Duke baseball is back in the top 10.

After a little bit of a bump in the road, Chris Pollard’s team desperately needed a big week on the diamond to shift the momentum. They got just that with a 3-1 week that saw them take down ACC foe UVA for the Blue Devils’ second ACC series win of the season.

The week started with the Blue Devils hammering in-state opponent Campbell 11-1 on Tuesday. The Blue Devils got back after it on Thursday when they hosted a top-25 Virginia team. Ace pitcher Jonathan Santucci dazzled, working five innings of two-hit baseball to improve his record to 5-0, and Duke won 9-4.

On Friday, UVA bounced back with a 7-3 win to even the series at one game apiece. Another Duke comeback spearheaded Saturday’s rubber match. After the Blue Devils were down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, they exploded for five runs in the seventh and pulled out a 7-4 win to take the series.

Joined by UNC and Clemson, Duke now gives the ACC three teams ranked in the top 10. Arkansas remains number one for another week, Clemson is number two, and Texas A&M rose from fourth to third.

The fourth spot belongs to Tennessee with the fifth going to Oregon State. Virginia Tech (11), Florida State (14), Virginia (15), NC State (19), and Wake Forest (21) make up the rest of the ACC teams on this week’s poll.

Duke was named the No. 9 team in the country by Baseball America and the No. 7 team by Perfect Game.

The Blue Devils will be back in action on Tuesday to take on Liberty in Lynchburg, Va., for a midweek game before returning home to host Miami for ACC play at Jack Coombs Field next weekend.

Oklahoma remains in D1Baseball’s Top 25 despite bad week on the diamond.

Last week was challenging for an Oklahoma team that had begun to find its way. The Sooners posted a 1-3 record, and the lone win was a combined no-hitter Friday night against West Virginia courtesy of juniors [autotag]Braden Davis[/autotag] and [autotag]Reid Hensley[/autotag].

Outside of that, it was a drag for Skip Johnson’s ball team. D1Baseball didn’t hold it against Oklahoma too much, though. Despite their three losses, the Sooners remained in the Top 25 at exactly No. 25 in the latest poll.

Arkansas remains the cream of the crop, coming in at No. 1. Oregon State is number two, while Clemson moved from four to three. Former Big 12 foe Texas A&M is No. 4, while Tennessee vaults from eighth to fifth.

The Big 12 only has one other representative in this week’s poll, as Kansas State has joined the mix at No. 23. TCU, previously No. 18, dropped out after a 2-2 week.

Oklahoma will have the chance to pick itself up off the mat this week as it returns to action Tuesday at home against in-state foe Oral Roberts. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be seen via SoonerVision on ESPN+. After that, the Sooners host a Thursday-Saturday series with Lamar.

Huskers fall to No. 3 Oregon State in second round of NCAA Tournament

The Nebraska women’s basketball team entered the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon, the Nebraska women’s basketball team entered the second round of the NCAA tournament. The No. 6 Huskers faced off against host No. 3 Oregon State for a chance to reach the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2013. However, this did not come to pass. Nebraska fell to the Beavers 61-51, ending its run and the season.

The Beavers took a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and kept their cushion of a lead for the remainder of the game. The middle quarters resulted in 34 total points combined, with Nebraska outscoring Oregon State 18-16. The Huskers scored 22 points in the fourth, but the Beavers scored 26.

Jaz Shelley scored 10 points, leading Nebraska in the field as its only double-digit scorer. Alexis Markowski and Annika Stewart both scored eight points in the loss. Markowski also hauled in eight rebounds to lead the team. Oregon State meanwhile finished with three players in double-digits for scoring.

Nebraska concluded the season with a final record of 23-12, the second-best record under head coach Amy Williams.

After massive sweep of No. 18 TCU, OU baseball lands in D1Baseball’s top 25 at No. 17

Oklahoma lands in D1Baseball’s Top 25 for the first time this season after sweeping No.18 TCU.

This OU baseball team has been playing some inspired baseball recently. The Sooners have now reeled off back-to-back conference sweeps to start the 2024 conference schedule.

Despite a midweek loss to their Bedlam rivals Oklahoma State, the Sooners went 4-1 last week. Their conquest of the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth raised plenty of eyebrows and was more than enough for the Sooners to go from unranked to No. 17 in the latest D1Baseball Top 25.

TCU was No. 12 in the country when the Sooners played this weekend, and now they are 18th, directly behind the Sooners. With Oklahoma’s inclusion into the mix, the Big 12 has two teams in the top 25. Texas and Texas Tech both fell out in this latest update after each team lost two games last week.

At the top, Arkansas remains the nation’s number-one team. Oregon State is behind them, followed by perennial powerhouse Vanderbilt at three—Clemson, LSU, and Florida slot in at four, five, and six. Texas A&M, Tennessee, Duke, and ECU round out the top 10.

The Sooners also were ranked 14th by Baseball America and 18th by Perfect Game USA.

After four straight wins against teams from the state of Texas, Oklahoma will look to keep it going on Tuesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park for a midweek matchup vs. No. 15 Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night. Dallas Baptist beat Oklahoma earlier this season, 11-7, when the two met in Dallas for a midweek affair.

 

Duke slides in latest D1Baseball rankings after series loss to Clemson; remains in top 10

Duke lost its first series of the year, an ACC matchup with Clemson, and slid down three spots to ninth in latest D1Baseball poll.

The Duke Blue Devils have lost a series for the first time all season. It wasn’t as if they lost a team to be ashamed of, but this is the first series loss Chris Pollard and his team will have to bounce back from.

The Clemson Tigers came to Durham for Duke’s home ACC opening weekend, and the Tigers spoiled it, taking the Saturday and Sunday games to claim the series. With that series loss, the Blue Devils have slid in the latest D1Baseball rankings. Duke remains a top-10 team, but they are now ninth after their three-spot slide.

Arkansas continues to cruise atop the rankings, while Oregon State and Vanderbilt round out the top three. The Commodores jumped six spots.

Clemson shot up six spots to fourth, now the highest-ranked ACC team in the poll. A slew of SEC teams follow with LSU and Florida at fifth and sixth, respectively, and Texas A&M and Tennessee rounding out the teams in front of Duke.

Fellow North Carolina-based team ECU officially cracked the top 10 for the first time this season.

Florida State debuted at 12, joining the ranks of ACC teams inside the top 25. The Seminoles have reeled off 18 straight wins to start the season and are the only undefeated team in the poll.

Virginia is 14th after taking a series from Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons continue to slide after their second straight series loss. They are now 16th after holding the seventh spot last week.

Virginia Tech also enters the poll after being unranked last week. They are 19th, one place ahead of UNC at 20. After a week that saw them go winless, getting swept by Georgia Tech, the NC State Wolfpack are officially out of the poll.

Duke will end its six-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Towson at Jack Coombs Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Colorado men’s basketball closes regular season on six-game winning streak

Make it six straight

If the Colorado Buffaloes (22-9, 13-7 Pac-12) had dropped any of their final six regular season games, their chances at reaching the NCAA men’s basketball tournament would’ve dropped to nearly nothing.

So, they went on a heater, going undefeated in those games. After beating the Oregon State Beavers (13-18, 5-15) on Saturday by a score of 73-57 in their regular season finale, the Buffs also set a new program record with 22 regular season wins.

Early on, the Buffs thoroughly picked apart the Beavers’ defense while hitting 17 of their 36 first-half field goals. Colorado committed only one first-half turnover and entered the intermission up 14 points.

Despite being played more evenly in the final 20 minutes, Colorado went on to a comfortable win. All of the Buffs’ starters scored at least 10 points and Eddie Lampkin Jr. led the way with a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds). KJ Simpson and J’Vonne Hadley both added 15 points each, with Simpson dishing out a team-high seven assists.

The Buffs dominated in nearly every major stat category and improved their road record to 4-7.

Now, the Buffs will enjoy a first-round bye in the Pac-12 Tournament as the No. 3 seed. They will play either the No. 6 seed or the No. 11 seed on the second day of the tournament (Thursday) at 9:30 p.m. MT on Fox Sports 1.

While a good showing in Las Vegas will help, Colorado’s chances at receiving an at-large bid for March Madness are looking strong.

Colorado eliminated by Oregon State in Pac-12 quarterfinals

Oregon State had Colorado’s number once again

The Colorado Buffaloes had plenty of chances to win their Pac-12 women’s basketball tournament quarterfinal matchup, but the Oregon State Beavers pulled away in a double-overtime thriller, 85-79.

Colorado never trailed in the first half and led the Beavers 25-22 entering the break. OSU scored the first four points of the third quarter to take its first lead, but CU outscored the Beavers by 10 points in the third to enter the fourth quarter up 45-36.

A Frida Formann 3 in the fourth quarter gave Colorado its biggest lead of the game at 12, but OSU responded with a 13-3 run to tie the game and send it to the first overtime tied at 53.

Both teams traded blows in the first overtime, with Jaylyn Sherrod playing the hero by hitting a clutch layup for Colorado with 10 seconds left. Colorado was dealt a blow midway through the second overtime period when Aaronette Vonleh was called for her fifth foul on a questionable call. From there, the Beavers outscored CU 19-12 to take the first double-OT game in Pac-12 women’s basketball tournament history.

Colorado will now wait and see where it will be seeded for the NCAA Tournament. ESPN is set to reveal the women’s bracket on March 17.

The Ducks and Beavers have played each other on the basketball floor 376 times and Wednesday night marked a milestone.

Oregon and OSU played for the final time as members of the same conference unless the two teams meet in Vegas for the Pac-12 tournament. Thankfully the good guys came out on top 78-71. It was also Dana Altman’s 750th career victory.

It was a close game throughout, just like the game a couple of weeks ago in Corvallis, but this time the Ducks were able to pull away late. Kwame Evans, Jr. scored 22 points, Jermaine Couisnard scored 16 and Brennan Rigsby came out of his slump and scored 14 points off the bench.

If this was truly the last Civil War in conference play, it was the perfect way to end this chapter of the series. Here are the best photos from the seven-point Duck victory.

 

Late Colorado rally comes up short against Oregon State

Oregon State completed a regular season sweep of the Buffs

The No. 4 Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball couldn’t figure out No. 17 Oregon State again on Sunday.

The visiting Beavers led by as much as 25 and weathered a furious fourth-quarter Colorado rally to come away with a 65-59 win and a regular season sweep of the Buffs.

Oregon State couldn’t miss from 3-point land in the first half, hitting nine 3s while building a 44-24 lead. On the other end, the Beavers’ stingy defense continued to keep the Buffs quiet through three quarters. Entering the fourth quarter, the Buffs trailed 60-38.

Colorado fought back with a 21-5 fourth quarter to make OSU sweat, but it was too late.

Colorado’s offense was disrupted by one of the best defenses in the nation as the Buffs couldn’t get going until late. Two days after shooting 52.2% and handing out 32 assists against Oregon, CU could only muster 13 assists on 36.9% shooting.

Jaylyn Sherrod led the Buffs with 14 points and Aaronette Vonleh had 10.

Up next, Colorado (20-4, 10-3 Pac-12) will go on the road for three straight games against ranked opponents. First up is a Friday evening matchup at No. 20 Utah.

Colorado hosting Oregon State in search of fifth straight win

For the first time all season, No. 4 Colorado will be looking for some revenge

For the first time all season, the No. 4 Colorado women’s basketball team will be looking for revenge with No. 17 Oregon State coming to Boulder on Sunday.

The Beavers (19-3, 8-3 Pac-12) handed the Buffs (20-3, 10-2) their most recent loss on Jan. 26 in Corvallis, 68-62. Colorado made a season-low 19 field goals in that game but did convert a season-high 21 free throws.

Fortunately for the Buffs, they delivered arguably their most impressive offensive performance of the year on Friday in a 90-57 slaughtering of Oregon. Colorado had a season-high 32 assists, including a program-record 19 in the first half, and Maddie Nolan went off for 19 points.

Entering Sunday, both Oregon State and Colorado are riding four-game winning streaks.

“Oregon State’s one of the hottest teams in the country right now,” CU head coach JR Payne said in her postgame press conference on Friday. “They’re really deep, they’re big, they can score, they can defend, so we’re definitely excited for that challenge.”

Colorado will get things going against the visiting Beavers on Sunday at noon MT (Pac-12 Network).
