Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed that he interviewed Iowa State OC Nate Scheelhaase before promoting Brian Johnson to the job

The Eagles promoted quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator on Tuesday, but head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed that he interviewed one potential candidate from outside the NovaCare Complex.

Sirianni has a tight relationship with Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell and told the media during his NFL Combine press conference that he had discussions with Cyclones offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.

Scheelhaase was named to 247Sports ’30Under30′ list as one of the top rising stars in the profession in 2019 and he’s played a huge role in the development of 2022 Biletnikoff Award finalist Xavier Hutchinson, a two-time consensus All-American running back Breece Hall, All-American running back David Montgomery and All-Big 12 wide receiver Deshaunte Jones.

The 2012 Illinois graduate was a four-year starter and two-time team captain for the Illini who finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in total offense (10,634 yards), a figure that ranks seventh in Big Ten history.

Eagles’ 10 biggest needs heading into the 2023 NFL offseason

We’re looking at the Philadelphia Eagles’ 10 biggest needs heading into a critical 2023 NFL offseason that’ll include free agency and the draft

The Eagles will have two first-round picks in April’s NFL Draft, 18 pending free agents, and a contract extension for quarterback Jalen Hurts, meaning the roster will look different going forward.

Some of the usual suspects or names you’ve grown to love will move on, while younger, more athletic, and dynamic replacements will join a roster looking for a return to the Super Bowl.

Howie Roseman loves to make big moves, and whether it be at cornerback,  safety, or edge rusher, Philadelphia is a team to watch this spring.

There are holes all over the roster, with plenty of needs, and we’re previewing the 10 biggest needs ahead of the new league year.

Nick Sirianni to hand over playcalling duties to Eagles next offensive coordinator

During his end-of-season press conference, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed that Philadelphia’s next offensive coordinator will continue to call the plays

The Eagles have yet to start interviewing potential offensive coordinators, but whoever does land the job will be tasked with calling the offensive plays as well.

During his end-of-season press conference, head coach Nick Sirianni said that even with Shane Steichen leaving to become head coach of the Colts, he has no plans to resume calling offensive plays next year.

Quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson is the candidate that is expected to replace Steichen as offensive coordinator, although the Eagles haven’t made it official yet.

“It does help me manage the game better in my opinion,” he said. “It, helps me interact with the players more on the sideline. And it helps me be able to discuss something with som, ebody upstairs to get on the defensive headset when the offense is up or vice versa. Yes, that will be my intent, to let the next offensive coordinator call the game.”

Sirianni ceded play-calling duties to Steichen two months into the 2021 season and Philadelphia never looked back, establishing an offensive identity while finishing the season 7-2 in their last nine meaningful games to reach the playoffs.

The Eagles are 21-5 since Sirianni relinquishplay-callinging duties and it allows the head coach to better manage the overall product.

7 coaches Shane Steichen could hire as Colts OC

Here are seven candidates Colts HC Shane Steichen could hire as offensive coordinator.

Indianapolis Colts fans can breathe. The is finally wait is over, and Shane Steichen is the new head coach for the franchise.

Now the question is, who will be his offensive coordinator? The 37-year-old coach will have to make the decision if he will want to call plays on gamedays or hand those duties off to whoever his offensive coordinator will be.

That decision could potentially impact the desire of a coach to take that job if they wish to be calling plays in that role. We should get that answer in Steichen’s opening press conference Tuesday, which could give better insight into who he may target.

But for now, let’s take a look at some potential names for the new offensive coordinator for Indianapolis:

Eagles’ Shane Steichen expected to finalize deal to become Colts next head coach

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen is expected to fly into Indianapolis and finalize a deal to become the Colts’ next head coach

The Shane Steichen era in Philadelphia appears ready to end at some point in the next few hours, as Adam Schefter is reporting that the Eagles offensive coordinator will become the next head coach of the Colts.

If the reports hold true, Steichen will lead a team that has weapons at wide receiver with Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce.

At running back, Jonathan Taylor is a top-five player, while Quenton Nelson is a top offensive lineman defensively, the Colts have talent in Kwity Paye, DeForest Buckner, and Shaquille Leonard just to name a few.

The Colts have $17.5M in cap space and hold the No. 4 overall pick in the upcoming draft, which could be former Ohio State star, C.J. Stroud.

Steichen has overseen the Eagles’ offensive explosion since taking over play-calling duties during the 2021 season and has a good reputation for a run-centric approach to the offense while helping develop Chargers star signal caller, Justin Herbert.

Steichen has been at the helm of Jalen Hurts’ MVP candidacy, Miles Sanders logging his first 1,000-yard rushing season, along with two 1,000-yard receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.
