Bucs land dream pick in latest 1st-round mock draft

This would be a dream scenario for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft

One of the most useful NFL mock drafts every year is the final one put out by NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, and this year’s version is the best-case scenario for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In his latest first-round projection, Jeremiah has the Bucs landing Florida State edge defender Jared Verse at the No. 26 overall pick.

Here’s what Jeremiah had to say about the selection:

I could see a team like Tampa Bay making a trade to go get Verse if he starts to slide. In this exercise, he’s available at No. 26 and would be one of the best value picks of the first round.

It wouldn’t be shocking at all to see the Bucs move up a few spots for Verse if he gets close to their original slot, which would make it a massive win if he manages to slide all the way to No. 26.

It’s no secret the Bucs need another impact player off the edge after parting ways with Shaq Barrett this offseason, and Verse has the complete skill set and polished technique to make an immediate impact. That’s exactly the kind of player Tampa Bay needs as they look to win a fourth straight division title.

Colts get Texas WR Xavier Worthy in Matt Miller’s final 2024 mock draft

In Matt Miller’s final mock draft, the Colts land Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy at pick 15. Here is a breakdown of that selection.

With the 2024 NFL Draft almost here, we will be reviewing and breaking down the first-round predictions for the Indianapolis Colts in final 2024 mock drafts from a few of the most prominent analysts in the business:

Mock draft: Matt Miller – ESPN

Pick at 15th overall: Xavier Worthy, WR, Texas

What Miller had to say: “Here’s one where I’m going all-in on intel. The Colts have been linked to Worthy in numerous phone calls and texts over the past week, enough so that I’m buying it. The Colts do need speed at receiver, and Worthy has record-setting 4.21 wheels. Putting him in the mix with Michael Pittman Jr. and last year’s second-rounder Josh Downs makes for a sweet trio of pass-catchers around Anthony Richardson. Imagine Worthy matched with Richardson’s arm on vertical routes in Indy?”

Colts Wire’s breakdown: “Worthy’s 4.21 speed would certainly add that juice to the offense that Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen are looking for. Worthy’s vertical speed would add a new downfield presence, not to mention Steichen’s ability as a play designer and caller to get the ball in Worthy’s hands quickly and in space where he would have YAC opportunities. Having Worthy on the field could also cause some chaos pre-snap as a motion man.

Positional need: With Michael Pittman and Josh Downs, the Colts have a very solid foundation at receiver. But as we all know, they are on the search for more playmaking. Last season, both Pittman and Downs averaged fewer than 12.0 yards per catch. In Steichen’s offense, having a vertical presence is an important element, and Alec Pierce has been inconsistent up to this point in his career. Overall, this is a position group that could benefit from more depth, with some questions on the roster behind Pittman and Pierce.

Player Info

Height: 5-11
Weight: 165
Age: 20
40-yard dash: 4.21
Vertical leap: 41″
Broad jump: 10-11
Three-cone: N/A
Short shuttle: N/A
Bench press: N/A
RAS: 9.39
Pre-draft visit: Yes
Senior Bowl: No

Consensus big board ranking: 32nd

Draft Profile from Lance Zierlein: “Worthy’s draft slotting could come down to draft-room debates weighing his elite speed versus his thin frame. Worthy will find separation if allowed to explore vertically or across the hashes against man coverage, but he lacks play strength and release quickness to defeat a quality NFL press. His quick-strike potential adds an element of danger over the top and should open wider windows for teammates to work into. He lacks the physical tools to catch when contested and needs to prove he can hold up to a more physical brand of football. Worthy is a niche prospect for teams looking to add a legit field-stretcher, but areas of concern could create a wider gap between ceiling and floor.”

The Athletic beat writers predict the NFL draft; where did Graham Barton go?

The Athletic’s NFL beat reporters put together a mock NFL draft on Wednesday, and a NFC wild card team ended up with former Duke lineman Graham Barton.

The Athletic put together a mock NFL draft on Wednesday with each beat reporter making the picks for the respective teams they cover.

In the projection, Green Bay Packers reporter Matt Schneidman had the NFL wild-card team take former Duke offensive lineman Graham Barton with the 25th overall pick.

After the emergence of quarterback Jordan Love, Schneidman thinks the top priority should be his protection. Barton, who played both tackle and center in college, could fit wherever Green Bay needs.

“At the very worst, Barton can provide much-needed depth on the interior,” Schneidman wrote.

Barton’s most frequent suitors in mock drafts, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphins, both picked offensive tackles instead of the projected guard.

2024 NFL mock draft: Four QBs go at the top, OT run shakes up first round

The 2024 NFL draft starts tomorrow and there feels like there is more up in the air than normal in this class. It’s not that no one knows mostly which players should go in the first round, but there a lot of ways the board can fall.

A lot of it is riding on how the quarterback dominoes and how the offensive tackle class end up falling. There are a lot of tackles and wide receivers, and people have them rated completely differently.

Here is our final full first round mock draft, featuring some surprising trade action:

There’s not much to say about Williams at this point that hasn’t been said before. This pick has been suspected for a while and has been pretty much confirmed ever since the Bears traded away Justin Fields.

This is where things start to get interesting and competitive. Here, we have the Commanders going with Maye because of his arm talent. He has the makings of a classic franchise quarterback.

The Patriots end up with the more exciting player in Daniels. The Heisman winner made himself a lot of money at LSU this season as he wasn’t a first-round player entering the year. He is a dynamic runner and has a lot of potential as a thrower. The arm strength is there, the doubters will point to processing and consistent accuracy.

TRADE

Arizona Cardinals receive: 2024 Round 1, Picks 11 and 23

Minnesota Vikings receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 4

This is the type of pick that can scare a fan base. He probably has the tools to succeed at the next level, but never really got to show it in college. The Vikings desperately need another quarterback though, so they cash in on their two first rounders and hope that it works out.

Harrison is one of the best and safest wide receiver prospects that we have seen in a long time. The Chargers luck out that the Cardinals decided to trade out in this mock and end up with a franchise guy for Justin Herbert.

We considered having the Giants trade up for a quarterback earlier, but instead they sit still and give Daniel Jones a weapon. Nabers dominated at LSU in a stacked offense, becoming the career receiving yards leader at a school with plenty of legacy at the position.

Alt is your prototypical franchise left tackle. He’s young and has a great size/athleticism combination. He’s the type of player that you draft and then don’t have to worry about for a long time.

Turner is the most exciting, and first selected, defender in this draft. Some believe him to be better than his former teammate and reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Will Anderson. He’s ultra fast and was incredibly productive in college.

TRADE

Chicago Bears receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 15 and 2024 Round 3, Pick 82

Indianapolis Colts receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 9

Odunze would be very intriguing for the Bears here, but instead they pick up another Day 2 selection in this draft and move down a couple of spots.

The Colts grab another piece for their offense and build out a wide receiver room that now holds two talented big-bodied players in Odunze and Michael Pittman.

Fuaga is the best right tackle prospect in this draft class. He’s a bit of a jack of all trades at tackle, good at pretty much everything you would ask for. He’s a mauler but also has brains and athleticism.

The Jets did sign some veteran tackles this offseason, but the Oregon State product ensures the position is taken care of for a long time.

Mitchell is the Dallas Turner of cornerbacks. He checks pretty much every box, especially after dominating the competition at the Senior Bowl.

Latu isn’t the popular pick to be the second edge defender taken in the draft, but he does scream Broncos. He has some medical questions, but has been healthy and ultra-productive for the last two years of his college career. He is pro-ready.

While Alt is the most sure-fire guy at tackle in this class, Fashanu might have the highest ceilings. He is ultra athletic and young, but can also step in on Day 1 to protect their quarterback. Another team finds their franchise tackle.

TRADE

New Orleans Saints receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 18 and 2024 Round 3, Pick 80

Cincinnati Bengals receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 14 and 2024 Round 5, Pick 175

The Bengals trade up to add more fire power to their offense and the Saints trade down to pick up a much-needed second Day 2 draft pick.

Browers is as much of a lock of a prospect that there can be, but tight end isn’t as valuable as other positions so he dropped a bit. In the right scheme, though, he can be very much worth trading up for.

Newton is an exciting pass rusher from the interior. A lot of people have the Bears doubling up on top offensive weapons, but here they secure one of the best players in the trenches to bolster their defense.

The Seahawks grab Verse and lock up one of their defensive end spots for years to come. He is as ready to compete in the NFL as you could ask for from a defender.

There is some disagreement on whether DeJean should play at cornerback or safety at the next level. The good news for the Jaguars is that they could use him at either position and just give him the best chance to succeed with his skill set.

The Saints are able to pick up another draft pick and still snag one of the draft’s top offensive tackles. He’s enough of an athlete to succeed wherever the Saints need him. That type of positional versatility is key when your line is in as bad of shape as the Saints’ is.

Murphy has an elite speed/strength combination that would make any defensive coordinator salivate. He is more of a run-first guy than Newton is, but should still have no issue getting to the quarterback.

Mims’ NFL career could end up going any number of ways. He has some medical red flags and is super raw, but if he pans out he will be a dominant offensive tackle for a long time.

TRADE

Miami Dolphins receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 24 and 2024 Round 5, Pick 174

Dallas Cowboys receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 21 and 2024 Round 6, Pick 198

Cowboys trade up for a great athlete to pair with Trevon Diggs. He also has some slot versatility that will let him roam around the defense and cover different types of receivers with success.

Wiggins showed off his elite speed at the NFL combine with his 4.28 40-yard dash. That alone might be good enough for him to go in the first round for some teams, but he also has the other tools to secure his spot. The Eagles lucked out with him falling this far.

The Cardinals bolstered their defense earlier and now the trade down allows them to go after the best interior offensive lineman available in the draft. He likely grades out best as a center, but does have some guard flexibility.

Barton could end up at any number of spots at the next level, which is perfect for a Dolphins team that doesn’t have a lot of lineman that they would characterize as franchise players. He’ll give them the chance to put him wherever they need him the most.

TRADE

Green Bay Packers receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 28 and 2024 Round 4, Pick 133

Buffalo Bills receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 25 and 2024 Round 5, Pick 169

The Bills take advantage of one of the drafts biggest slippers in this mock. Thomas has a great size and speed combo that led to him leading the country in touchdown catches. After trading away Stefon Diggs, Buffalo needs another top guy.

While he isn’t the best athlete at the position in the draft, he might just be the most pro-ready. He’s been starting in the SEC for three years, which is not something that Nick Saban took lightly during his time at Alabama.

Now the Cardinals, with their third selection in the first round, grab an exciting receiver. They were able to pick up an extra first round selection and still get someone that people believe could become a great WR1, albeit not to the same level as Harrison.

Latham is another one of these super young, super athletic offensive tackles but he is a little bit less ready for the next level than the other guys. The Packers could have him learn a little bit and cut down on the penalties. He’s pretty much everything you would want out of the mold of an offensive tackle, though.

Here is the first big shock of the first round. The Lions take the ultra-athlete edge rusher out of Penn State. Robinson wasn’t very productive in college, but it’s hard not to get excited about a 6’3, 254-pound guy that can run a 4.48.

Paul is another guy that could sneak into the first round based on how intriguing he is. He’s a mountain of a tackle at 6-foot-7, 331-pounds but does not sacrifice athleticism. It’s a bit of a swing as a lot of people like some of the more higher-floor guys left on the board, but it’s a swing that Baltimore can afford to take.

Speaking of the other offensive tackles, Guyton goes to San Francisco. He’s another very raw player that checks all of the physical boxes. He has only been playing the position since college, so the 49ers will have to give him some time to solidify.

It’s not the wide receiver that is expected to go here by many, but Franklin is a very intriguing guy that could easily slip into the first round. He’s tall, fast and runs very well.

The latest 2024 NFL mock draft from NFL.com has the Patriots taking J.J. McCarthy and Drake Maye dropping

Could this really happen?

Given all the speculation about where Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy is going, this is one spot that might surprise some people.

In our latest 2024 NFL mock draft from Christian D’Andrea, he’s got the New England Patriots trading down with the Minnesota Vikings, who take QB Drake Maye. McCarthy ends up at No. 5 with the Denver Broncos in that situation.

But in the latest mock from NFL.com’s Charles Davis, he’s got the Pats sticking at No. 3 and taking McCarthy, which means Maye drops out of the top 10 and gets to the Vikings at No. 11. Here’s what Davis had to say about it:

SURPRISE! I was convinced for a while that New England would be the future home of Drake Maye, but now I’m questioning that line of thinking. In this projection, after the Pats entertain a bunch of trade offers, they ultimately choose to “run history back” in a sense, selecting another Michigan man to lead them … albeit 196 draft slots higher than where they took Tom Brady nearly a quarter-century ago.

Fascinating! Check out our latest 2024 NFL mock draft from Christian D’Andrea, along with his big board with the best fits for prospects.

PFF strikes out in latest 7-round mock draft for Bucs

This seven-round mock draft from Pro Football Focus is a massive whiff for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

We’re coming to the end of the 2024 NFL mock draft season, but the folks over at Pro Football Focus have given us one more seven-round projection to digest and dissect before the real thing goes down this week in Detroit.

This projection is a massive whiff for the Bucs across just about every pick, failing to hit on some of their biggest needs, and struggling to maximize value across the board.

In the first round, this mock has the Bucs spending the No. 26 overall pick on Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry, passing on Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson and Penn State edge defender Chop Robinson.

On Day 2, the Bucs spend their second-rounder on Texas tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders, addressing a position they don’t need to upgrade at the expense of multiple glaring needs elsewhere. Michigan linebacker Junior Colson went with the very next pick, and would have been a perfect fit. Kansas State guard Cooper Beebe, UConn guard Christian Haynes, and Rutgers cornerback Max Melton were also on the board, and would have been much better selections.

In the third round, Tampa Bay finally addresses their need for an edge rusher, but reaches for Clemson’s Xavier Thomas. Two offensive lineman were picked right afterward (Kansas’ Dominick Puni, Georgia’s Sedrick Van Pran-Granger), either of which would have been a better value and filled a huge need. They make another luxury pick with their additional third-rounder, taking Michigan running back Blake Corum, spending another premium selection on a backup role player instead of a potential starter.

LSU defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo was a solid value in the fourth round, as was Washington State edge defender Brennan Jackson at the end of the sixth round. South Dakota cornerback Myles Harden is an intriguing seventh-rounder.

The Bucs need multiple upgrades in the starting lineup along the offensive line (center, left guard), so to see them go all seven rounds without picking a single offensive lineman was mind-boggling. Spending two of their four top-100 picks on a tight end and a running back while ignoring more important positions with bigger needs was equally disappointing.

This 1st-round pick would make Bucs fans rage

If the first round of the 2024 NFL draft played out like this, Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans would be livid

At this point, Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans are used to seeing Penn State edge defender Chop Robinson slotted to them at the No. 26 pick in just about every 2024 NFL mock draft.

What they’re not used to seeing is the Bucs being projected to pick Robinson over Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse, Duke offensive lineman Graham Barton, and Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson.

But that’s what happens in the latest first-round projection from NFL.com’s Eric Edholm, who gave the following explanation for his selection:

There’s some buzz that Robinson could go off the board sooner than this. As for the Bucs, they don’t appear to be married to one position, but this pick would check off boxes in terms of both value and need. Adding one more athletic rusher to the mix might really make this pass-rush unit sing in time.

Yes, Robinson has rare explosiveness and athleticism for the position, which does give him tons of upside. But he’s still very much a work in progress, and the Bucs are a contending team that need instant-impact players more than developmental projects, especially in the first round.

Verse would be a much stronger fit for what Tampa Bay needs in an every-down edge defender, and either Barton or Powers-Johnson would give them an immediate upgrade at either left guard or center, both of which they desperately need.

Under the right circumstances, Bucs fans would probably be fine with Robinson being the pick. In this particular scenario, it would be a massive disappointment.

Bucs steal top edge rusher in latest mock draft

Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans would be thrilled if this 2024 NFL mock draft scenario plays out on Thursday night

At this point, we’ve all seen the usual suspects connected with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in just about every mock draft, but the latest first-round projection from CBS Sports has a name that Bucs fans have only dared to dream about.

In this 2024 NFL mock draft, the Bucs steal Florida State edge defender Jared Verse at the No. 26 overall pick, landing one of this year’s top prospects at the position, and filling their biggest need on defense.

Here’s with CBS Sports’ R.J. White had to say about the pick:

Verse is not expected to be available this deep in the draft, although the betting market has been trending toward him falling further than expected, possibly due to him not having ideal traits for the position. That would benefit the Bucs and help them fill their biggest need while not having to reach for a Chop Robinson type.

While Robinson’s athleticism and upside might be enticing, Verse is a much more complete player, with the polish to make an instant impact for a Tampa Bay team looking to win a fourth straight NFC South title. They’d much prefer to land an instant-impact defender like Verse in the first round instead of a more developmental prospect like Robinson.

Duke offensive lineman Graham Barton was already off the board, and while Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson might have warranted consideration, Verse would just be too good to pass up in that scenario.
