Notre Dame football: Today is the day for five-star Elijah Rushing

A five-star defender from a catholic high school is set to announce his decision. I feel like we’ve heard this story once already this week.

Today is the day for five-star defensive end [autotag]Elijah Rushing[/autotag] to make his college choice known.  The elite talent from Salpointe Catholic in Arizona traveled to take an official visit to Notre Dame in June and the Irish are a finalist for his commitment.

Notre Dame landing him however would likely feel like Ohio State fans felt when [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag] announced his commitment this past weekend.  The Irish have a seat at the table but in complete transparency, nobody is looking at them as a realistic threat at this point.

Rushing has been linked to a few west coast programs with Arizona gaining significant steam of late.  Oregon has been a favorite here but according to those in the know it doesn’t look like the Ducks will finish this one off.

Rushing will announce his commitment at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.  Along with Arizona, Notre Dame, and Oregon, Tennessee also has a seat on the table.

Here’s hoping for the best but expecting more of the same regarding Notre Dame recruiting today.

Friend of Badger guard enters portal from Gonzaga

Hunter Sallis, a former five-star recruit and 6-foot-5 guard entered the transfer portal Friday after two seasons with Gonzaga.

Hunter Sallis, a former five-star recruit and a 6-foot-5 guard, entered the transfer portal Friday after two seasons with Gonzaga. Sallis is from Omaha, Nebraska, and has a relationship with Badgers’ point guard Chucky Hepburn.

Coming out of Millard North High School, Sallis was the 21st-ranked prospect in the nation for the class of 2021. He never really clicked with Mark Few and the Zags in his two seasons with the program, averaging 4.5 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists during the 2022-2023 campaign.

Although he’ll be hitting the open market and anyone can secure his commitment, Greg Gard and the Badgers remain a long shot to acquire him regardless of his friendship with Hepburn.

Fans can dream.

All-time look at every Oklahoma Sooners five-star player in the 247Sports database

Every five-star player for the Oklahoma Sooners in the modern recruiting era.

The Oklahoma Sooners just had arguably the best recruiting class since 2000. With three five-star signees, Oklahoma finished fourth in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings for the 2023 cycle.

[autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] became the program’s fourth five-star quarterback signee in the modern era, following [autotag]Rhett Bomar[/autotag], [autotag]Spencer Rattler[/autotag] and [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag].

Arguably the most productive position group among the five-stars that have played for the Oklahoma Sooners has been running back. Though the defensive tackles could make a strong case, the work [autotag]Adrian Peterson[/autotag], [autotag]DeMarco Murray[/autotag] and [autotag]Joe Mixon[/autotag] did while in Norman puts them among the best Sooners backs of all time.

Defensive tackle is the other spot that could make a case for best five-star position group with [autotag]Gerald McCoy[/autotag] and [autotag]Tommie Harris[/autotag].

Only one five-star rated player never played a snap for the Sooners, linebacker Chris Patterson. Patterson went the junior college route before playing a season with Kansas State.

Here’s a look at every five-star player to play for the Oklahoma Sooners in the 247Sports database.

Wisconsin offers five-star class of 2025 wide receiver

The Badgers offered Jaime Ffrench Jr., a class of 2025 five-star wide receiver from Jacksonville, Florida on Tuesday.

The Badgers offered Jaime Ffrench Jr., a five-star wide receiver from Jacksonville, Florida on Tuesday. The sophomore still has two more seasons of football with Mandarin High School before he potentially makes the jump to the college level as a part of the class of 2025.

Although he’s still a couple years away, the wide receiver has received 20 Division 1 offers, including powerhouses Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State. With the addition of Luke Fickell as head coach, even though it’s still a long shot, there’s more hope than ever that Wisconsin could land Ffrench Jr. in 2025.

In recent weeks, the Badgers have brought in four wide receivers through the transfer portal, including former four-star wide receiver CJ Williams from USC.Wisconsin offers five-star class of 2025 wide receiver

Top Notre Dame target to visit campus Sunday

The biggest remaining fish in the 2024 pond for Notre Dame. Will he end up in South Bend?

Notre Dame hasn’t had a whole lot of bigger defensive targets in recent years than 2024 defensive lineman [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag], both figuratively and literally.  The five-star defensive tackle from St. Ignatius in Chicago checks in at 6-5, 310 pounds and requires a bulldozer to move.

Scott is one of the top recruits regardless of position in the ’24 class and has been in the news a good amount of late.  Earlier in the month, Scott announced his top-eight schools that included Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, USC, Michigan, Alabama, Miami, and Colorado.  Shortly after he announced he’d be making his commitment to a college program on his birthday, January 31.

To top things off, two-time reigning national champion Georgia offered Scott a scholarship shortly after he announced his commitment date.  Will that matter in regards to where he winds up committing to?

Time will tell but Notre Dame has to still like their chances with the mountain of a young man.  We’re just nine days out from his commitment and according to news broken by Tom Loy of 247Sports on Saturday, Scott will be making a visit to Notre Dame on Sunday.

2024 quarterback commitment [autotag]C.J. Carr[/autotag] has remained vocal on social media about getting Scott to South Bend.

With Scott’s commitment date not shifting following the Georgia offer I’m starting to let myself get excited about it happening, even if Loy already predicted it to earlier this week.

Is Notre Dame losing ground with their top 2023 commitment?

Do you currently consider him part of Notre Dame’s class given the circumstances?

Coffee is for closers and we’re finding out just how much of one Marcus Freeman will be in his first year as Notre Dame’s head coach.  The window for early signing period will open in December as a few unknown ultimate decisions are set to be announced that day.

One such was defensive end, [autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag], who earlier in the year withdrew his commitment to pursue other options. Will five-star safety [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] be the next high-end Notre Dame commitment to do the same?

Our colleagues at Sooners Wire recapped the much-needed weekend in Norman as Oklahoma dominated Oklahoma State.  One potential player in attendance on another unofficial visit was Bowen.  Here is what the Sooners Wire staff had to say of Bowen’s latest visit.

Bowen has been firmly in the Sooners’ sights as far back as the Lincoln Riley regime. Oklahoma has been diligent in continuing to recruit Bowen despite his commitment to the Fighting Irish and won’t stop until Bowen signs on the line for a school.

That school may be Oklahoma when all is said and done. Following his trip to Norman for Bedlam, two new projections in Oklahoma’s favor have surfaced from two different Rivals recruiting insiders.

Bryant Crews of Sooners Wire

So a couple of recruiting reporters have Bowen getting ready to switch to Oklahoma.

I have no problem with Bowen taking a visit while being a Notre Dame commitment.  My problem comes in asking if he’s an actual commitment at this point or not.  For instance, if Marcus Freeman calls Bowen tomorrow and asks him if he’s part of the 2023 recruiting class to Notre Dame, how would Bowen answer?

Will he ultimately choose Notre Dame?  This feels like one of those “where there’s smoke there’s fire” situations but who really knows besides Bowen, and chances are he doesn’t know for sure, either.

With all of this wonder about where Bowen ultimately ends up, how then is he still considered committed to Notre Dame?  It’s not one of those things that doesn’t really matter a whole lot so I won’t kill the feeling of a good weekend, but does that make any sense whatsoever?

WATCH: Five-star Texas WR commit Johntay Cook’s highlight tape

Johntay Cook is a problem for opposing defenses.

Johntay Cook is one of the nation’s most dynamic playmakers in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

The five-star ranks as the No. 6 pass catcher in the country and the No. 6 overall prospect in the state of Texas, according to the 247Sports composite.

Landing the DeSoto high school product was a major splash for Steve Sarkisian and wide receivers coach Brennan Marion. Cook chose the Longhorns over the likes of Oregon, Michigan, Alabama and Texas A&M.

Cook excels on the football field using his elite speed and great ball skills. He is one of the sharpest route runners in the class and is a great fit for Sark’s offensive scheme.

Here is a look at Cook’s junior year film where he snagged 38 catches for 806 yards and a whopping 19 touchdowns. Texas fans have lots to be excited about with Cook in the fold.

Texas cracks the top schools for five-star PF Ronald Holland

Texas is squarely in the mix for another elite talent.

Chris Beard is in hot pursuit of one of the top players in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Five-star power forward Ronald Holland announced his top options for his recruitment. Texas made the cut along with Arkansas, Kentucky, UCLA and the NBA G League.

Holland ranks as the No. 1 player in the state of Texas and the No. 9 overall prospect in the nation for the 2023 class. 247Sports’ Brandon Jenkins spoke highly of Holland’s skill set in his scouting report.

Holland has a high motor to go along with good mobility, length, and agility. He runs the floor and changes ends well. Holland is both very active and versatile defensively. He is capable of impacting the game in a number of ways, but his ability to crash the glass maybe his biggest strength. He has worked on his shooting mechanics as they have progressed since his arrival in high school. He needs to continue to develop in that area of his game. A young prospect for his class, Holland’s upside will be based upon his mindset and dedication in improving his craft.

The Duncanville product is expected to make a visit to Texas in Sept. to take part in a huge recruiting weekend with Alabama football coming to town.

Top 10 offensive recruits Texas has signed in the last five years

The highest rated offensive players Texas has signed since 2018.

Recruiting is one of the most important aspects of college football. Steve Sarkisian is off to a great start to his Texas tenure in the recruiting department after signing the No. 5 ranked class in the 2022 cycle.

Texas has a strong history of attracting major talent to its program. The Longhorns consistently finish inside the the top 10 despite not having tons of success on the field as of late.

Sarkisian’s recruiting pitch includes playing in an offensive system that has put many players in the NFL, the incoming move to the SEC, potential for lucrative NIL deals and much more.

While vital for a team’s success, recruiting is an impossible science to figure out. Every year some highly ranked prospects fan out and some underrated players shine.

Here is a look at the top 10 rated offensive recruits Texas has signed in the past five years. Transfers are not included on this list.
