weeks in 2014. Cristie Kerr was No. 1 for five weeks in 2010.

Korda was No. 3 before her win at the KPMG. She moved ahead of Jin Young Ko and Inbee Park, ending Ko’s run of 100 weeks atop the rankings.

Numbers game

Korda has three wins and eight top-10s this season. She leads the LPGA with 200 birdies. She also leads with 25 rounds in the 60s. She’s tied for first with the most eagles in 2021 with nine – she had two in Sunday’s final round at the KPMG.

Ko’s streak of 100 consecutive weeks at No. 1 was the third-longest. Lorena Ochoa was No. 1 for 158 weeks (April 23, 2007 to May 2, 2010), and Yani Tseng had a stretch of 109 weeks (Feb. 14, 2011 to March 17, 2013).

Annika Sorenstam was the first No. 1 in 2006 and held the top spot for 61 weeks before Ochoa had her run.

Money game

Korda is 64th on the LPGA’s all-time money list at $5,532,484. She’s played in 92 LPGA events. She took home $675,000 for winning the KPMG.

On to the Olympics

Korda is also an Olympian. The LPGA confirmed Sunday that Nelly and her sister, Jessica, will represent the United States in the Summer Games on Aug. 4-7 at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Japan. The sisters will join Lexi Thompson and Danielle Kang on the American squad. Thompson was also on the 2016 team in Rio. The official Olympic qualifiers for each country will be released Tuesday.
