Five Ohio State defenders poised for a breakout 2023 season

Who makes the leap for the Buckeye defense this year? #GoBucks

After looking at which [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] offensive players are primed for a breakout, it is time to give the other side of the ball the same treatment.

There are questions on this side of the ball for the Buckeyes, but they still return major contributors like defensive end J.T. Tuimoloua, and linebackers Tommy Eichenberg and [autotag]Steele Chambers[/autotag].

Defensive coordinator [autotag]Jim Knowles[/autotag] is entering his second year at the position and there should be a jump in production from players for multiple reasons, such as experience in the system. Find out which five players I believe are going to explode on the scene in 2023.

Former Ohio State star Chimdi Chekwa impressed with multiple Buckeye defenders

Former Buckeye Chekwa saw more than a few players stick out #GoBucks

It’s pretty normal for former [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] stars to get an invite to spring practice and come back “home.” One of those players was former All-American cornerback, [autotag]Chimdi Chekwa[/autotag].

The Buckeyes held a scrimmage yesterday, and Chekwa was on hand with his family to watch the action. It’s always interesting to see who they see as standouts. It should not come as a surprise that the star defender kept a close eye on what was happening on that side of the ball.

Chekwa tweeted that Ohio State has plenty of work to do but multiple players stood out to him: cornerbacks [autotag]Davison Igbinosun[/autotag] and [autotag]Ryan Turner[/autotag] along with defensive end [autotag]Kenyatta Jackson[/autotag].

It’s great to hear that the cornerbacks stood out, especially given their struggles. Igbinosun, the transfer, is already getting rave reviews from multiple sources. Hearing Jackson is taking the next step is big, especially with Zach Harrison Jr. moving on to the next level. Turner hasn’t created much buzz, but impressing the former All-American at his position is good news.

Current Ohio State defensive ends and their 247Sports rankings

Current Ohio State defensive ends ranked by the 247Sports composite #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team has seven defensive ends on scholarship and all were relatively high recruits based on their 247Sports recruiting rating. Going through the list of edge rushers on the Buckeye roster will blow your mind at how high they were ranked recruiting-wise, which makes me think two things. One is how bright the future is and the other is wondering why the pass rush was so lackluster last season.

Despite all the negativity surrounding the defense last season as it looked even more inept against Michigan, this defensive line is filled with a ton of talent and that is especially true when looking at the edge rushers. There are obvious names like J.T. Tuimoloau who had flashes of brilliance, as evidenced against Penn State, but just like the defense as a whole, Tuimoloau needs to be more consistent. The next stud in line is Jack Sawyer who has had even fewer flashes but has been moved around from position to position and maybe will play at a different level in 2023.

Here are all of the recruiting rankings of the current Ohio State defensive ends on the roster for 2023.

Saturday Blitz names top second year Ohio State players

Who do you think will be Ohio State football’s best breakout second-year player? #GoBucks

College football is one of the most fun sports to watch and follow because you never know which young guy is going to explode onto the scene next. Ohio State football has had no shortage of immediate impact guys, such as Maurice Clarett, Ted Ginn Jr., and Andy Katzenmoyer, in its history, but we are always on the hunt for who could be next.

The folks from Saturday Blitz gave us their opinion on the top three second-year players on the Buckeye roster that could become stars, one is very obvious, but two are a bit surprising. Let’s dive in!

Ohio State freshman defensive end Kenyatta Jackson loses his black stripe

Jackson is one of three OSU players to lose his black stripe on Saturday. #GoBucks

Buckle up because we’re going to continue to see Ohio State football newcomers lose their black stripes over the next couple of weeks. As Buckeye freshmen and transfers reach a point when they have become a part of the OSU culture because of effort and the way they carry themselves, they lose their black stripe down the center of their helmets, revealing that iconic scarlet stripe down the center. All in front of teammates.

It’s a tradition former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer brought with him, and ever since then, it’s a right of passage for OSU football players before they “officially” become a part of the Buckeye brotherhood.

OSU had a trio of players receive the honor on Saturday and one of those was defensive end Kenyatta Jackson. He was gracious in his comments to his teammates in a brief ceremony.

“I just want to give a thanks to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Jackson said. “I want to give thanks to coach (Larry) Johnson, the rushmen — the strength coaches, all the coaches as a matter of fact. Go Bucks!”

Jackson came to Ohio State as a part of the 2022 recruiting class and was ranked as the No. 9 edge rusher and 98th overall prospect in the cycle according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Now that he’s had his black stripe removed, he can now work towards becoming the best version of himself he can be in the room that Larry Johnson is in charge of.

There’s a pretty good track record in that room, and Jackson could be the next to make a name for himself.

Top ten Ohio State football recruits in the 2022 class

Top ten recruits in the 2022 class that could make an impact this season, and their scouting reports. #GoBucks

The 2022 college football season is coming up and even though most of the focus is on the returning studs like C.J. Stroud, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Paris Johnson Jr. — and rightfully so — it is still always fun diving into the possible future of the program.

Ohio State snagged a consensus top-five recruiting class and added a number of studs, and despite the defense playing less than ideal ball last season, they still snagged a number of playmakers on that side of the ball too. We here at Buckeyes Wire have been working all summer on some of the top recruits in this class and the following are the top five and a link to their scouting report.

Enjoy looking through what is widely considered the top ten commits that are incoming freshmen and the skinny on each for the 2022 season.

Ohio State football class of 2022 scouting report: Kenyatta Jackson

Ohio State football class of 2022 scouting report: Kenyatta Jackson #GoBucks

The recruiting cycle for 2022 is in the books. The Ohio State Buckeyes had a consensus top-five class in the country and are considered the No. 1 class in the Big Ten by a wide margin. It is no secret Ohio State had some struggles and the defensive line was less than spectacular, but the Buckeyes added some serious juice to the defensive front during this recruiting cycle.

It should be noted for those that are not familiar, recruiting classes are not like NFL draft classes. Many of these players will not see time as freshmen and will likely be redshirted. It’s also true that in the age of the transfer portal it is likely several players from this class will not be here at the end.

I wanted to at least take a dive into some of the top studs and we’ll start at the top of the recruiting class with defensive end, Kenyatta Jackson, and we have already previously dived into C.J. Hicks and Devin Brown.

BOOM! Ohio State gets commitment from four-star defensive end, Kenyatta Jackson

Ohio State gets its first verbal commitment from a defensive lineman in the class of 2022 and it’s a big one!

It’s been a minute since we’ve had some big recruiting news. Today, we got some as four-star defensive end Kenyatta Jackson committed to Ohio State.

Jackson makes 15 commits to the Buckeye class of 2022 but is the first defensive lineman to commit in the class. The edge rusher from Hollywood, Florida is the No. 7 ranked defensive end in the nation according to 247Sports composite rankings and is a top 100 player overall.

Jackson’s recruitment came down to Ohio State and Oklahoma. Jackson said after some time of prayer and fasting with his grandmother, he felt like Ohio State was the best fit for him personally.

The Buckeyes currently have the No. 5 recruiting class in the county but hope to add more in the weeks to come as players will be making official visits this fall. Hopefully, this will add a little momentum to a class that started out white-hot but has gone quiet for a bit.
