UGA football NFL player comparisons ahead of 2020 Draft

We examine UGA NFL comparisons for D’Andre Swift, JR Reed, Jake Fromm, Isaiah Wilson, Andrew Thomas, Solomon Kindley, and Lawrence Cager.

The Georgia Bulldogs are expected to have anywhere from six to ten players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. But what NFL players are elite UGA prospects being compared to?

Georgia Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm is anticipated to be one of the top quarterbacks selected. Where he falls among the best prospects is up for debate.

Jake Fromm’s player comparison is current Washington Redskin’s quarterback Colt McCoy. McCoy doesn’t have elite physical talent, but is a solid player who has been in the NFL for ten seasons. PFF compares Fromm to another similar NFL player.

McCoy has been a back-up for much of his career, which is an indication of what NFL.com thinks of Jake Fromm. Fromm, like McCoy, had a distinguished career at a major college.

McCoy, who was a star for the Texas Longhorns, has thrown for 29 touchdowns and 27 interceptions across 28 career NFL starts. He has over 6,000 career passing yards. McCoy was a third round pick in 2010.

UGA’s Jake Fromm standing out in NFL interviews

Former Georgia Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm is standing out in NFL Draft interviews.

Former Georgia Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm is standing out in NFL Draft interviews according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Due to COVID-19, Fromm and 2020 NFL Draft prospects are having to conduct the vast majority of their interviews virtually.

Fromm has especially impressed NFL quarterback coaches in the pre-draft process. Fromm had control of Georgia’s offense throughout his career and is as seasoned of a veteran as any quarterback in the NFL Draft.

Despite a down junior season, it was inevitable that Fromm would rise during the interview process. Fromm never threw more than seven interceptions in his three seasons as a starter and his decision making and knowledge of the game are two strengths that general managers love.

Fromm helped UGA to three straight SEC Championship Games, winning his first. His steadying presence in the Georgia offense kept the Dawgs consistent and helped talented teams meet or exceed expectations year after year.

Additionally, Fromm learned to adapt to new receivers throughout the entire 2019 season. And given the adjustment from college to the pros, Fromm may be ahead of the pack in terms of the transition.

Fromm still likely won’t be a first round selection. That being said, his ability to operate an offensive system effectively won’t be overlooked.

Georgia fans should expect Fromm’s name to be called in either the second or third round.

Dan Orlovsky says Jake Fromm is ‘best connect-the-dot QB in this draft’

Former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky says Jake Fromm is ‘best connect-the-dot QB in this draft’, breaks down film and predicts where he will land.

Jake Fromm, without question, left his mark on Georgia football in his three years playing between the hedges for the Bulldogs.

Fromm decided to forgo his senior season in Athens and enter the 2020 NFL Draft.  The question now is how will his skillset transition the pros.

Former NFL quarterback, and current ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky had some great things to say about Fromm on Friday.

In a tweet, Orlovsky broke down Fromm’s connect-the-dot ability with some film. Connecting the dots is basically when a quarterback reads his options and how the opposing defense is playing each of his receivers, one option, or one dot at a time.

Orlovsky complemented Fromm and said that “plenty of quarterbacks have ‘their trait/traits’ that make them the player they are.” and his is his decision making.

Fromm has never been a flashy quarterback that goes for home-run balls or the biggest play.  He’s smart, manages games, and gets the job done by picking apart defenses.

Orlovsky mentioned that the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans saints and New England Patriots could all be great fits for Fromm to land, come draft day.  He is a quarterback that would work very well in one of those systems, as these teams are in the market for a new franchise QB.

Future Hall of Fame QBs Drew Brees (Saints) and Philip Rivers (Colts) would be perfect mentors to Fromm for the next two seasons.  Tom Brady left the Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Fromm would be in good hands in New England with head coach Bill Belichick.  He would also be reunited with former teammates Sony Michel, David Andrews and Isaiah Wynn, who all play for the Patriots.

7 Georgia Bulldogs taken in CBSSports’ full NFL mock draft

CBS Sports released a full NFL mock draft that included 7 Georgia football players being taken.

Most NFL mock drafts that we’ve seen over the past couple of months have had 2-3 Georgia football players going in the first round.

However, in CBS Sports’ most recent 7-round mock draft, the outlet has just one Dawg taken in the first round, and that’s left tackle Andrew Thomas.

Analyst Chris Trapasso projects the New York Jets to take Thomas with the No. 11 overall pick in the NFL Draft, which is currently scheduled for April 23 in Las Vegas.

On Thomas, Trapasso wrote:

Jets GM Joe Douglas knows how vital an offensive line is after his time in Philadelphia. Thomas was outstanding the two seasons at Georgia and has length for days.

Trapasso has Thomas ranked as the 15th overall player in the draft class and 4th ranked offensive tackle.

In total, Trapasso has seven Georgia players going in the draft.

Round 2:

Charlie Woerner praises Georgia football teammates at NFL Combine

Charlie Woerner, nephew of legendary Georgia Bulldogs safety Scott Woerner, is just happy to be here.

“I definitely don’t feel like I have enough tape out there catching balls. So it’s definitely something to go out and prove that I can do.”

The tight end is one of ten former Dawgs invited to appear before NFL scouts prior to the league’s 2020 draft.

Answering media members at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Woerner spent a near majority of his public interview singing the praises of his fellow Bulldogs invited to the combine.

First mentioned was tailback D’Andre Swift:

“D’Andre is a great player. I think he’s going to do really well in the NFL. He had a really good three years at Georgia. I wish all the best for him.”

Next, offensive tackle Andrew Thomas:

“I saw Andrew grow a ton, man. When he came in as a freshman, I’d never seen a freshman more ready to play and help out a team.”

Thomas, projected by some as the top offensive tackle prospect in this year’s NFL Draft, received a glowing review from his former teammate.

“As a freshman and to his junior year, he grew a ton. He got stronger and he really understood the game more. It was fun to play with him, that’s for sure.”

Woerner continued:

“To put Andrew out there [as starting left tackle] as a freshman and for him to do what he did in three years at Georgia…we trusted Andrew.”

Woerner’s former collegiate quarterbacks and fellow combine invitees Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason, both of whom declared early for 2020’s NFL Draft, are right-handed. Referring to protecting a righty quarterback’s blindside, he noted that “left tackle is one of the most important positions on the offense.”

On Jake Fromm:

“Jake’s a competitor, man. He’s going to do whatever it takes to win a football game. He’s going to be one of the hardest working guys on the team for sure. He’s going to push everyone around him to be the best.”

Woerner will participate in drills at the NFL Combine on Thursday, February 27 alongside all invited tight ends, wide receivers and quarterbacks, including fellow Georgia alumni Jake Fromm and Lawrence Cager.

Former Georgia football QB Jake Fromm on why he declared early

It was a surprising decision to some, but one that made a good deal of sense for Fromm both from an outsider’s perspective and his own.

In his first appearance before media members at the NFL Scouting Combine, quarterback prospect Jake Fromm fielded questions regarding his decision to leave the University of Georgia and declare for the NFL Draft with a year of eligibility remaining.

It was a surprising decision to some of Dawg Nation, but ultimately one that made a good deal of sense for Fromm both from an outsider’s perspective and his own.

“That was a tough one for me. I’ve never prayed about any decision more than that decision.”

Though it was certainly his and only his decision to make, he didn’t reach his conclusion on his own. The projected draft pick out of Houston County spoke of the many people in his corner who provided him guidance along the way.

“I really spoke to friends, family, mentors, people who, I really respect their opinion. But it was in my heart to come here and do this, to want to be a professional. It was a dream of mine since I was a kid. Now I’m here trying to make dreams come true.”

When asked if the loss of several offensive coaching staff members affected his decision to forego his senior season in Athens, Fromm, cautiously and intelligently didn’t give too much away.

“I didn’t have every clue. There were some things that we kind of knew about and some things we didn’t, but that’s part of college football. Things are constantly kind of ‘merry-go-round.'”

Fromm will appear alongside a slew of other NFL-caliber gunslingers in drills and skills assessments on Thursday, February 27, along with tight ends and wide receivers. Appearing confident in his decision, he’s eager to get going.

UGA football’s Jake Fromm gets NFL player comparison

UGA football’s Jake Fromm gets NFL player comparison from NFL.com. The former Georgia Bulldog will be a top quarterback in the NFL Draft.

Georgia Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm was invited to the NFL Combine and is expected to be one of the top ten quarterbacks selected in 2020. Where he falls in these ten is up for debate.

Fromm had an up and down 2019 season and struggled to truly get in sync with his new group of receivers. He and George Pickens looked deadly at times, but for Fromm and Georgia, the injuries, suspensions, and players declaring for the NFL decimated the wide receiver position in Athens.

Fromm will get a clean slate in the NFL, but who does NFL.com compare him to?

Jake Fromm’s player comparison is current Washington Redskin’s quarterback Colt McCoy. McCoy doesn’t have elite physical talent, but is a solid player who has been in the NFL for ten seasons.

Georgia’s Jake Fromm finishes as SEC’s 3rd highest graded QB

The Georgia Bulldogs finished the SEC with another 11-1 regular season and a third consecutive SEC Championship.

The Georgia Bulldogs finished the SEC with another 11-1 regular season and a third consecutive SEC Championship. Bulldog fans now have massive expectations and Jake Fromm is a victim of his own success.

Fromm is three out of three in making the SEC Championship Game. Before Fromm, Georgia played in three SEC Championships in the past thirteen seasons. That’s an accomplishment for both Fromm and Kirby Smart.

Yes, Georgia has to get over the big hump, but much of Georgia’s lack of big-game success can be attributed to poor luck. Georgia would have a National Championship under Fromm if it weren’t for a butchered off-sides call and numerous miraculous plays.

Jake Fromm finished the season as the SEC’s third highest graded QB, per PFF, in what was a successful 2019 season:

Fromm played almost error-free football outside of UGA’s two defeats. Fromm didn’t return any of his leading receivers and lost several others to injuries and suspensions. Georgia fans should want Fromm back. We’re spoiled by his consistency and ability to take care of the football.

Fromm simply didn’t have the weapons like Joe Burrow or Tua Tagovailoa this season. His NFL decision will come following his Sugar Bowl victory against the Baylor Bears. He’ll still be sought after. Probably not like he would’ve been before the season, but he’s Day Two NFL Draft prospect and may start right away in the NFL.

The Georgia Bulldogs are your 2020 Sugar Bowl champs – Quick thoughts

Georgia football is the Sugar Bowl champions after beating Baylor in New Orleans.

Georgia is undefeated in the new decade.

The Dawgs moved to 12-2 on the season and 1-0 in 2020 after defeating No. 7 Baylor 26-14 in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Things were just clicking on Wednesday night against a Bears defense that is one of the best in the country.

But with 10+ key players sitting out the game, Georgia still came to play. After an embarrassing defeat last year, Kirby Smart made sure that the players who actually wanted to be there were ready for it.

Despite the fact that this was essentially an exhibition game, the win leaves Georgia fans with a nice feeling about things to come.

Recruiting is not over, and I’m sure Georgia targets were impressed by how the Dawgs played.

Speaking of recruiting, the Dawgs have a few big ones coming up this week. 5-stars Zach Evans (RB) and Darnell Washington (TE) will be making their announcements live during the the Under Armour All-American Game on Thursday. Coverage will begin at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.

Looking to next year, we saw a few players who are sure to make a big impact in 2020.

Zamir White took 18 carries for 92 yards. Kenny McIntosh, a freshman, took six carries and looked good as well. It will be interesting to see how they are used next year when Kendall Milton and possibly Evans come to town.

And then there was George Pickens, who was named MVP of the game. Pickens, a true freshman, hauled in 12 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown.

When interviewed, Pickens said “my offensive line is amazing. My quarterback is amazing.”

He then continued to praise his team.

“Put the camera on all these guys. I love them to death.”

Let’s talk about junior safety Richard LeCounte for a second. He receives a decent amount of unwarranted criticism on Twitter, but #2 is an absolute baller. His jersey number matched the amount of interceptions he had on Wednesday night. His NFL decision is unknown at this point, but we will have an answer on that shortly I’d assume.

As for Jake Fromm, the junior threw 30 passes, completing 20 of them for 250 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. When asked about what his future holds after the game, Fromm did not hint at whether or not he’s staying at Georgia. Instead, he praised God and his teammates. We will have to wait on that one.

D’Andre Swift is viewed as the No. 1 running back in this draft class by ESPN’s Todd McShay. We do not know what he’s going to do, but everyone expects Swift to turn pro. But what he did do was make the trip to New Orleans with his teammates. He was nursing a shoulder injury, but played through as much as he could.

After the game, Kirby praised the junior tailback for his dedication and for what he does off the field.

Kirby was clearly emotional about this win. Following the game, passion was pouring out of the former Bulldog as he hoisted the Sugar Bowl trophy with confetti flying.

Kirby called a great, aggressive game. He was aggressive on defense, pulled out some trickery on a flea flicker and a fake field goal.

James Coley was also on his game. He was willing to adapt, call outside run plays and get his best available players into a spot where they were able to succeed.

With the 2019 season officially over for Georgia, we look ahead to a 2020 that will see the Dawgs open with Virginia in Atlanta.

In week three, UGA travels to Tuscaloosa in what will surely be the game of the season at that point.

And Auburn, which complained about its schedule enough that the SEC finally did something, will be coming to Athens in early October rather than November.

Georgia vs Florida will be played on Halloween night in Jacksonville.

The South Carolina and Tennessee games will both be played in November, which will be an odd change of pace. Those games are typically in the first half of the year.

I predict 11-1, with the only loss coming to Alabama.

Dawgs vs Bama in the SEC Championship.

We’ll see….

Georgia Bulldogs football: ten best games of the decade

We take a look back at Georgia’s top ten games of the decade. The Bulldogs football team played in some classic games in the 2010s

Picking the ten best Georgia games of the decade is no easy task. The Bulldogs had many triumphs and their fair share of heart-breakers this decade. Georgia fans know the ups and downs of college football perhaps better than any other fan base.

The Bulldogs went 99-36 over this decade. The decade is split between the Mark Richt and Kirby Smart era. Smart went 43-12, while Richt went 56-24. The 2010s started with UGA’s first losing season since 1996: the ugly 6-7 2010 season. It’s been much better since then. Now, the team enters every season with college football playoff expectations.

I will only say it once: these are the best Georgia games of the decade, NOT the best Georgia wins. Unfortunately, Georgia has been on the losing side of some of these incredible games. They’ve won some barn-burners as well. Here we go:

10. September 28th, 2013: Georgia 44, LSU 41

The ninth-ranked Bulldogs knocked off the sixth-ranked LSU Tigers in Athens. The shoot out featured: Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall, Aaron Murray, Chris Conley, Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and Jeremy Hill.

Aaron Murray led Georgia on a clutch drive with the Dawgs trailing and completed a touchdown to Justin Scott-Wesley with under two-minutes to play. Georgia’s defense stepped up and shut down LSU on their final drive of the game, including a clutch Leonard Floyd sack.

9. September 10th, 2011: South Carolina 45, Georgia 42

Jadeveon Clowney and the 12th-ranked Gamecocks knocked off the unranked Bulldogs 45-42 in Athens. The game featured a back and forth final quarter, where the teams combined to score 39 total points. South Carolina got the last laugh when Clowney strip sacked Aaron Murray to score a late touchdown.

Was this the peak version of South Carolina? They were quite stacked back then, when they had Clowney, Melvin Ingram, Alshon Jeffery, and Marcus Lattimore. I’d say they were better without Stephen Garcia at the helm. Connor Shaw was much more consistent than Garcia and didn’t turn the football over as much.
