Ohio State football projected depth chart on defense for 2023, final call

A final call on the defensive depth chart for Ohio State less than a week away from the start of the 2023 season. #GoBucks

We do this on multiple occasions throughout the offseason, and now that we are one week away from seeing YOUR Ohio State Buckeyes on the gridiron in a real, live game, it’s time to make a final call on the football team’s two-deep depth chart. We already projected the offense, now it’s time to look at the defensive side of the ball.

While everyone might be interested in whether Kyle McCord or Devin Brown will get the starting nod under center, how well Jim Knowles and staff reshapes the defense will have just as much of an impact on how far the Buckeyes will go in 2023.

From a secondary that looks to be more talented and deep, to a front seven that should create havoc for opposing offenses, to the specialists, here’s how we believe the Ohio State depth chart will look on defense this fall.

We do this on multiple occasions throughout the offseason, and now that we are one week away from seeing YOUR Ohio State Buckeyes on the gridiron in a real, live game, it’s time to make a final call on the football team’s two-deep depth chart. We’ll first do the offense, then look at the defense on Sunday.

Everyone is, of course, extremely interested in whether Kyle McCord or Devin Brown will get the starting nod under center, but there are other positions that seem to be cementing themselves as well.

From the open spots on the offensive line, to some shuffling in the secondary, here is our final call on what the Ohio State football depth chart will look like when the Buckeyes run out of the tunnel to take on the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Post-spring Ohio State football offensive depth chart projection

We revisit what the Ohio State football offensive two-deep depth chart might look like after spring ball. #GoBucks

Spring is over — at least from a Scarlet and Gray football perspective — and we got to observe a lot of practices, drills, and of course, the spring game to get an idea of how the Ohio State football team is coming along.

We like to project the Buckeyes’ two-deep roster on both sides of the ball throughout the year and on into fall camp, and it seems like a great time to revisit. This year, we got a pretty good look through, reps, press conferences, and practice observations that all occurred at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

We’ll take a look at both sides of the ball, but first, we’ll begin with the side of the ball that provides the fireworks, the offense.

Here is the latest two-deep offensive depth chart projection from when we first took a stab at it after the heartbreaker at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Way-too-early Ohio State football 2023 offensive depth chart

Here’s our first stab at what the offensive two-deep depth chart might look like for the Ohio State football team in 2023. #GoBucks

Now that we’ve heard from all of the Ohio State football players that were eligible to declare for the 2023 NFL draft, and have had some action within the transfer portal, we can begin to look at the construction of next year’s Buckeye squad two-deep. There’s still a ton of talent returning on both sides of the ball, but the offensive line will need to be rebuilt and a clear starter at quarterback will need to emerge.

Each year, we take a look ahead in the offseason, doing our best to project what two-deep depth might be, and it’s that time of the year to try to peer into the crystal ball for the first time this year. There will be several more attempts.

Some positions are pretty well known, but with the way rosters can turn over in college football, others will go through some pretty intense competition to reshape things.

We’ll split this up into two efforts, with the offense coming first, followed by the defensive side of the ball shortly thereafter.

Final prediction for Ohio State football’s game week offensive depth chart

A final projection of Ohio State football’s depth chart on the offensive side of the ball as we gear up for the titanic clash with Notre Dame. #GoBucks

We do this exercise a few times of the year, and now it’s time for the most important effort at predicting and projecting the Ohio State football depth chart as we get ready to kick off the season.

So far, there’s been a ton of observations and interviews that give us a pretty good indication of where things stand, but there always seems to be s surprise or two. As the Buckeyes look to kick things off in a top-five matchup with Notre Dame, we get things cranking on the offensive side of the ball first.

There isn’t a slew of changes from what we last projected, but we feel even better about where things stand. Here is a look at our projected two-deep depth chart on offense for Ohio State football as we embark on game week. And don’t worry, we’ll do the same for the defensive side of the ball this week as well, so stay tuned.

Projecting the Ohio State football defensive depth chart at the beginning of fall camp

We project what the defensive depth chart will look like before fall camp solidifies even more for the Ohio State football team. #GoBucks

It’s no secret that the Ohio State football team suffered some limitations and disappointment on the defensive side of the ball last season. For a team that had the best offense in the country, a defense that didn’t get pushed around in key games would have resulted in a potential run for a national title.

It was not what Ohio State fans have become accustomed to, nor is it anything that head coach Ryan Day was happy about. In fact, Day addressed the defense with several key hires in the offseason, not the least of which was bringing former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles on board to stop the bleeding.

And so far, the reviews at practice have everyone believing that there’s a positive culture and production shift that should be night and day from what we saw last year.

Admittedly, a lot of turning things around on defense has to do with the personnel. The right guys have to be placed in the right position and that’s where we are. We are projecting what the two-deep defensive depth chart for the Ohio State football team might look like this fall. We’re going based on what we believe things are as fall camp starts and will make adjustments later based on observations later in fall camp.

Predicting the Ohio State football offensive depth chart as fall camp begins

Here’s what we see as the projected starting two-deep with the Ohio State offense this fall before position battles solidify in football fall camp. #GoBucks

We do this a few times of the year, and with fall camp already getting underway for Ohio State, it’s well worth the exercise of predicting the two-deep depth chart we’ll see when the Buckeyes kick things off against Notre Dame on September 3.

Not a whole lot has changed since the last time we went through the process of projecting what things will look like, but it’s still a good base to go from as things progress over at the Woody through the team prepping for the start of what we all hope is another special season.

We like to split this thing up into a couple of tranches, and we’ll start with the offensive side of the ball where we should see some more fireworks again, much like what we’ve witnessed over the last few seasons.

Here is a look at our projected two-deep on offense for Ohio State football this fall. And don’t worry, we’ll do the same for the defensive side of the ball this week as well.

Ohio State football projected defensive depth chart, post-spring 2022

We’re projecting what Ohio State football’s defensive depth chart might look like this fall. #GoBucks

Spring is well over at this point and we’ve already taken a look at what the offensive depth chart could look like for the Ohio State football team, and now we’re turning our attention to the defensive side of the ball.

When we first went through this exercise, we didn’t have the observations we received from reps in the spring and the game film from the spring game, but now we do. There have also been some personnel changes that have reshuffled things just a wee bit, as well as some clarity on the type of defense new coordinator Jim Knowles will run, so it’s a good time to take another look.

We go through this effort a few times a year and will do it again as fall camp arises, but for now, here’s how we think things line up in the two-deep depth chart for the Ohio State defense (including the kickers) after spring ball.

Ohio State football pre-spring depth chart for defense

Looking at the predicted and projected defensive side of the ball for the Ohio State football team as spring just gets underway.

Spring — as they say — has sprung in central Ohio, at least as far as the football program goes. Ohio State breaks the seal on its spring practice and there are a slew of storylines we’re interested to see develop. You can’t win a national championship in the spring, but you sure can get behind and make it tough to be in top form come the beginning of the season.

Here at Buckeyes Wire, we like to routinely check in on what we think the depth chart might look like for the football team, and the beginning of spring sure feels like a great time to do it. We last checked in our projection after the end of the Rose Bowl, and now that the roster is more solidified, we have a little more information to go on.

This thing will likely change more times than a politician’s stance on key issues, so hang with us as it all develops, especially at positions that are going through major overhauls and personnel changes.

Here’s a look at what we project and predict the defensive depth chart could look like as we sit here on the doorstep of spring ball for Ohio State. This comes on the heels of our projection on the offensive side of the ball.
