Next up for Ohio State at quarterback, Part 1: Kyle McCord

Let’s examine McCord

In a three-part series, I am examining the strengths and weakness of both [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] and [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] now that [autotag]C.J. Stroud[/autotag] is officially off to the NFL. While there isn’t much data on either, there is enough to handicap the race while highlighting what each does well.

Parts 1 and 2 focus on the individuals. The final part consists of my takeaways and assessment of who has the advantage heading into spring ball. The expectation is this duel will go well into fall and potentially all the way to Week 1. [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] has a huge choice to make.

Let’s get this started with a closer look at what Kyle McCord brings to the table. This breakdown follows watching highlights from his final year in high school (COVID-19 shortened season) and his play in 2021, the 2022 spring game and this past season.

Report: Ohio State to get commitment from transfer portal quarterback

The Buckeyes add some quarterback depth #GoBucks

The [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] Buckeyes have added to their quarterback room over the past 36 hours. Obviously, we all know who they lost. C.J. Stroud declared for the NFL draft on Monday morning.

[autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] found a veteran presence to replace Stroud’s seat in the quarterback room, [autotag]Oregon State[/autotag] transfer [autotag]Tristan Gebbia[/autotag]. It’s clearly not a splash move for the program. The former Beaver has thrown for 1,250 yards in three seasons. Gebbia accounted for five touchdowns through the air while throwing four interceptions.

He’s an average runner, with less than 50 yards and three scores in his career on the ground. It seems he will be more of a mentor to [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] and [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag], who are viewed as the real contenders for the vacant starting spot. You also can never have too much depth at the position.

[autotag]Austin Ward[/autotag] was the first to report the news, while Gebbia’s Twitter account has been silent. We are awaiting word from the quarterback, but multiple reputable outlets have confirmed the addition.

Way-too-early Ohio State football 2023 offensive depth chart

Here’s our first stab at what the offensive two-deep depth chart might look like for the Ohio State football team in 2023. #GoBucks

Now that we’ve heard from all of the Ohio State football players that were eligible to declare for the 2023 NFL draft, and have had some action within the transfer portal, we can begin to look at the construction of next year’s Buckeye squad two-deep. There’s still a ton of talent returning on both sides of the ball, but the offensive line will need to be rebuilt and a clear starter at quarterback will need to emerge.

Each year, we take a look ahead in the offseason, doing our best to project what two-deep depth might be, and it’s that time of the year to try to peer into the crystal ball for the first time this year. There will be several more attempts.

Some positions are pretty well known, but with the way rosters can turn over in college football, others will go through some pretty intense competition to reshape things.

We’ll split this up into two efforts, with the offense coming first, followed by the defensive side of the ball shortly thereafter.

Per ESPN: Coaches claim ‘Ohio State has lost its grip on Big Ten.’ Are they right?

Do you think they are right? #GoBucks

Over at [autotag]ESPN[/autotag], they asked coaches and reporters under the guise of anonymity to predict what will happen in 2023, and their response about [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] and the Big Ten was very telling.

They claimed Ohio State has “lost its grip” on the conference (subscription required), with two teams in the upcoming season having the ability to take the crown, Penn State and Michigan.

Yes, the Buckeyes haven’t won the conference in two years but are they really losing their grip as the Big Ten’s best? Let’s examine what the anonymous coaches said and if what they believe is actually true. We’ll start with their argument for the Nittany Lions and then what the worldwide leader believes about our rivals.

Devin Brown confirms he is staying in Columbus

Devin Brown confirms he is staying at Ohio State #GoBucks

If you haven’t heard, it’s transfer portal season, and rumors and news are flying. It’s not just about players coming into Columbus, but also players leaving for an array of reasons, including better NIL opportunities and more playing time.

One current Ohio State Buckeye who has been the focal point of the majority of these rumors is freshman quarterback Devin Brown. The former four-star recruit in the class of 2022 had to expect to be patient with C.J. Stroud on campus and Kyle McCord on the roster, but people always assume the worst and a portion of the fan base assumed he would leave for more immediate playing opportunities.

Brown made a statement on Tuesday by tweeting a clip from the film classic, “Rounders”. The memorable scene of Matt Damon’s character saying, “I’m not going anywhere” is an obvious nod to his decision to remain in Columbus.

Many expect Kyle McCord to take over the starting gig in 2023, but don’t be surprised if Devin Brown has every chance to be the guy as well.

Dad of Ohio State QB Devin Brown has jokes … at son’s expense

Devin Brown’s father knows how to keep it light and keep his son from getting a big head.

Devin Brown came to Ohio State as a highly rated quarterback. The No. 6 ranked QB overall in the 2022 class to be exact. But Brown’s dad certainly knows how to keep his talented son humble.

The four-star prospect seems to have a sense of humor as he showed when he recreated a picture of John Elway in some very short shorts. And dad has been known to make some jokes at his son’s expense as well.

Now, dear ol’ dad has gifted us with another post on his personal Twitter account showing junior’s “gains” in the weight room courtesy of strength coach, Mickey Marotti. Check out the good-natured jab below.

There is no doubt, Coach Mick is one of the best in the business at getting his guys in peak condition. But dad’s humorous exaggeration gave us a chuckle while at the same time acknowledging what the strength program is doing for his son.

Well done Coach Mick! And well done dad. In the high-stakes world of big-time college football where things can become overly serious, you’ve figured out a way to keep it fun at the same time. We look forward to more light-hearted fun as Buckeye nation cheers on your son.

Top ten Ohio State football recruits in the 2022 class

Top ten recruits in the 2022 class that could make an impact this season, and their scouting reports. #GoBucks

The 2022 college football season is coming up and even though most of the focus is on the returning studs like C.J. Stroud, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Paris Johnson Jr. — and rightfully so — it is still always fun diving into the possible future of the program.

Ohio State snagged a consensus top-five recruiting class and added a number of studs, and despite the defense playing less than ideal ball last season, they still snagged a number of playmakers on that side of the ball too. We here at Buckeyes Wire have been working all summer on some of the top recruits in this class and the following are the top five and a link to their scouting report.

Enjoy looking through what is widely considered the top ten commits that are incoming freshmen and the skinny on each for the 2022 season.

LOOK. Ohio State freshman quarterback Devin Brown gives nod to John Elway in photo recreation.

Do you own a pair of these shorts?

You never know what players a rising star looked up to on his way to good ole State U. Unless, that is, those players give you an idea in interviews or other forms of revelations.

Take incoming freshman Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown for instance. He’s from out West, so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised if he looked up to one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time that did his best work out west. A guy that came out of Standford and ended up doing some pretty special things as a Denver Bronco.

We are of course talking about NFL Hall of Famer John Elway.

Brown took to his social media this past week to recreate a picture of Elway slinging the ball around in some throwback threads. Oh boy, those shorts.

Now, to be fair, Brown didn’t say anything about idolizing Elway in the photo, but you have to believe only a superfan would find this photo and go on a Lord of the Rings journey to find a pair of shorts that would make recreating such a scene attainable.

Well done Mr. Brown.

Ohio State football class of 2022 scouting report: Devin Brown

Ohio State football class of 2022 scouting report: Devin Brown #GoBucks

The recruiting cycle for 2022 is in the books and the Ohio State Buckeyes are a consensus top-five class in the country and are seen as the number one class in the Big Ten by a wide margin. It is no secret that Ohio State will be rolling with C.J. Stroud for as long as he remains in Columbus, but the future looks bright as Ohio State keeps adding highly touted gunslingers.

It should be noted for those that are not familiar, recruiting classes are not like NFL draft classes and many of these players will not see time as freshmen and will likely be redshirted. It’s also true that in the age of the transfer portal it is likely several players from this class will not be here at the end.

I wanted to at least take a dive into some of the top studs and we’ll start at the top of the recruiting class with quarterback, Devin Brown, as we have already previously dived into C.J. Hicks.

WATCH: New Ohio State QB commit Devin Brown already working out with future teammate

Good to see these two already putting work in together. #GoBucks

You can sometimes get a gauge on guys’ compete level by what they do on their own accord. Take new OSU commitment Devin Brown for instance. He was kind of a late target for the Buckeyes as a four-star gunslinger out of Utah, and he’s already getting after it, ripping off passes to receivers on his own time.

But it’s not just any receiver he’s putting work in with, but a future teammate at Ohio State, receiver Kyion Grayes, out of Chandler, Arizona. It might be too early for the hype, but many have compared the underappreciated Grayes with current OSU receiver Chris Olave.

They both were videoed working with each other to start getting some chemistry down before the two even arrive on campus. Check out the work below thanks to Brown’s Twitter account.

It’s hard to really get a grasp of how well this workout is going other without any defenders, and a highlight shared in a vacuum, but it sure is a good development to see former teammates already getting the juices going on the football field.

Here’s to hoping Brown to Grayes is something we’ll see and hear often in the future at Ohio State.
