Texas is likely to pick up steam on the recruiting trail over the next few weeks. Continue reading “Texas climbs seven spots in 2023 recruiting class rankings after latest commitment”

Early look at how the 2023 classes look for the Big 12 and Texas

Early on Texas Tech, Baylor leads the 2023 classes but Texas has a lot of irons in the fire.

After securing a top-five class in the first full cycle under head coach Steve Sarkisian, the Longhorns are off to a slow start on the 2023 recruiting trail. It isn’t a big issue for Texas as they have plenty of top-level targets they are gunning for.

Currently, the Big 12 Conference’s top class is the Texas Tech Red Raiders, yes you read that correctly. Both Tech and the Baylor Bears have shot out of cannon on the recruiting trail as they have 10 early pledges apiece.

A quick look at how the teams stand in the 247Sports team rankings:

  1. Texas Tech, 10 Commits
  2. Baylor, 10 Commits
  3. Oklahoma, 4 Commits
  4. Oklahoma State, 4 Commits
  5. West Virginia, 3 Commits
  6. Texas, 1 Commit
  7. TCU, 1 Commit
  8. Iowa St, No Commits
  9. Kansas, No Commits
  10. Kansas St, No Commits

This will almost certainly change over the course of the next 12 months, but head coaches such as Joey McGuire and Dave Aranda have seen early returns from their work on the trails. McGuire’s haul so far has very few players actually rated by 247Sports. Only four of their 10 commits are ranked.  They are led by a four-star edge defender and former Baylor pledge, Isaiah Crawford.

For the Longhorns, the staff has high priority targets such as Newman Isidore quarterback Arch Manning. The crown jewel of the class as the No. 1 overall prospect. As it sits now, Sarkisian and the staff are right in the thick of it as Manning recently eliminated the Clemson Tigers from the mix. That is just one iron in the fire.

The Longhorns know they will likely lose Bijan Robinson to the NFL following the season, he had first-round buzz since the day he stepped onto the Forty Acres. That is why landing Rueben Owens of El Campo is where Tashard Choice should focus his efforts. The former Texas commit has kept the Longhorns right in the thick of it.

The other key member of the 2023 cycle to monitor is wide receiver Johntay Cook II. The DeSoto wideout is the No. 6 ranked player in Texas and the No. 7 wide receiver according to 247Sports composite rankings. If Sarkisian can land all three of these targets, the rest of the class will start coming together.

The 2022 class was known for their offensive line, but 2023 could be the year of the offensive explosion at their skill positions. As far as the defense, we will dive more into that side of the ball soon. We will highlight one priority target at cornerback, Javien Toviano. The five-star cornerback from Arlington-Martin would be a welcomed addition as the Longhorns look to reload on the defensive side of the ball.

An updated look at the Big 12 recruiting class rankings

A look at where Big 12 schools recruiting classes rank after the early signing period.

It was an offseason like no other in the Big 12 conference this season.

Three Big 12 schools took part in one of the wildest coaching carousels in college football history. Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma in shambles after unexpectedly taking off to USC while TCU and Texas Tech fired their coaches midseason.

Oklahoma and TCU took a hit while Texas Tech was able to bolster their 2022 class after the coaching change.

Another major offseason storyline in the conference was the Texas vs Texas Tech recruiting battle for top transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers. The former five-star ended up signing with the Longhorns after taking visits to both schools.

The Big 12 has also seen notable players enter the transfer portal such as Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler, TCU’s Zach Evans, Texas’ Casey Thompson and many others.

With all of the chaos leading to the early signing day, let’s take a look at how each recruiting class in the conference ranks according to 247Sports:

Five recruits that Texas should poach from TCU’s 2022 class

With TCU and Gary Patterson parting ways, Texas should try to flip these five commits.

All is fair in love and college football recruiting.

When another program loses a head coach, it is a guarantee that other schools will start reaching out to their current commits.

TCU parted ways with Gary Patterson on Sunday, who had been the head coach for the Horned Frogs for over 20 years. While Texas is likely not too disappointed to see him go, as lately he had quite the hold on the Longhorns, they are probably even more thrilled about the fact that they will have another crack at some certain recruits that committed to TCU.

The 2022 recruiting class put together by Patterson is not the deepest, as there are only 11 commits and it currently ranks No. 46 in the nation, but there are some talented players that Texas missed out and now will have one final swing at trying to convince them to come to the Forty

Here are five players that Texas should consider attempting to flip from TCU’s 2022 class starting with offensive linemen Cade McConnell.

Texas offers the No. 1 safety in the nation for the 2023 cycle

Four-star safety Caleb Downs picks up an offer from Texas.

Where Texas lands in ESPN’s updated 2022 recruiting class rankings

The Longhorns are within the top 10 of ESPN’s updated 2022 recruiting class rankings.

Steve Sarkisian is already doing an impressive job bringing in elite talent for his first full recruiting class at Texas.

Although several highly rated prospects have yet to announce their commitments, which will certainly mix up any 2022 recruiting class rankings, the Longhorns have seemingly stayed put with one of the top 10 classes in the nation.

Over the last few months, Texas has seen a rise to No. 5 and also a fall to the No. 10 range. It’s essentially a game of seesaw that doesn’t carry much weight until the classes are finalized on national signing day. Let’s have fun with it anyways.

In ESPN’s updated 2022 recruiting class rankings (subscription required), Texas landed at No. 7 in the nation. Considering Oklahoma is at No. 6, the Longhorns currently have the No. 2 class in the Big 12.

ESPN also notes that Jaydon Blue is their highest graded offensive commit in Texas’ 2022 class, while safety Bryan Allen Jr. holds those honors on the defensive side of the ball.
If Sarkisian’s staff is able to close on a few high profile targets at their BBQ/Pool Party event on July 30 such as Bryce Anderson and Derrick Brown, Texas could very realistically end up in the top five when it’s all said and done.

Big 12 Football: 247Sports ranked the top 10 transfer additions

Kevin Flaherty of 247Sports ranked the Big 12’s most important transfer additions this offseason.

The NCAA transfer portal was hit hard by several Big 12 football programs this offseason.

Many of these incoming players have the potential to make an immediate impact for their respective programs in 2021. Kevin Flaherty of 247Sports recently ranked the Big 12’s top 10 most important transfer additions.

Keep in mind that these rankings are regarding the incoming transfers that are expected to make a significant contribution and fill an important need for their new teams. It’s not necessarily the highest rated transfers or prospects.

Former LSU linebacker Ray Thornton, who transferred to Texas in January, was among the 10 players listed. Oklahoma and TCU led the list with two players mentioned, while Oklahoma State was the only Big 12 program to not have an incoming transfer listed.

Take a look at Flaherty’s list of the most important incoming transfers in the Big 12 ahead of the 2021 season:
